How do you tag your characters?

Posted 6 years, 2 months ago (Edited 4 years, 20 days ago) by fuelli

Hi! So I've just made a tag directory for easier navigation through my OC collection, and I was wondering: how do you guys tag your characters? Which kind of traits do you tag? Which ones would you never tag? Do you have any "joke" tags? Do you use tags a lot or not at all?

I thought it could be interesting to share our ways of using this functionality, maybe it will give some ideas or inspiration to TH members who might be struggling with tags!

I tag mine based on

  • Gender
  • Sexuality
  • General species form (human(oid)/anthro/feral/misc)
  • Universe
  • Band
  • Band position. Lots OCs are in bands so I'll tag them as thier main instrument (guitarist/drummer/singer/bassist/etc)
  • Whether I'm seeking art of them
  • RP readiness
  • Special traits, like whether they have magic, or if they're undead or divine or smth.
  • Joke characters get thier own tag

I make it clear for myself to only tag:

- Gender (Male, Female, Nonbinary, and Genderfluid)

- Age (Child 1-12, Adult 18-49, Elder 50, and ImmortalAgeless)

- If they are adopted

- What stories they are in

- What universe they are in

- and lastly what Generation they are (When I made them. I make characters with a friend of mine named C-V-I-S (Malachi) and he lets me include mine and his characters into the same universe so we oftentimes log into each other's toyhouse and adjust each other's tags. So far I've had the restraint from adding age, gender, and adopted tags to his characters. but anyways, generation tags mean:
Gen 1. The OGs (OCs I made before I met Malachi.)
Gen 2. Development (OCs I made as soon as I met Malachi.)
Gen 3. Expansion (OCs I made after I met Malachi. Most of these were made in early 2019)
Gen 4. Touch-ups (OCs made in late 2019, around September.)
and finally Gen 5. Getting Serious (Ocs made from two months ago until now.)

I tag the

-gender (male, female, nonbinary, genderqueer etc)
-species (canine, witch, god, alien etc)
-theme (clown, posessed, vent oc)
-ability/ies (mostly elemental magic)

I recently thought making tags for minors and adults as well.

TheSaturnianWildcat

so what i usually do is:

  • gender
  • sexual/romantic orientation
  • species
  • humanoid/anthro/feral
  • universe
  • element (saturnia only)
i also have a handful of other tags for either myself or just for forum games or such
  • draw plz (for art games)
  • af (if theyre on artfight)
  • redone ref (for my use, to see if theyve got an updated reference)
  • updated bio (same as above but for bios)
  • new icon needed (if i need to redraw their icon)
  • some other small tags for saturnia mostly, just to see if ive got a base done for their species or not; these being b(ase), n(o base) and u(nique)
this thread also has me thinking i should go add adult and minor tags sometime
emoalien

I usually go by year created, species, identity, source material/type of character, my boundaries on NSFW content, maybe an aesthetic or two, and the obligatory forever home tag.

Ashymations

I have a tag directory on my front character page! The main ones are listed below and as to keep it short, I only tag stuff that I have (enough) characters for (eg. I don't have many gender identities or sexualities because I don't have OCs that have those identities);

  • Body Shape - Humanoid, Anthro & Feral
  • Species - Ware-Jomys, Kemonomimi & Pony
  • Gender - Male, Female, Non-Binary (Umbrella term), Genderfluid Transgender (both FTM/MTF) & Demigirl
  • Sexuality - Heterosexual, Bisexual, Homosexual (both men and non-men), Asexual, Pansexual, Polyamorous & Unlabled
  • Miscellaneous - Artfight characters, Fandom AUs (Split tabs of characters) & My main 5 OCs
  • Year 'obtained' (When I created an OC or when I obtained it from someone else) - 2020 - 2023

I also have misc tags that I use like fandom tags, certain aesthetics, sub-species but I don't add them to the directory as to avoid clogging it ^^

Orisa

Too many tags bothers me, so I have about only 2 (not counting base tags)

I give tags based on what universe I've decided to put them in

Or

How badly I'd like them drawn.

Kairots

Im working on a directory at the moment, i usually tag by:

status (active, retired, sona etc...)
gender
species
powers/abilities
fandom/series/universe
(occasionally) aesthetic/theme

along with joke and other miscellaneous tags, though those
aren't included in the directory because i see no point in it.
I'll maybe add age range and sexuality later on.

To put it mildly, I am obsessed with putting everything "on the shelves.", because I am incredibly annoyed by the mess and I just like to sort information and statistics, which tags help well. Each character on my page has a tag with the name of their folders, fandom, species, sometimes occepation, and whether they needs a redesign/name/reference :_)

i don't use many tags... my tags are humanoid, anthro, fave, not lf art, wip, and a couple of fandoms. i have a lot more characters on my second account but i think the only tag i use for them is "former main." now i want to tag them as humanoid/anthro/etc too though. i might like to use more tags. idk
