Life Gems

StarDragons with multiple life gems split their magic between all their gems. If a StarDragon were to lose a gem, it would weaken them, and leave them feeling as if they're not complete. That being said, on rare occasions, is has been known that a StarDragon with multiple life gems may have a dud. This means, the gem does not contain any magic... which does not mean the StarDragon is naturally weaker, but simply does not share their magic to that gem. That gem can be removed without dealing damage to the StarDragons magic, but it would hurt a great deal to have something attached to them pulled off. The psuedo gems are the same color as the gems that contain magic, however when the dragon dies, it keeps the color while the rest fade as the magic leaves the gem.

StarDragons with loose floating gems, such as StarDashers and StarWeavers can have their gems removed. Since that isn't their only gem (Dashers with the gems that adorn their sides and Weavers with the gem between their eyes), they do not die immediately. If moved too far from their gem however, they will parish. Having their main gem removed would also significantly weaken them. Additionally, this puts them in a docile and easily manipulated state.

To do this is not an easy task though. The StarCrafters use a mineral called Basut's Blood, a hard, deep red-near-black rock they manipulate into their tools to carve and chissle life gems to craft shapes and engrave. When melted, Basut's Blood turns into a tar like substance that one can put over the free floating life gem and negate the magic keeping it in place, in which the orb can be removed. The melting is a one time deal before the blood can no longer be used, and when the blood is washed away, the life gem can be put back in place.

Basut's Blood is extremely rare and difficult to get a hold of, and considering Crafters make more money off of engraving gems over forking it over to the Shooters for them to enslave someone in such a way, free floating gem removal is extremely rare.

The shards and gems are bound in place by, for the lack of better words, a binding magic. It's not seen as magic, since it does little more than keep the shards and gems floating in place, and does nothing beyond that.(
