Characters based on real people?

Posted 5 years, 10 months ago (Edited 5 years, 6 months ago) by hedgemaze

Are any of your characters based on people in real life? Not necessarily the whole character, but maybe they share speech patterns with your friend, or personality quirks with your brother, or you gave them the same haircut as a girl in your class-- I'm just curious about the little ways we put our own lives into our characters!

Tell us what your character shares with a real person!

  • It should go without saying, but please be careful not to put actual identifying personal information about any real people here.
  • Thinking about people in our immediate lives is what prompted this thread, but real people whom you don't know are also ok if they served as inspirations!
  • And if your characters are based on you in some ways, that's fine too!

Haggis hedgemaze

I'll pop in with different characters over time, but I'll start with this guy.

I probably haven't mentioned his (lack of an) accent on TH before, but the "14-year-old transfer student from London who annihilated his accent within the first year to fit in" thing is 100% based on a girl I went to school with! His twin brother doesn't care what people think, which is why he still has more of an accent.

In terms of people I don't know, he's also based in some ways on Ricky Wilson (another creative guitarist with strange guitar tunings) and Jimi Hendrix (also played an upside-down righty guitar). The idea of twins in a pop punk band was based on Good Charlotte, and it's skewed pretty far away now, but originally his and his bandmate Roadie's relationship was inspired by the complicated and intense relationship between Carl Barât and Pete Doherty in The Libertines.

Kyrie Seiden

Kyrie is somewhat of a mix between my older sister, and a colleague I worked with during an internship. They are both really different, but they make an interesting mix, ahah.
Of course, that's only about behaviour, lifestyle, and other background things. The appearance of the character has nothing to do with neither my sister nor my colleague :p

Claude Lovelace Caine

Claude was super loosely based on my elementary school bully, heh. That person was always seeking out attention from the guys and was very physical and flirtatious with practically everyone, even during the time they were dating. I grew up in a awful small village behind god's back so this was kind of common though, but nevertheless I gave Claude the same sort of constant yearning for attention and affection from his peers.

Eros ChosenUndeaad

I kinda based Eros' appearance on one of my classmates. They share the same kind of hair (both of them have curly hair, both of them dye their hair and their original hair color is the same. However, my classmate's dye is of a totally different color from Eros' dyes) and piercings. Howeverm the similarities end up there since my classmate is female and Eros is male lol

Cereal Killer tim-in-a-box

cereal killer is basically my guy

he was in comics before I even met my guy, but when I did meet him then after that I sterted making the character more like my guy XD

Kassandra 'Sunny' Garcia Atticfail

I usually dont base on real persons, but Sunny is an exeption. Her design is based on Mars Argo!

Kofepei

The author of Brook was inspired by people from instagram, so, why not?

Eli Kenmai

i actually based this design on one of my online friends! He also happens to have piercings and flowing locks like this except theyre black and instead of green eyes, my friend has bright blue ones...
They share some traits too

funnily enough my friend read his profile and said they wanted to marry him

Ezra atempause

his tons of unnecessary jewelry is pretty much based on two different classmates who both were wearing just so much stuff like this everyday lmao

 Milo cosmicconundrum

a large portion of my highschool ocs are roughly modeled off of people i met during my experience in highschool. for example:

  • milo is a cross between one of my classmates and kyoya from ouran.
  • carlos and daniel are both based off of classmates who participated in science-math competitions, and their character arcs are roughly based off my own personal character development from my time doing science-math stuff.
Lars Davis Stardust-Squid

Lars is not the easiest character I've developed as he's based primarily on an abusive/manipulative friend I used to have.

His obsession with the idea of dating one of my other OC's came from how much said friend wanted to be with me.

Roadie hedgemaze

Booping the thread with another character. I love seeing everyone's answers. :')

I don't think it was intentional originally, but Roadie reminds me very much of one of my brothers, and I keep him in mind when I write him. Not in the obvious ways, just his general personality and attitude. My brother is the same sort of chill, unflappable guy who's lazy but takes his work very seriously, and hates drama and nonsense but will be combative if you push him. And they both love metal and jam bands.

He's also based on people like Paul Languedoc (soundman for Phish-turned-guitar maker) and Wylie Gelber (bassist for Dawes/the band's jack-of-all-trades repair guy).

Alcott Northwind PicklePantry

Alcott is influenced by my dad. He's a tough guy that doesn't take bullshit, even in the classroom, and has an authentic love for history. So their jobs and somewhat of their personalities are the same, although Alcott is a bit gruffer. It was more the character concept that was influenced by my dad, but about 95% of him is his own thing.
