commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 15 days ago (Edited 2 years, 1 month ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

I hate when artists don’t communicate. I once commissioned an artist who’s deadline was 1-2 weeks and I was totally fine waiting. Then two weeks turned into a month, so I reached out asking for updates and they said they had surgery. Ok, no problem shit happens, so I think nothing of it. Then, for at least a month, when I asked for updates, they claim they have sent the final to my email, discord, so I check both and nothing there. Then, they said that they were at a funeral and they’ll send it soon. Now it’s been nearly two months and they promised to send me the final product for weeks but never did. It wasn’t until I asked for a refund and filed a PayPal dispute that I got my finished product.

Now look, I understand that life gets in the way. I’m not going to accuse the artist of lying about the funeral or surgery because I’m aware that shit like this does in fact happen. However, if you promise that the deadline was 1-2 weeks and you constantly promise to send it and fail to do so? Yeah I’m going to get pissed. It’s unprofessional and a terrible way to treat your clients. I’m paying you for a service, so at least be more communicative if you need more time! ;_; I would’ve been fine waiting longer if they hadn’t kept making excuses and lying about sending the final product.

Other honorable mentions:

• when artists don’t have any links or info on commission prices, so I’m forced to message them directly. This turns me off immediately. It’s so inconvenient and I end up feeling so bad if their prices are out of my budget ;-; just please spare the awkwardness and create a carrd or something. It’s not that hard.

• when artists DM me in hopes that I’ll buy a commission from them when I never asked. I’m supposed to be the one reaching out to you. Not the other way around. I will seriously ignore the shit out of you for doing this. It’s incredibly unprofessional.

People who feel the need to be rude about not wanting to take furry comms. Like sheesh just because you don't take them doesn't give you an excuse to be a dick and cry about "furries being gross!"... just say you don't feel comfortable with furries... people will accept that and you won't look like an asshole while you're at it.

+ that's gonna make me not consider commissioning them even if I don't want furry art. I'm not forking my money to someone who's judgemental of potential clients like that

^ Reminds me of the people who are like “I’m not a furry I swear do not EVER call me a furry I just like anthro animals that’s it” like dude just say you aren’t a furry? There’s no need to be aggressive about it lmfao

Commissioners who say they can only draw one gender. Totally fine for personal work but why would somebody commission someone who can’t draw half of the population. I see this on TikTok and there’s this one video I saw of somebody getting mad about being told to draw more than girls. You can draw all the ladies (or lads) you want but commission-wise maybe don’t take those on until you can draw all genders.

^^ While I agree that a commissionable artist should be well rounded enough to draw a wide variety of things, I would rather an artist be up front about being unable to draw certain things than say they can draw something but actually cannot. I might be missing your point though, sorry if I am!

Edit because I forgot to add why I commented lol: The reason I say this is that there’s been a few times I’ve commissioned artists who say they can do what I am requesting of them as a commission, but then either never finished the commission and refunded me instead or have finished the commission and everything just didn’t look very good. Some artists have even acknowledged they can’t draw something after completing the commission, or say the result looks “bad.” While being willing to do a refund for lack of work is a very professional behavior, I will not lie it can be a bit disappointing to not receive the expected result.

People taking like 5 bucks for a full-body. While yes they're undercharging very badly, I point this out for a different reason. They personally give me anxiety.  I had it happen before that someone straight up refused to draw the commission for me because they didn't wanted to draw for only 5 bucks. ???????????????. It was literally their prices.  Dude then put them higher. Whenever I see people having very low prices I fear to commission them. They probably have way too many things on thier list as well.

when people looking for commissions call their artwork "bad" or "shitty", it doesn't make me want to commission them. don't insult what you are trying to sell! that's a terrible business practice lol.

Lemonylulu

I do not really get the "artists should be able to draw xyz before opening comms" argument. Some people just specialize in specific things. You wouldn't go to a sculptor and ask them to do an oil painting---so why lump people that draw all into one broad category? Being able to draw a cat and being able to draw a human are two entirely different skills.

It limits your audience, yeah. But if you a want a drawing of a big burly guy, why would you wanna commission someone with only doe eyed anime girls in the first place?

Skykristal

When I deliver work & I get no response.  Do you like it or not? They just take the art and leave which probably means they like it the way it is because they don't point anything out. But I really really don't like when people do that..

When artists don't reply for days when I ask for an update after I've waited a month, but they're active otherwise. Most of them do reply eventually but like? If you're active on that social, doing stuff there etc, the least you can do is answer my message inquiring after a commission that I paid you for LOL, it feels like they're avoiding me because they haven't worked on the art, and this happens surprisingly often. I don't mind that you need time, just answer please!!

PokemonTrainerAlix

Seeing an artist take upwards to a year to finish my art, then seeing them vent about life and stuff and how taking commissions is too stressful (but never offering refunds or to try to work w people) and then their fanbase being like "Oh it's just art dont worry about it!" Like. Look I get it stuff is stressful, but it isnt just art. I paid money for this. I saved and budgeted so I could afford it.

vvv Y e a h. Talk about feeling like a captive audience huh
