đź’ˇ Why does your OC exist (in meta)?

Posted 5 years, 5 months ago (Edited 5 years, 4 months ago) by fuelli

Hi! A lot of us have OCs with fleshed-out backstories and complex personalities... but what was the first thing, the first trait you've come up to for them? What made you create this character? The answer can be as serious ("I wanted to create a character to share with my experiences with <event>") or silly ("I really like pasta so I've made a character who likes pasta") as you want!

Just have fun and please keep things civil ♥

Geneviève Stampdale ElegiacMarquise

About Geneviève, the first concept I came up when I first thought her was simply to being the arranged wife of a kinda sadistic gay man which used her mainly for a social cover in a Regency England setting. Since I've designed her husband Rupert for a shonen-ai/yaoi role-play forum, she was first to be depicted as a secondary character, but during these years i got her I slowly grown up being affectionate to her as much as her husband and her lover. Actually the main concept about her is not changed as much, with the only exception of a change of era and the fact she's now important for the plot's developping.

xminheehee

i wanted her for the design (and yes, the only thing she had was a design - no name, no personality, only a design) but i also didn't want to let her rot. guess what! i came up with ideas for her and the first thing that came onto my mind was to make her work at a suicide prevention thing. and over time, i fleshed this idea out.

ASTROBOT hedgemaze

ASTROBOT exists because my friend Njike was visiting me the same weekend when I got this bootleg Xabungle ("ASTROBOT") in the mail from ebay (I collect vintage toy robots), and we were playing my doofy childhood board games... so when we were playing Electronic Talking Mall Madness, we figured we'd spice things up with ASTROBOT as player 3, and send pictures and updates to our friend group on Skype about this robot who was invading the mall, manic for savings and destroying the food court in a pout when someone else beat him to the last item in a shop.

And he just... became this beloved character in our group's stuff. When I started an OOTP baseball sim league with the same friends, I made ASTROBOT the NPC scout for fun, and so that's how he became this ridiculous killer robot who loves shopping at the mall as much as he loves lasering people and scouting out the very best baseball players.

TBN Ytonide

So basically, I was eating s'mores and had this thought that I can probably make anything dangerous. So then I made a s'mores murderer. *shrugs* His idea changed a lot over the course too, but the idea of somehow at least incorporating some chocolate, cookie/graham cracker, and marshmellows idea stuck for this sugary sticky death lmao

 Ross M0DERND0C

"Ross" was actually a nickname my online son, Ray, gave me. At the same time, I was also watching uhhh Blue Exorcist + we had an ongoing joke that I was a demon (due to a password my old school had gave me with 666 in it). I had my sketchbook in hand and started to draw while watching anime and now Ross exists!! It was stupid, but worth it, and now he just... exists. And loves Christmas.

Nefeli Jojo_Paku

Nefeli exists because i wanted a kind character, who wasn't afraid to take risks. she kind of grew from there, but that's her roots.

Eda Inaka Akeya

lmao Eda was a totally random thought, like 100%. I just thought, "Hey, what about an Asian girl with a really heavy southern accent?" And here she is, an adorable girl with a heavy southern accent.

Caine Williams♡ TheStrayCat

Caine originally came to be as a Ninetales character in a zombie Pokemon RP site! He was created to help me deal with the recovery stage after seriously self harming for many years, and he himself had a necklace of razors (so edgy I know haha)

He was originally a vent character, I even had him lose 8/9 tales until I joked he was a Onetale lol But then he really became an accidental representation of myself. He's me if I were braver and more violent, really. He's since left his Pokemon roots behind and grown up both in maturity and age and I'd never call him an official sona, but he'll always be very, very near and dear to my heart! c:

Sunvaren

Warning: Rambling incoming! XD

I wanted to create a character for an RP I joined recently who wants to hug people and be friends with everyone, but at the same time, he isn't a pacifist and is capable of fighting (plus he is the host of a pessimistic mood demon named Angu and one big tragic thing happened to him in his childhood), so Asriel was created! He's my favorite boy right now and I love him a lot >v<

Roxanne was created on the same day as Asriel, but she actually came first. I made her a dragon because I don't have a lot of those and I love dragons a lot. Also, the second the idea for her popped up in my head, I imagined a tough vibe coming from her. She is aware that there will always be negativity in the world, yet she pals around with someone who doesn't seem to want to acknowledge that. She's calm, but she can also expressive at the same time, especially when interacting with Asriel XD

Peter was created to be a modern cinnamon roll and he somehow ended up being one of the most powerful magic-users in the entirety of his world (it was originally going to be Luke, but I thought it would suit Peter better because of how his father and family in general was). He's also supposed to be the pop culture nerd of all of my OCs, and he is! Whenever I think of pop culture references (especially Alien), I think of my cinnamon roll, and I think I've become like him with the pop culture references, actually-

Ah, Callum... he's basically my first fully developed OC, and he's pretty special to me >v< The idea for him was a sympathetic human with a dark backstory who is associated with dark/shadow magic; when I brought him into the RP that defined him, I added a curse to him, which was non-specific enough to serve as a cool little plot twist ;) Now he's sorta my mascot/main OC!...Aside from Peter, who's my other mascot/main OC. I didn't even realize just how similar he and Peter are until a couple months ago: they both specialize in dark/shadow magic, they're both technically kids (though Callum is older), they both have not-so-great fathers, they both have entities of sorts in their heads (the being that was in Callum is free now and a good guy lol), and they both have female animal companions with a scar over their right eyes, and their names even begin with an R! Wowie I love this

Justine Lusine Isoprene

OH I LOVE THIS THREAD rambling about how my OCs were created is my favorite thing!! Same with reading about that sort of thing!

Justine here exists because I wanted to make a Justice Club for an RP setting called Hell College, since I thought it'd be kinda funny and interesting to have a whole bunch of folks obsessed with legality in a place full of demons. I was thinking about how I didn't have any werewolf OCs, so somehow the concept of a werewolf in a cheap Halloween costume trying her best just kinda sprang up from there!

Renigee

Usually when I create a character it just kind of happens, but there are a few I created intentionally!

Essa - Nora needed a polar opposite twin. The opposite of a charming business lady is a modest breakfast lady, right?

Lizzy/Ozzy - Kaleb and Basil needed a  t i n y  companion to teach the way of the plant

Ru-Q - Ooh, the Rutilated Quartz gem looks cool, let's make an edgy monstrosity out of it~

Umeko - Agnes needs a girlfriend. Not just any girlfriend. One with a missing body part. And so, the one-eyed wonder was made!

Vier - Every mad scientist needs a cute animal companion right? Or am I mixing up the character archetype?

Memesogic

I always make characters to either relate to me or for a plot device. Some of them are just for fun and have no personal stories, but I try to make them as interesting as possible. For example, Crystalline is the ex girlfriend fo Vince etc.

Heck, I just have a bunch of characters just for fun

Aarix

Back again. They're all set to private right now because I'm not sure if I'm keeping them, but embarrassingly a lot of my characters were randomly generated people to fill whatever role I had in mind. As in, I made a little generator which spat out a random age, gender, appearance, occupation, ethnicity, and a few personality traits, etc. Super basic stuff but better than nothing when you have never experienced inspiration in your life. I think of a role I need, generate a person I like, then work backwards to fit them in. Here are some of the more central cast members.

Spargo exists because I heard the name one day and was like "fuck that's the most legendary name ever, I need a character with that name."
I didn’t need to use the generator for him because he already existed as a fully-fledged archetype in my brain :’)
Spargo is like how he is basically because I wanted someone on-par with Ryn's level of annoying. Then I decided that Ryn & Spargo needed to have a shitty band.

Sharpie exists MAINLY because I wanted to have a character named Sharpie, and partially because Ryn & Spargo's shitty band needed a drummer. I consulted my trusty person generator, which gave me a 63 year old Egyptian engineer dude. Instead of re-rolling, I decided to run with this, but also that it would make more sense if the 63 year old Egyptian engineer dude was our drummer's father. Sharpie happened. Sharpie's name isn't actually Sharpie. He's not a shitty musician either. Maybe I should cut him free from Bogfreak and generate someone else :') Sharpie has since ended up as an outlet for the knowledge acquired from my recent special interest in music theory, because as fucking if Ryn/Spargs know anything about that.

Lix exists because there was a conspicuously gender-neutral space where another band member could have existed, before I decided they didn't need more guitars. A placeholder, basically? I did decide that even if I didn't need another guitarist, I needed another character. Lix ended up distilling out the band's original punk sensibilities (after Sharpie ended up turning the whole thing too pretentious & classy) and kind of just running with that. I just,,, wanted a punk :') (Ryn babey u can put as many spikes on ur clothes as u want, you'll never satisfy me you spineless lefty) It never felt right to assign them a binary gender after months spent reffering to them as "them" so... I never did :^)

Sal was invented to be Sharpie's fiance which I know is terrible. Also because I needed somebody to take the piss out of everyone else. I also wanted someone to be So Into the footy, as an excuse to insert that weird culture in somewhere and remind everyone its STRAYA MATE. This is Sal's defining character trait.

The fact that Lix and Sharpie's names are so on-the-nose is pure coincidence; despite their reasons for existing, I swear I was not trying to make them sound like random music-adjacent terms :')

Valair is much, much older than any of these idiots, predating the universe entirely-- She was made slightly before Ryn, for the RPG, when I realised the party was in desperate need of a Healer, and also some common sense. A good dynamic developed between these party members, so she stuck around even after she was supposed 2 vanish back into the sands of time-- Valair existed specifically for a single fight which took place on a flashback of another one of my characters.

This character's name was Darres, and he has possibly the most inexplicable and convoluted reason for existing out of all my characters.

Darres is Xaanik’s (an earlier version of Xaanik, anyway) wrestlesona. Or, he was. My brother was writing an extremely zany story which involved a scene where the characters had to brawl it out in the WWE arena. In order to orchestrate this, Xaanik had to lose all his memories. He took on a new persona, one for wrestling, which my brother came up on the spot.

Sir Darres, Knight of Pheliosta.

My brother had come up with this name by going on deviantart, clicking “random”, and going with whatever inspired him first. This happened to be fanart for an apparently-pretty-obscure manga called Vampire Game. Neither of us knew anything about it, and it didn’t matter-- the name was perfect, it inspired the perfect wrestling persona for the next couple of scenes.

Sir Darres was a throwaway “character”, but as a little nod to my brother’s fantastic writing, I decided to put Darres in as a cameo in the RPG. Except, for some reason, he never stopped hanging around after his miniquest. I had bonded with Darres. He was becoming more and more of an actual character, with an increasingly elaborate backstory and subplot. He never got an incarnation in the modern universe, he just couldn't fit there, but I love him nevertheless.

Darres is the entire reason Ryn and Valair ever existed (and, by extension, sharpie, sal, lix, etc, etc). I owe him my life, thanks Vampire Game!
