Show me your character playlists!

I can't believe I haven't seen this thread before, honestly!

A lot of us have associated theme songs or playlists for our characters, relationships, or stories-- show off your favorites here!

How do you choose songs? Do you pick songs whose lyrics fit the character, songs the character might listen to, songs whose feel reminds you of them-- or other reasons? I'd love to hear your thought process!

Vanik Waltz

I have a lot of character themes, but it occurs to me I only have one "playlist"!

I made this 8-tracks playlist for this guy a while ago: https://8tracks.com/laiska/rubies-and-ash

Normally I pick character themes by songs I think describe the character lyricwise, or else have the correct "feel" for them. In the case of this list, I just by and by came across songs that were kind of melancholy and tragic in a self-destructive way, that suited the various acts of self-sabotage Vanik perpetuates in his life. A long long while ago I used to pick songs based just on lyrics for my characters, but these days it's mostly about feel!

Most recently when I'm doing quick character flesh out it helps me to have music that suits them soundwise as a 'hook,' a lot of which I end up linking in as part of their profiles, or help me develop them somehow!

In Makeda's case, her theme is actually her namesake as well!

Some other ones I just particularly like:

But I find that if I don't pick a song at the outset, it can be hard to pinpoint later! So I have a lot of faves who are still looking for their musical flavour~

As for me, it's usually a combination-- but leaning more towards songs whose "feel" reminds me of the character, with less emphasis on lyrics (as long as the lyrics don't contradict the character), but if the lyrics really fit them I'll use that too. It's often, but not necessarily, something they'd realistically listen to.

Most of my more closely-associated songs I don't post on their TH profiles because the songs would spoil something, though!

I'll come back with others later, but Izzy here is really straightforward.

  • No Culture Icons - The Thermals - I've always associated Izzy heavily with The Thermals and I think he'd sound something like Hutch Harris (the singer); the band has always had this very independent renegade sort of lo-fi punk aesthetic, and that's him. Their first album and especially this song have this very restless iconoclastic theme, and it reminds me very much of him. The song is also his entrance theme in an OC wrestling AU one of my friends runs.
  • Because You're Young - Cock Sparrer - Cock Sparrer are a great classic, very blue-collar, punk band, and he'd love them, being gritty and "real". This song is about being young and dumb and thinking you're always right, and, well, that's Izzy.
  • Bastards of Young - The Replacements - Similarly, it's another song about youth, but from the opposite perspective-- a song very much with a chip on its shoulder, about a generation feeling abandoned, with nothing to prove to anyone but themselves.
  • The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle - Sex Pistols - In canon, Izzy's pretty obsessed with the Sex Pistols (and in several ways they inspired my comic in general)-- it's that "real"/iconoclastic thing again, and that's what he sets out his life to be. The song is pretty obvious-- Izzy (entering his punk band into a TV music competition) is all for using the music industry for his own purposes, and thinks they're the future.

 Valentin Medveditsin Ledokol

Aside from my city OCs, I rarely create a proper playlist for OCs in other plots. Partially because the layout format I used for those don't have a particular section to include their playlist without adding a big chunk of text into whatever section I decide to stuff the playlist into. :'D

I'll start with Valentin because he's the first ever city OC I created and for every song chosen for his playlist, there's a concrete reasoning/historical facts behind each of them. His playlist is also the only one so far that comprised entirely of music from his native country.

  •           Song of the Volga Boatmen - Possibly his first ever 'image' song for the fact that he lives next to the Volga River for a thousand of years. Barge haulers were something that represent the peasant class back in the Russian Empire era, showcasing the stark difference between peasant in rural and the lavish nobles living in Saint Petersburg. By living next to the Volga, Valentin used to see peasants in his area doing this type of labor work regularly as Yaroslavl was a major trade center during that era.
  •           My Sweet and Tender Beast Waltz - Despite this being a soundtrack from a film in the 70's (USSR era), I associated this song with Valentin's life during the middle 18th century to beginning of the 20th century when he was a flourishing cultural center. Back then his value as somewhat refined culture life (for a provincial town that is) reached its peak with new city plan by Catherine the Great, unique churches that merchants in the town built as a kind of competition between them (one of these churches actually featured on the 1000 rubles banknote) and also refers to Fyodor Volkov, who remembered as the founder of first Russian theater who staged his first play in Yaroslavl. So in that era, I can see him attending and waltzing in social balls hosted in his town every now and then.
  •            Vot mchitsya troyka pochtovaya - This song's name is something like 'the mail troyka running by the Volga' (there's an English translated lyric in the vid's description), again symbolizing his life next to this river. Although unlike the boatmen song, this song is supposed to represent the atmosphere during the winter when lives are more grim and lonely.
  •            Korobeyniki - There's a bit of historical reason behind this one. Originally this song was a poem written by Nikolay Nekrasov - a writer who strived to showcase the hardship of Russian peasants' life during the 19th century. During his childhood, Nekrasov used to live in his father's estate in the outer area of Yaroslavl, where assumingly he saw the life of the barge hurlers constantly. Nowadays this estate was turned into a museum. I chose this orchestra/instrumental version because it's the type of music Valentin himself can play (he can play domra and bayan(Russian accordion), as seen used in this vid).
  •            Barynya / Valenki - Barynya is a type of fast Russian folk dance shown in this clip, something that I imagine Valentin, being a prominent cultural provincial town at one time, can dance almost effortlessly. Meanwhile, 'Valenki' is the name of a Russian folk song that mixed into the music at the start of the dance in this clip.
  •            'Leto' - One of my favorite dance suites from the Igor Moiseyev dance company. With Valentin already capable to dance barynya, I just hope with some training of ballet dancing him might be able to do this type of dance as well but probably difficult because he's not that refined physically. Like...I mean, imagine trying to make an ice hockey player(which is a sport Valentin is most proficiently playing) do ballet moves...definitely gonna take a lot of time.

Some of my characters do have single songs that remind me of them only one character really has a playlist though it's more for his story so I can listen to it and get in the right mind for writing the story. Always looking for more songs to add to it though.

The character being Roman, his playlist is here

I must say it is fun to put together a playlist to listen to while writing a story though it can be hard to put them together.

When it comes to finding the songs it's mostly to do with the lyrics for me, sometimes though not all of the lyrics need to be right if the feel of the song is right.

Nejire has a full on spotify playlist here for himself.

Aamona has a few songs in her bio for my own inspiration for her lore wise

All three of my Triclopt's have playlists in their bios

Abelietum cosmicconundrum

i love making playlists for characters asdhblajssd. most of my active, developed ocs have playlists, but since there are so many (and some of the playlists are close to an hour long) i will choose one to share for the moment.

my most recently finished one is for abelietum! her playlist is intended to give off a spooky vibe. all except one track are instrumentals. the full playlist is roughly an hour long, but you don't have to listen to all of the pieces.

Graffiti

my playmoss is full of them lol (actually i think all of my playlists are about an oc in one way or another) making them is so fun, especially since a lot of my ocs are based off songs to begin with :p i try to find songs that match the general vibe of the character, and lyrics that relate to them/their story , or sometimes its just music i think they'd listen to !

I've actually been working on a playlist for one of my oldest ocs for a while! A lot of his songs are based on the feeling rather than the lyrics, but I do have one song on the playlist (don't wanna be by the score) that I place as his "theme".

I keep his playlist on my Spotify and I'm constantly adding new songs to it. He's got a mix of modernish music and bard songs/intrumentals, given that he's a Skyrim character.

Dolce

I don't have designated playlists per character, but I do have songs that I associate with some characters!! I generally choose them based on if the lyrics inspired me or fit the character, or the general mood of the song fits the character.

Tl;dr I use music as inspiration a lot :'))
