How do you tag your characters?

Hi! So I've just made a tag directory for easier navigation through my OC collection, and I was wondering: how do you guys tag your characters? Which kind of traits do you tag? Which ones would you never tag? Do you have any "joke" tags? Do you use tags a lot or not at all?

I thought it could be interesting to share our ways of using this functionality, maybe it will give some ideas or inspiration to TH members who might be struggling with tags!

I have this organized-chaotic tag directory that is divided to gender/sex/sexuality, character types, species, adopts, worlds and the "other" section contains mostly joke tags. My whole directory is here

My joke tags are probably those worth mentioning and they're the following:

aska-ray

i tag with:
gender
over 18
if they have a ref
race (as in human, etc)
if they are an original species, the species gets tagged
and an X for me if they are public because lmao i have about 200 hidden profiles

my joke tags are "megane" for glasses and "one-eyed squad" for well

anyway i dont like looking at lots of tags because i really think it's ugly looking

I try to keep as few  tags as possible to keep things clean. If tags were just used for the search function, I'd add more, but as they kinda work as categories within your profile, then I use tags that can have some use to me. I mostly sort them by species type (human, anthro, feral) so that it is easier to browse through a specific kind of creatures despite them being from different universes (then different folders).

Then I have  the "roleplayable" and "shippable" tags that might be useful when I get time to roleplay again.

I'm not sure what other kind of tags would be useful ?

I have a tag bulletin! I use lots and lots of tags, and some that aren't on there cuz nobody needs to see them LMAO but yeah! Mostly sorting gender, species, artist, etccccc

Here's my tag directory for the specific tags, but I generally use the following tag categories on every profile:

▶︎ Body type. Are they humanoid, anthro, or feral?
▶︎ Species. More specific species, excluding ethnicity.
▶︎ Ethnicity. Most applicable for my demons, since those are most numerous. Also includes if they're pureblooded.
▶︎ Gender and sexuality.
▶︎ Age group, like toddler, young adult, elder, ancient, etc. all relative to their species
▶︎ Faction.
▶︎ Time period. Either modern or past.
▶︎ Favouritism. Tags such as fav character, fav design, if I want art, and my personas.
▶︎ Completion. From complete all the way to badly needs rewrite.
▶︎ Detail. From highly detailed to empty.

In the end my profiles end up having a ton of tags, which is an unfortunate side effect of having as many tags as this, but I like browsing in my tags! If I could hide tags, I would tag so many more things like eye colour, skin colour, hairstyle, etc. just to play around with, but no one wants a 20 scroll ling tag section to look at c':

i only have a couple but im probs gonna overhaul the tags

current tags are suggestive_okay and gore_okay which . are what they sound.

mostly as a guide of others on whos okay to draw in x situation

I only tag their species, sexuality, and ethnicity honestly. I also tag that they are feral, because all of mine are.

I do not tag their gender, because they are all girls.

Loving this post though! I am always up for new tag ideas.

I really should make a tag directory tbh but I always forget...

But, uh, I tend to categorize by:

  • Gender
  • Alignment (good/heroes, neutral, evil/villains)
  • Age group (children, teenagers, adults)
  • Series appearance (like all characters appearing in Genjitsutouhi have the tag)
  • Species/subspecies
  • Affiliations (like Blue Court angels, Knight Clan vampires, Wonderlandians)
  • Profile/art status (needs official art, completed profile, etc.)

They get kind of messy but that does it for me!

I only bother with 2.
Gender and if they are over or under 18 in physical appearance.

I'm lazy and even though I found a way to mass edit tags hence why I even have those two, I dunno what else is really needed, humans and anthros already have a folder split, I am of the mind that all mine can always use more art, and I just don't bother with caring over a complete profile or not.

But I give people who manage an extensive list of tags their due, that's good stuff, just not for me~

Sadismancer

My tags are race and gender, simple as. "Male" or "Female" then "Human" or "Humanoid" or "Customspecies" or "Dragon" etc etc. Oh and if they're from a fandom I put that too.

Taebasco

i usually tag them with gender, what pronouns to use, if they are forever homed, tent or ufs/t, and then some other random tags.
