For me, well...
Nautilus's name came from a song called... well, Nautilus. Dunno, I though it was soundind sea-like-
I choose the name of Aeris because it was soundind like Aero-stuff, aaand maybe because I've seen a video talking about Aeris of Final Fantasy. Who know.

I always look for the perfect suited names for all of my characters and use Google translate or web-sites with the meaning of foreing names and surnames
Kharis Almasairy literally means "The Soul Keeper" in Arabic and I chose it 'cause she's the Goddes of Life who controls all the living creatures on the Earth creating the Future.
A lot of my oc names are just words I made up by mashing letters together letters that sound good. Lavera's was based on the title of the song "La Primavera" by FAKE TYPE, but his character really has nothing to do with the song. "Devlite" is just a lazy derivative of "devil".
a lot of names i pick for characters are from songs i rlly like! for instance Sylvia is from Sylvia's just a dying fad by the scary jokes, Orpheus is from Orpheus under the influence by The Buttertones and Winona is from She's my Winona by FOB. All of which don't really have much connection to the lyrics but I still connect them with the songs!
Others like Bias, Darl, Hoodwink and Mam have story related meanings (Darl's was also originally a joke between friends, but it just stuck..).
There's also one's like Pots, Polo, Smitten etc which are just...cute. There's no real meaning behind them :]
I was originally going to name him "Damien", but I had a bad experience with a person named that, so I wanted to find something similar. I still wanted something that started with a D, so I was stuck between Desmond and Dominic for a long time.
I decided that Desmond was prettier/sort of pretty boy name and fit his personality better, so needless to say, his name is now Desmond and his middle name is Dominic lol. I
I named his kid (in an AU where he has a son) Damien instead.

Speculum was the first one I made and I've based the rest of the species off of her, but she is named after speculum metal, the kind of metal that is polished to create mirrors!

A lot of my characters have pretty long reasons behind their names, I think it's a lot of fun trying to fit in as many different criteria into a name especially since I have a very hard time coming up with names, it helps to narrow down the list of possible names
This got really long so my explanations are under the spoiler:
My most well developed characters (at the moment) have nicknames and real names, I got Billie and Sunny's names from a movie I watched which was a Western and two of the main characters were called Mister Sunshine and The Kid which I though would be fun to reference in their nicknames since Billie is the youngest character and Sunny is tall and charismatic like the character of the same name, Santiago got his nickname since the character he's mainly based off is called Cowboy, and I thought that name suited that theme, but it also means Saint James so I used that to pick his real name, Yorkie's got a werewolf theme going in his character design and his name was picked by his other creator it suits him since he's the one English character out of the group and Yorkie is also a breed of dog, unfortunately Leo and Marlin's names aren't as well chosen, I initially picked Leo since I like that name, it's got a zodiac theme which suits the 70s setting and it's also related to lions which are usually associated with leadership but it feels a bit too on the nose, and for Marlin's name, I wanted an animal theme and it was also viable as a regular name but I don't think it really suits him and I think the fish theme kinda kills his cool tough-guy vibe lol
For my Cyberpunk characters, Donnie was picked since it's the name of a prominent Cyberpunk character, Costello was the name of a character that his face claim played (And I think it's a cool name lol), Marcus has a much longer explanation, I wanted his initials to be M E since that's also the name of a song by a musician who inspired his character about an AI that turns evil, the song was inspired by the book "I Have No Mouth and Must Scream" and the last name of the author who wrote that book was Ellison which I picked for him, and Marcus was picked since it comes from the word Mars and the TTRPG I made him for is set on Mars (And it can also be shortened to Marc, the first name of another musician I like) and in-universe the last name of the owner of the robotics company that made Marcus is Ellis, so it would be like a robot character calling themselves Terra Skynetson which I think is a funny joke
I made him in the sims and just used /guy/ as a placeholder because I planned to come up with a proper name for him real soon but guess what 😂
(Tho as his backstory now goes this still isn't his actual name but he changed it to be deliberately unremarkable after an incident in his hometown after which he went into hiding from the law 🤔)
Pulcella's name/(my username since its a unique name) has an interesting origin.
Basically, I thought the word "Puella" from Madoka Magica's full title was cute sounding. I looked up what it meant, and found synonyms for it. Got "la pulcelle". While some meanings are a bit negative, I went with the "maiden" meaning. So, yeah. I just think the name Pulcella is cute sounding.
I've had this character for a long time (before i got toyhouse) so i actually forgot the meaning of the name/why i chose it aaaa
all i remember is that Amicius's name is very loosely based on chinese words and i think one of the words mean "safe". this makes sense as he is the type of character to want to protect and keep others safe.
but yeah thats pretty much all i remember of the reason why i gave him that name lol-
This guy (Shallows) was named after a Super Mario 64 level in Wet-Dry World, specifically “Secrets in the Shallows and Sky.”
Eclipse was named after the fact it looks like an eclipse due to being a chimera of the Sunglow and Midnight Blizzard morphs of Leopard Gecko.
Analog was named after the “analog horror” genre.
Chop Suey was named after the dish thanks to their their ears, tail, and “hair” being soy sauce. Soy sauce is a major component of the chop Suey dish.
