My and @CaptainRei 's Pokemon characters are the only ones among our OCs who actually change and grow overtime, because they were "born" on a certain year. This is a timeline to keep track mainly of age differences and "next gen" births.
How do they work? For example, I got the game in which I created Argento in 2001, and he started his journey as a 10-years-old; that means his DoB is 10 years before, 1991, and that 2001 is the year in which the Johto saga happens.
There are also listed years of canon events and canon characters' births (written "(C)Name's birth")as they are in our world/headcanon.
For example, by having set the Johto saga in 2001, you can get to Kanto's saga (since it's 3 years prior); just calculate Red was 13 at the time, so here you have his DoB (in our world at least) as well!
