Difference between Flattened vs Nested folders?

I'm trying to organize some of my characters and I came across the option of choosing between a flattened folder or a nested folder. I tried searching up the difference but it just kind of confused me lol. Does anyone have any examples or explanations?

It’s how the folders look kinda. Mine is Flattened here (Parent folder + Sub folders inside), and here is one Nested. I dont have a better explanation tho.
