How do you get Job?

Posted 5 years, 2 months ago (Edited 5 years, 2 months ago) by ClinicalCheeze

hey there!

this is kind of an open-ended question but here's some points you can answer, it'd be appreciated! (and what you work/have worked as if you want to share--)

(preferably) art related:

- do you work in an office or from home? If you work from home, is your employment in a different country?

- did you find the job through: referral from someone, specific site (e.g. one that looks for game artists specifically), general site (something like "job .com", twitter e.g.)

- did you get hired after an internship / mission (e.g. "show me you can do this") / other?

general:

- do you have any tips for getting work, for someone with Social Anxiety? A walk-in interview, online application or such?

- (the above or anything else mental health related)did you need to get a medical note about your condition?

- age you first started working, if you're willing to share

feel free to add anything you'd like!

i'm helping someone look for input since i don't really know about art jobs myself, so thanks in advance!!

Don't have an art job, that'd be nice, but for getting jobs in general... you just have to apply. If you can afford to be picky (AKA you don't need the income to live) then do that but if you need the money then don't be ashamed to just apply for whatever you need. Put out tons of online apps and if you have time then walk-ins to places that are hiring are great too. Once you secure a job then you can keep looking for jobs you'd prefer without the pressure of money. Having a good resume is a MUST, if you need have people look it over; for art you need a separate portfolio. I suggest having a few examples but have the BEST examples of the type of work showcasing different techniques. If it's a digital portfolio which it probably will be nowadays please make sure the website is easy to read and navigate.

If you don't think you fully qualify for a job it still doesn't hurt to apply. The worst thing that'll happen is that they won't call back.

Social anxiety is hard to work with, I have some myself but it really depends on how bad it is.. when I first start working any new job it was awful since all the new experiences are a lot to deal with but in time I grew used to it (except my job at the call center but that was just a Bad Time all around for many reasons). If your friend is able to go up and talk to people, even if they're really shy, then they should be fine after a while, though it'll take getting used to. Interviews are awful but you gotta do them; personally I always bring a folder with more copies of my resume (they should already have it by the interview but it's good to have) but its ALSO just for me to hold because having something in my hands calms me down a lot. For art I'd bring a copy of my portfolio on a flash drive or something similar. Have questions prepared for the interviewer, even if it's just "how do I follow up this interview". Unfortunately almost all places will want to do an interview so it's really unavoidable... if your friend doesn't have phone anxiety then a phone interview is an option to ask for.

Ehh I first started working when I was 17, during high school, to start building up my resume and also for some extra money during school.

hmm thats a lot so i'll shut up now, good luck to your friend~

I do have anxiety that interferes with daily functioning but after having gone to the doctor and been prescribed medication for it it's become a bit more manageable. I also tried reading books and online articles on depression and anxiety to learn ways on how I could cope. But I still have a long way to go. I didn't get a medical note, I didn't really think of it. Though my doctor did offer to give me one if I decided to go back to college.

I work from home as a freelance illustrator currently. Before that I worked some other odd jobs unrelated to art. They were mostly low paying online gigs. I also tried applying to entry level jobs around me but realized my anxiety was so bad I couldn't even make it to interviews lol. I would freeze up the day of the interview and stay in bed all day.

My clients are from all over the place. Not from any one country. I got my art gigs through...a lot of research. And cold emailing. And putting my work out there. I would recommend researching the different fields within art and decide what field you want to work within. Like editorial illust, book covers, or character design in animation or games, or environment design in animation or games etc etc etc and pick something (the more specific the better) as a focus to make a portfolio around. You're not guaranteed to get a job in that specific area, in fact you might find yourself working in a completely different field so it's fine not to sweat the picking a field part too much. Just having a focus helps guide you. Then research the portfolios of the people working in that field currently to see what a good portfolio for that field is. Try to put together a portfolio for that field. Then research who those people are working for. Send your portfolio to those places. If you don't hear back from anyone then try to see what you can improve on and try again.

I started getting steady work at 24 so lol...late bloomer here. I've always been pretty ashamed of my life trajectory and anxiety but I've learned now to accept who I am and do what I can.

thanks sm for your inputs!!

brief overview is yes, friend is planning on getting a stable job (even if it's just being grocery store staff) before they find something they'd prefer (in this case, an art job exactly or related to what they studied and just graduated for--). there is really bad anxiety involved (i get the ok to share this: it's at a point where they can respond to people but after just a short while of having to talk to people e.g. cashier they'll break down) so it helps to know they're not the only one... unfortunately being there for them (we live in different countries) isn't something i can rly do

they'll keep everyones advice in mind!
