Charater design mini crit {closed}

Hi hi, I thought since I have experience in peer critique spaces that I could have some mini crits with the people here on Toyhouse who may have not had an opportunity to before.

Basically, just leave a character you'd like to talk about the design of below. I will be reading any profiles attached since story and design go hand in hand. And just generally tell me what you're going for with them and hopefully, I can give out some helpful advice. I'm also cool with general art questions if you have em.

Also, note I'm gonna be doing this literally how me and my classmates do it for class which is generally like "hey I like this, this I would've maybe done like this, have you seen this artist/movie/painting/ect?" So this is just a very laid back kind of critique space for anyone to be in

Clarifying that this is a DESIGN crit and not a story/writing crit, I might make a separate thread for that sometime later but for now, that is the focus of this thread

Sh_dz8 I'm not in the brain mode to do much work on story crit right now, but I think someone else has a thread going around for that so that might be helpful on that side of things.

For her design, I'm not sure what time period her story takes place in, but using the context of some other outfits and the characters In your heroes folder to assume that this is modern if not past that. But essentially I'd play around with different kinds of activewear since right now it feels somewhat simple for someone with so much money and I think you can pull out more personality from her with specific fashion choices/accessories. For instance, her bow is very "traditional" in a sense, if you wanted to look up compound bows that might be fun. You can even play around with her hair more, a more pulled-back look might be good for her active lifestyle. And lastly, I think her color palate could be de-saturated, I know working with traditional media can be limiting at times but you can get a good range of color even with a cheap pack of colored pencils. On that note even playing around with a new palate entirely could be interesting, what's throwing it off right now is that the colors used don't belong to any of the same groups, the yellow is pure yellow, the brown is in the red family and the purple is more blue-leaning. So try to look into some color theory in general and I'll help fix that.

They certainly look like a creepypasta OC. I don't have many notes since that seems to be the goal of the character, I'd try moving away from the hoodie troupe but if that's what you wanna go with, go with it. It's limiting but also for someone who's crafty, I think you could go more all out with different patterns and textures and materials and all that, make it look like a craft store threw up on em ya know. Something like that would really make them stand out.

Well, this is the first time someone has shown me a charter that they did not originally design. Again I'm not here to critique stories, just design. I don't think she aligns with the Sukeban look, she looks like just a race car driver. Take the time to research the history of Sukeban girls more closely not only to get a feel for the style but to better understand the material you're handling.  Yes, generally speaking, it is just a term for a girl gang but the history is distinctly tied to the 70-80s and was essentially a feminist movement.  If you're using the modern romanticized version of them, that's fine, but knowing the histories behind things is important.

Sonas are something I see as rather personal things that I personally wouldn't crit too heavily since they are expressions/extensions of the artist. So any design choices I really do feel are up to you. I can see he has a story and is more than a casual sona, and I like the story point about the eyes, that's pretty sick. Personally, I think the drawings where there isn't a disconnect from the neck look the best, the flow of it just feels nicer without that hard cut and the exposed bone.

While I'm not entirely familiar with her game/species, but I do recognize what she is/is from vaguely and I think she fits in with it aesthetically from what I know. I don't have many notes, her colors look good, and don't have anything that sticks out that I'd change past the general "ay this dude is fighting a lot don't have that mid-drift open to attack" haha
