What are your characters for? 🤔

What are your characters for/how do you use them? I've been really curious lately to know how people use their characters and what the purpose is. It occurred to me that everyone doesn't use them the same.

Do you make visually appealing characters that you can draw?

Do you collect cool/cute designs for fun?

Do you build characters to write and is it for personal enjoyment or are you a writer?

Do you have mostly fan ocs to be more involved with you favorite fandoms or to write fanfics?

A little of everything or something entirely different?

I must know!

I make my characters mainly for roleplays - either freeform roleplay series with friends or (these days) D&D. I don't collect designs nor trade in adoptables - any designs I do end up accumulating from other people have been received as trades on character games. I mostly have no idea what to do with them myself so they just sort of sit there. :P

That said I do like making my characters visually appealing (which doesn't mean "pretty" but does mean "interesting") so that I'd enjoy drawing them more. Most of my art is roleplay illustrations as well.

I use most of my characters for roleplays. (I would use all but since I'm only RPing with other people and they don't like every concept I come up with / have issues with some character types it sadly isn'r possible.) Buuut I also enjoy worldbuilding and developing a character and sometimes write short scenes to get them out of my system. If I really like a design I might get it based on that as well, but usually I would at least have a rough idea of what to do with it.

My mains are used for role play and the rest are just OCs that I enjoy developing, drawing, or basically want to keep. Many I created back around 2002 so they're dear to me.

Most of my characters just exist for me to draw tbfh,,, I do have some planned stories with a big chunk of them, though lack of motivation or concrete direction on exactly how I want to tell those stories is killer. Some of them just exist in their own little world that'll probably never leave my head and some of them are just there to look pretty.

A little bit of everything really! The OCs I come up with myself I have I made to write and draw, and are often much more serious than my fandom OCs who I don‘t have many of and are just for fun. When I buy adopts though it’s all about visuals!

Some start out as characters in fics (or original stories), some start out in roleplays for me.
