Dorky References In Character Design

Posted 6 years, 10 months ago (Edited 5 years, 2 months ago) by Lonestarcelt

Is there anything more fun than creating new characters? Probably not...but there are certainly things that we enjoy outside of that creative process. From movies we love to watch, songs we listen to on repeat, books we can go back to over and over, and games we could play for hours if not days on end, and as a result. Sometimes, intentionally or not. We inject a bit of our other loves into the creative process. This thread is for that very purpose. Was your character's name a reference to someone from your favorite book? Was their fashion sense lifted from a show you watched? Did you get their hairstyle from an anime you saw ages ago or did some aspect of their past come about from listening to that song that you just love? Why not post the connections here? All references from big to small. From details that may seem super obvious to you to the minor minutia that someone only as in-depth in whatever lore as you would even start to recognize? It doesn't matter. If you have something that helped influence your character why not share it here and let everyone know, not only something that went into your creative process, but also maybe introduce people to something new.

Examples:
Your character's pet is named after something from a video game
Your character wears a bit of jewelry taken from some part of a short story
Your character has a phone charm of some video game faction

Please note: This is just a thread for references. Sure these references could inform large parts of a character's design or world but there's a difference between that and say a fan character for whatever bit of media they were made for. Nothing against fan characters it is just not the goal of this thread. However, if you have a fan character who has a reference to some other bit of media? Say a wizard for the Harry Potter universe who loves a particular band from the 90s enough to have some merch on them to a Homestuck fantroll with some obscure video game reference? They are more than welcome here. In essence.

X: A fan character on their own
✔: A fan character with a reference in their design to some outside media.

Cord is a based on the moirai

SuperStar2361

OH BOY

  • astra's full name is astra phoenix... her real last name from before she was turned into a cyborg was wright. need i say more?
  • mari's full name is marisa margatroid - she got this name from marisa kirisame and alice margatroid from touhou!
  • makoto got his first name from makoto naegi from danganronpa, and tbh speaks almost entirely in references to video games.
  • raven here has an outfit based on the 'fun is infinite' screen from sonic cd! she just loves creepy things, and i could not unimagine her wearing something like that ahaha
  • the whole idea of rudy's hair being half black and half white was inspired by monokuma from danganronpa... lmao
  • kenzi's last name is marshal, which i got from marshal from animal crossing. they also have the same birthday as him!
  • i have a whole bunch of characters who aren't on here yet whose names are references to video games. among them are bianca hill (who gets her name from the first level of super mario sunshine, bianco hills), celes(tia) gainsborough (celestia ludenburg from danganronpa, aerith/aeris from final fantasy vii), and sora hakurei (sora from kingdom hearts, reimu hakurei from touhou).
  • i also made a new character recently who has long, green hair and red eyes (...well, actually one, since the other's grey). i totally didn't get that idea from dark prince from puyo puyo i swear

there's probably more, but that's all i can think of at the moment

Render is based on rendering

Fork is based on a computer bug and a fork bomb

Moze is based on Twitter, firefox and swift

Sierra is based on os x mountain lion and os sierra

Computer terms... I got more if ya want.

Also Death pole is a reference to Harley Quinn

Blackwood made his clothing referencing Robin

chiliechii_inactive

I gave Belle here the name because at that time the live action Beauty and the Beast movie was out and I had recently watched it.
Her mom, Lilith, is loosely inspired by Ragyo Kiryuin from Kill la Kill. The whole aura she gives off, the fact that she's the head of a fashion company, and even her theme song is what I gave Lilith!

Maya's personality is based on April Ludgate from Parks & Rec, haha.

Max Carter tobitaka

Max often has a sweater that. References heavily to Don't Hug Me I'm Scared's Sketchbook and overall lesson/episode. (There's a reason behind this but. It's be easier to admit after I finish finalizing their stuff)

Anthony Metronome is a full on reference to dont hug me I'm scared 2, for similar reasons

Yukki unused-account

Yukki's name is a reference to, you guessed it, Mirai Nikki. Which I haven't seen. But oh well.

 Freyja chiliechii_inactive

Freyja was inspired by a bunch of animated buff/muscular/strong woman I have a crush on know, ajfhdss. Her love for working out and keeping her physical strength on check is mainly inspired by Effie from FE14. Other inspirations are Pantha from Teen Titans, Tsuchiya from Mob Psycho 100, and Urbosa from Breath of the Wild. Although Urbosa is more body type wise because I unfortunately don't have the game so I know nothing about her :')

LiminalsSpace

A lotta my OCs are music-inspired! Ritz specifically is basically all based on this video for the song 'Puttin' on the Ritz' by Taco. You can see the obvious similarities between Ritz and the main guy in the video lol i didnt really try and hide it ;w;

Ranohara

My homestuck troll Tsevii has multiple references from LOZ in her character / design. Dynasty was basically founded around the idea of 'wow, I really like the game Okami. I wonder if what would happen if I made a god character like Ammy?" Atiya is based around the concept of a dragon protecting a princess from unwanted suitors in medieval times, except instead of the princess hating the dragon, they're best friends instead.' And then things got really gay. Whoops.

Bonus: These aren't references so much as namesakes, but Soul got their name from Soul Eater, Amalthea got hers from the Last Unicorn, Chun got hers from a character in Okami, & Banshee got his from an aircraft vehicle in Halo 2 (the name sounded cool and I was 12 fight me).

 Caisin Cosmind

The donuts on Caisin's shirt are a reference to Portal, it doesnt exactly stop there since the sole of his shoes as well as his suit (in combinason of his ability) is still in reference to that

it's kinda obvious to be honest, it just started as a simble shirt design reference, then the whole OC sorta ended up being heavily based around that simple nod

Jetra Lonk

The colors of Jetra's outfit are in reference to the orange and white fighter pilot costumes in Star Wars! Get it? Cuz she's a pilot class from a species that lives on another planet? Eyyyyy?

(@arleedraw, that's amazing honestly)

konachelona

HUEY, that's really cool! Except for Hanako, the main characters of Love is Strange are based on members from a certain rock group. I'm not gonna reveal who they are, but if you're a fan of classic rock... It should be fairly obvious. /)w(\

I don't have much up for her at the moment, but my magical girl 'sona Nerissa has an outfit that's like a fusion of Mami Tomoe and Sayaka Miki's. (She uses a gun like Mami, too.) Her personality, on the other hand, is sort of a mix between Sailor Venus and Sailor Jupiter... with Sailor Neptune's powers. I love my mahou shojos.
