banned users

i feel like its necessary for banned users to be able to retrieve their ocs

one of my friends recently got banned, and my friend has lost all access to ocs that were stored on toyhou.se

i think that a mode where banned users cant do anything other then view their current ocs would be ideal. [going into further detail of what i think would be good, no interacting with others, no posting new art/ocs, all of their ocs being locked from the outside and only visible to them, i think that banned accounts would appear the same from the outside but with access to their own personal ocs when logged in]

edit: someone in the comments said that stolen ocs get deleted anyways, im not sure if this is true or how to verify it, but if it is true then there really is no issue with allowing banned users to have access to their files, its like being banned off one drive or box drop or any other shared file type thing, granted im not sure what you'd do to be banned off of the ones i listed, lol

edit2: i dont rlly agree with my comparison to other websites anymore because they're quite different, but i still very firmly believe that there should be something like what i said originally.

This isn't a black and white idea/concept, I'm not saying "Everyone who gets banned should be able to use the site even if they got banned for stealing ocs!!1!1!!", people that steal oc's shouldn't be able to access theirs because there's no way of validating their legitimacy, but acting like thats the only reason why ppl get banned is naïve and ignorant. Some people can't back up their files for various reasons, I have most of my art backed up but I can acknowledge that many people don't! and that's okay :) there needs to be more nuance allowed then "Downvote because i save all my art, so ur stupid if u don't."

i agree w this 100%

ScarletBloodmoon , my friend said something rude to another user who had been harassing & spamming my friend with a few other people

i dont think it matters what someone does tho, I believe that ppl deserve access to their own ocs regardless of what they did, with my idea they still wouldnt be able to post anything so it doesnt matter much

bittersweetness

i like the idea but honestly it's gotta be a -1. banned users are usually banned for stealing art/characters. i think still giving them access to this defeats the purpose of being banned.

i think it would just be better for the mods to implement a feature where you can send a request to download any characters that you had on your banned account. it would give the mods a chance to filter out the people who genuinely want their characters back, rather than people who want to save the files of stolen characters to re-upload them somewhere else.

or in all honestly just save any character art you have on a drive and rename the file name the name of the artist who made it. it would cause a lot less trouble if you lost your account or if you were banned. you can always just delete the art if the character doesn't belong to you anymore.

bittersweetness there are lots of reasons why someone would be banned, in my experience i havent even seen that many people get banned for stealing ocs, but yeah if someone is stealing ocs they shouldn't get access to them but thats sorta a given

implementing that feature would be nice but its not practical bc the mods already have enough on their hands

saving every single oc + every art piece takes time and honestly defeats the purpose of the site because using your own files will always be more secure

Willowfoox , the wayback machine only works if the pages have been previously catalogued, and they werent so its a no go :( but all the images would have watermarks on them anyways so it isnt the most practical

bear in mind the stolen OCs get deleted too, so +1 to this idea

Don't plan on getting banned anytime soon haha, but still a definite +1

Considering how much information a lot of people keep on here, I fully support people being able to recover that even after their account has been closed. Stolen OCs are usually deleted before an account is banned, so there's no way thieves would be able to access those anyway, hopefully the same applies to characters that break other rules as well, those should not be recoverable after a ban.

Bans can happen for a multitude of reasons. While the most common ideas of why someone would be banned is character theft, I've seen bans over missing credits and falling behind on commissions, in addition, minors can be banned for lying about their age, which yes- while wrong, a ban until they're 18 is more than enough punishment, that should not be made even worse by completely removing access to information and characters they had stored. In addition to all that, mistakes do still happen, even with just one person working on the site, I'd imagine that number will only increase once we start to get admins/mods. The ability to recover information on a repository site is key, especially considering that the forums are essentially a separate, completely optional part of the site to the character-storage side.
