Dorky References In Character Design

Posted 6 years, 11 months ago (Edited 5 years, 2 months ago) by Lonestarcelt

Is there anything more fun than creating new characters? Probably not...but there are certainly things that we enjoy outside of that creative process. From movies we love to watch, songs we listen to on repeat, books we can go back to over and over, and games we could play for hours if not days on end, and as a result. Sometimes, intentionally or not. We inject a bit of our other loves into the creative process. This thread is for that very purpose. Was your character's name a reference to someone from your favorite book? Was their fashion sense lifted from a show you watched? Did you get their hairstyle from an anime you saw ages ago or did some aspect of their past come about from listening to that song that you just love? Why not post the connections here? All references from big to small. From details that may seem super obvious to you to the minor minutia that someone only as in-depth in whatever lore as you would even start to recognize? It doesn't matter. If you have something that helped influence your character why not share it here and let everyone know, not only something that went into your creative process, but also maybe introduce people to something new.

Examples:
Your character's pet is named after something from a video game
Your character wears a bit of jewelry taken from some part of a short story
Your character has a phone charm of some video game faction

Please note: This is just a thread for references. Sure these references could inform large parts of a character's design or world but there's a difference between that and say a fan character for whatever bit of media they were made for. Nothing against fan characters it is just not the goal of this thread. However, if you have a fan character who has a reference to some other bit of media? Say a wizard for the Harry Potter universe who loves a particular band from the 90s enough to have some merch on them to a Homestuck fantroll with some obscure video game reference? They are more than welcome here. In essence.

X: A fan character on their own
✔: A fan character with a reference in their design to some outside media.

Ramiel zinnia

ramiel is named after the angel from NGE (mostly because my fp said necrozma reminded them of ramiel)

ramiel's design is also inspired by okuu from touhou project, as i used her to faceclaim before ramiel had a unique design200px-Th11Utsuho.png

Sonie Jewel SonieTheDog

Sonie's outfit is based off of Eleven's outfit from Stranger Things!

I changed the pink dress to a pink shirt because I hate wearing and drawing dresses. Plus it's one of the few outfits that I think look good on her *grumbles*

I'm really bad at outfits ;w;

Belx Huntrun Ramazikaa

Long hair, red coat, metal arm and metal leg, also alchemy symbols.

Belx was inspired by Edward Elric from Full Metal Alchemist when it comes to his metal limbs and outfit.

 Saisho R Shinoue Peridotite

In an RP his boyfriend bought him a kitten and he named the kitten Mr. Meowgi; a homage to Mr. Miyagi.

littlebirby

uhhh inara is named after the character in firefly/serenity, jenkins is named after the train butler in the adventure zone who also wears a bowtie, and koro is really distantly based off of IM_HAPPY.gif (SERIOUS warning for blood/gore/real bad stuff, explore at your own risk!!)

and a lot of my characters (which are to be uploaded) were originally designed/had backstories that paralleled those of urban legends/spooky stories, but theyve grown a lot from then c:

 Paulie lemmings

His hat was a The Catcher in the Rye reference. I’m still debating over keeping it on him though.

 Reni Renigee

One of her outfits is inspired by Gravity Falls, another has the Steven Star Shirt in sweater form

Kipinä Caine

The shirt Kipinä is wearing in her reference image is directly based on Romeo's attire from Takarazuka's Romeo & Juliet (2010). She is just one big walking Takarazuka and bifauxnen reference though, in the spirit of Sailor Uranus and Oscar from Rose of Versailles.

 Goomie ObakePrince

Goom's name was actually a bit of a homage to the pokemon goomy? Its one of my favs, and I actually hadn't realized it at first! I made a pokemon team for him just for the fun of it and was like, "Oh yeah, Goomie would definitely have a Goomy."

Kattenkvvaad

The reference in Taro's mask design should be obvious to anyone who's ever played and/or watched anything from the Danganronpa series. It's a nod to the original version of this character, who is a Danganronpa fan-character (I have more versions of this character than I probably should lol)

RadiantRaindragon

Pretty much Ana's whole character is inspired by Harry Potter witches, specifically Bellatrix Lestrange. Everything from her crazy evilness to her obsessive love for her boss.

Rikk has a skull mask and red feathers because he was based on that shaman dude from the Banjo-Kazooie games, Mumbo Jumbo. (I loved Banjo-Kazooie as a kid, it was one of the first games I remember playing.)

Shadmé ShadmeTheAngel

Shadmé's design used to be heavily inspired by Shadow the Hedgehog! I've changed her sneaker design so that they aren't a huge rip-off, but her hairstyle is so iconic for me at this point that I wouldn't feel right changing it. XD
