I commissioned an artist for a price, and they increased that price very quickly after in a different post, deleting the one I originally commissioned them form because it was an emergency.
I feel like they’re going to charge me more. they may not, but I don't want to misguide them. (they haven’t even sent a sketch yet). it increased from 5$ to 10$ and I don't feel comfortable paying that price with my current budget.
I ended up saying that I can’t afford the new price but offered to donate given the current world situation. Was I in the wrong?
I think you're fine, if you don't have the money then you simply don't have the money. If the artist confirmed your order then it's on them to tell you about price increases (and honestly it'd be scummy of them to charge you more after you two agreed on something). If they didn't communicate anything with you, then I don't see why you can't cancel it. You were honest and told them before they sent you any progress, I highly doubt you're in the wrong here because it seems like an issue with the artist for not communicating better
tbh, i dont know what kind of it was, but from an artist pov i can see how $5 mightve been a grave underestimate for the amount of time they need to put into a single piece; increasing the price is understandable and fair. what would not be good tho is changing the price in the middle of a comm/charging a different price than what was initially agreed.. making it purposely vague/easy to assume what the price will be until the work is finished and the commissioner doesnt have a choice.
in any case, thats my thoughts as someone without knowledge of the whole situation (were they not going to clarify with you, or just didnt get around to discussing?) 😅 i dont think theres necessarily an asshole in this case, haha
