New Rule Question

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago by Maii

I recently saw the rule last night, would my AU and many other UT AUs owned by others on the platform be not allowed on the site anymore?
FInaletale AU in Question I have the AU private and listed it with an access key.
I fully understand I do not own the characters in question, and more was just going to use the gallery for my AU worldbuilding information, design changes within characters (mostly being clothes and a few small things), and art of the AU.
If they are not allowed anymore, does anyone know of a website that will be able to host information and pictures made for world building??

for fanworks, you might be better off making a tumblr/sideblog and using a gallery-type theme. i know people use google docs for information & maybe sta.sh folders for character galleries, if you wanna minimize sharing & would rather just have it as a reference.

Sta.sh sort of scares me due to eclipse coming soon, but thank you for some suggestions.
I might look into Tumblr, for the AU.

I had one of my UT AU characters temp frozen before but they gave him back to me.  Toby Fox allows AUs of his characters therefore as long as you credit the original you are allowed to make AU characters from UnderTale.

The reason they froze him originally was because he was a AU that I did not originally make myself so I had to provide proof the original creator lets others also use the character.  Not because it was an UT AU character.

From my DMs

"We do permit fan characters where the creator of the original material permits derivative fan works - in this case, Toby Fox does permit fanworks, AUs, and RP of Undertale characters, so characters derived from Sans from Undertale would be permitted. However, it looks like that this character is additionally created derivative from the work of another fan"

I wouldn't suggest Tumbler due two it's resent mess-ups. DA might work though.

Also are you sure RustHeart ?

I'm really worried for my characters right now ;^^

RustHeart

You could put in a ticket to double check but I am sure my UT AU characters are safe and they probably are to

Idk- tbh I don't know if I even want to continue useing the site after this.

Any of you guys know what’s the cause for this rule in the first place and not just human artist bias?

Kolo

Sakuya

there was a community vote on whether or not to allow these sorts of characters, and the rule updated reflected the results of that vote

ShinePaw101

the vote was pretty unfair imo-

Of course it’s full of human artist....

I feel like this wasn’t handled well at all, it’s just a community choice with no actual legal reasoning behind them... it’s just “do u think Naruto dogs are valid? Discuss.” Thrown to people who aren’t familiar with those concepts yet make gjinka I see. I’m still very unsure about this all and it’s very grey. I do not think people are happy.

(I’ve done my research for my touhou furries that are protected by Creative Commons license so there’s no real problem to them in the first place.....)

sta . sh has been confimed to be closing when eclipse hits, so dont go for stash. (you'll lose anything you don't backup since, well, they'll be discontinuing it.) - there was an announcement on this back in... the end of 20018-beginning of 2019 time ut im having trouble sourcing this, but tl;dr dont just back it up on stash and call it a day. its not going to be a safe option.

charahub had a warning, but it was a pretty short one. like a couple of weeks tops, maybe. it's a big shame too, they had lots of character questions.

i think it's a good change personally, but that might be a unpop opinion. there's always the option of wikia if you want to make collections for your AU canon character(s), but it's a bit bulkier. the bright side of that is that you could invite other people to join you and you could have a wikia for all of your canon AU characters. i advise against dA now despite being a longtime member because they copyright over any art you make of them (its too legally messy to deal with imo but the tl;dr on that is that they own any art that you put up unless you copyright it and oof).

another alternative is google drive but if that doesnt work, then thats no good.

i would have suggested FB groups and stuff like that but FB is a mess & you'd have little to no privacy, so that's out.

another suggestion is banding up together in a group and funding your own website, however other than the fact the group might not be able to afford it/code it/etc, it's also very legally messy and you could end up having action taken against you if you're making any sort of monetary profit from hosting the AUs of other peoples canon characters.

so that leaves one more, slightly lower tech option -

jcink forums, except not for RPing, but for hosting all of your characters. it's not going to be as high tech, and well, you'd be working wholly on forums, but it's a start, right? you could put them there for now. jcink's staff is really good at customer support ive heard but they dont tend to interfere unless, well, somethings really against their TOS. considering caution to the wind (a popular roleplay resource site) is still up, you should be fine for that.

im not sure how you'd host your images, mind. i usually just use tumblr. but that might not be an option for all. iirc you can add them as attachments if permissions are set up correctly, but i dont know how that'd work out. thought id leave the option anyway.

While I'm not sure about if they host images or not, but dreamwidth allows a lot of differing things, and is fine with creators (art/fanfic/etc), and were very open with tumblr users moving there. You could backup all your text on that and if they don't host images, double up with imgur.
