Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 5 years, 11 months ago (Edited 5 months, 6 days ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

Alexg47 What would you say be your favorite element to personify, or which do you think is your most developed one? ^^; Do you think you would make a noble gas element oc or possibly a radioactive one someday (if you haven't already done so ;O; )

I'll drop answers in here lol I rambled owo

1. The memes lmao ~ Okay but a more serious answer would be seeing how the little parts of each sign from each planet or house could correspond with ones actions or thoughts,  and seeing how many also most infinite combos of each are out there for every individual. Some are super unique and cool, meanwhile mine is just... sun: virgo, moon: virgo, rising: virgo xD those are the main three people think of. And as for the three main planets that seem to have a more direct impact on us (which are Mars, mercury, venus)... all three happen to be leo XD so... I suppose mine is unique in a way that some aspects are similar. I would suggest looking this stuff up since I'm not the best at explaining things ^^; But mainly most of the stereotypical things about virgo signs are pretty much accurate, save a couple things like complete perfectionist and health conscious lol. And for my leo signs things are a hit or miss  and sometimes for those they might not be my direct traits, but traits I like to see in others... xD Its confusing lol and I'm not expert but it's just fun for me xD

2. Oof my favorite Kirby game... well Super Star Ultra was my first game so that's pretty special ^^ I also liked Epic yarn, robobot, squeak squad. Oof I have a couple I didn't finish yet tho ;; like Mass Attack xD (and actually robobot is there too big oof) I should really play my games again but I haven't got the time ;O;

3. Hehe it is hard lol now that the stuff I'm learning now is more advanced ;; But anyway I chose to study it because I liked it in high school; I had a great chem teacher who was super nice and cool and made class pretty enjoyable. My friend and i both liked her and would help her out when we got bored at lunch and decided to walk around the school lol. She always had seating arraignments with my friend and i next to each other too save for one time but i digress. Even before that class, i liked to look at the periodic table and I just liked science in general, I even have this cute periodic table book from so long ago too xD. In contrast, I didn't really like my Biology class; the teacher was pretty chill and liked but idk I just didn't really like the class or maybe the way he taught it xD I did AP chem in high school too and I did decent enough xD it was def a step up and less fun XD but it was good and it helped me with my first yr gen chem class. I also would rather do a bunch of math/ equations than memorize long scientific names/functuons/structures for Bio. A n d theres hardly any chem majors in my college hahaha most science majors are in bio or nursing XD

4. A h h well. Years ago I read this story app/ game thing which featured a talking spaceship computer named Lloyd and... ever since then I kinda wanted to create some robot OC with the same name XD I really like that name for something tech related. However at the time I wasn't creative enough to come up with something sci fi-esque or how to make robot ocs so it just kinda became an on off lingering thought for a long time. I think what gave me inspiration would be looking at this dress in Love Nikki Dress Up Queen and I took ideas from that crossing part in the middle and the almost transparent sleeves to make what my Lloyd's main outfit looks like now. And ofc I had to create a human OC which is Yuros. I dunno what made me make them detectives but yeah xD Their initial idea would just be a human and android partnership in police work but in a future setting since I didn't have a future setting yet and kinda wanted one xD But after creating Leroy and Skye I have more of an idea of what their story could be; though prob not enough to reveal yet since I'm not great at story crafting lol ;; a h h anyway I'm glad you think they're cool so far :D

circlejourney Howdy, circ : p Do you have any particular favorite characters (or projects entirely) that aren't on Toyhouse yet? I see all those character names on your profile

Hey there! That's awesome, and those are beautiful photos! I love photographing landscapes too! :)

I think some of my favorite things to photograph are action shots in sports, when you can really capture the essence of the athlete's play and their movement (it's so hard to catch the right millisecond!)-- and I'm not exactly sure how to phrase this, but the mark people leave on the world. You could say urban decay but it's not specifically decay: it's shoes left on a stoop for someone to take; it's graffiti art that says "YOU ARE LOVED"; it's a curb-your-dog sign written by a child. I really love making a permanent record of these very small things that show a person was here once, whose story I'll never know, but I have this one little interesting glimpse.

GeckoSauce It's clear you've put a lot of dedication into your characters! Which ones would you say are your favorites? You seem to have created a lot of them yourself, but also quite a few that you didn't make. How often do you obtain characters from others? (Beautiful photos BTW!)

This got somewhat long, so it's in a spoiler tag.

"Is there any reason why you decided to go with orca as your persona?" The answer is probably not what you would expect. So one day, my science class took a look at the evolutionary adaptations of orcas. The next day, I had to come up with a username really quickly. I had to go to science class soon, so I remembered about the orcas and went with that. I used Kyogre as an avatar for a bit, then I wanted to make my own orca character instead. Thus, Orca was born. I've since developed a genuine fondness for both her and those beautiful dolphins in general <3 (If you didn't know, orcas are indeed dolphins. If you did know, congrats.)

If there's one other animal I'd associate myself with, it'd definitely be dragons. I've had an obsession with those (and dinosaurs) for ages. Considering most of my characters and drawings are reptiles, this shouldn't be surprising.

So for how I discovered TH...I had an Art Fight account, and I really liked how I could have profiles for my characters, but obviously, this was more geared towards the Art Fight game. I wanted this kind of organization for general purposes. I'd already seen and heard of TH through DA; I didn't know much about it, but I thought it was cool, so I got a code and made an account. Best decision ever.

My favorite Nintendo game? Oh, that's easy.640?cb=20171020172952&path-prefix=en

Orca Hello! I have more questions than one, but you don't have to answer on them all if you don't want to :"D Is there any reason why you decided to go with orca as your persona? Do you have any other animal that you associate with yourself?

Tell me about how did you stumble upon TH in general! It's quite interesting knowing how does anyone started their journey here! x)

And, lastly, what is your favorite Nintendo game of all time?

I don't really know why I love insects? Maybe it was due to that I loved to watch them while I was outside. I really loved ants and centepides. Maybe it was kinda to the point when my love was so stupid I was unironicaly crying when my friends tried to kill them. Machaons is nice too, I saved one from a dog! I can tell these stories all day long, friend.

My love for them is kinda, ehhh... Strange. While I'm afraid of wasps and bees I love them too. They are so nice? It's better not to anger them though and be careful with nature in general. Still, I'm watching my toes so I won't step on any small creature, or my day is ruined 8'')

And, about my style:

I developed my style really slow, I'm still deciding on it. I tried many things such as thin and thick lines, textures or not. Now I'm doing this fake 3D effect on lineart manualy and not strictly with red and blue. Yellow and cyan as example works too! But my biggest source of inspiration is still retro anime! Detective conan is the biggest one on the list. I'm so hyped to see these old episodes when they had to draw everything on paper.screen-shot-2014-07-29-at-1-12-32-am.png

...Please, watch old detective conan episodes with me.................... AHEM yeah, I'm really heavily inspired by old cartoons and animes. Something about them strikes me SO BAD

Thank you for your questions!

Alexg47

Daruby I have two questions, why do you like insects so much and how did you develop your art style, it's really neat.

I answered that question here.

Why do you personify the elements on the periodic table?

Okay. First you have to understand that I freaking love transformers. I love them a lot! I used to talk about them nonstop! I joined a website called Quotev and everyone I followed had usernames that were based on their OC. I had to make my OC. Long story short on that, I named her TitaniumWrench. Two years later, I was talking to someone and they began calling me Tani. I asked her why. She pulled ‘Tani’ from TitaniumWrench. It was better than naming my persona after me, and keeping within the ‘theme’ I made the last name Wenic, taking four letters out of Wrench. It became the name of my persona (at the time) and the name I use online.

Unlike most people who start out with the story then the characters, I started out by adopting Yin and Yang. They were fifty points each and adorable! The original story was the one the creator made for them. I didn’t like it. I changed it, but it did derive from their story. It took me a few weeks, but I came up with a story that would have Yin and Yang as it’s focus for a little. It’s one of the reasons why I’m unwillingly to sell them. They were my inspiration, and even the new title reflects that. ‘Balancing Act.’ That’s what the Yin and Yang sign basically is- the world and balance.

As for the synopsis, I don’t have one. Not yet. I haven’t gotten there. I’ll likely have that done later.

What made you choose the username that you did? What inspired you to want to write a story? What is the plot synopsis of said story?

Although Rory has Incomplete Info as a tag, I can tell there's been a lot of thought and love put into him. His appearance alone leaves a lot of questions over his backstory. But what I want to know is how long you've been developing him! Were there any changes you made to him? Was he one of your first vampire characters, and what got you into them?

Thank you for the question~

Rory isn't the first vampire character I have made, but he is the first I made out of the characters in his story. I've been developing him for, give or take, 3 years.  Originally Rory was supposed to be a rather old vampire with no real grip on what was happening in modern times. Honestly, he was supposed to be a super bit part OC that I was just going to use to world build and probably scrap once done. I just find it easier to make a new story if I start with a scrappable OC and then make the important ones once the world is set up. I'm not quite sure what happened, but I eventually scaled his age way back to him only being 200ish years old and changed his story to be about a dude that makes some bad decisions, gets his act together and wants to do better, but keeps falling back into his old bad habits. I liked these changes so much that I wound up making him a main OC. The story concept of 'actions have consequences' is more interesting to me than just a character being clueless.

I got into vampires because a couple years ago I started really enjoying making and learning about monsters. I've got a ton of self-made and actual mythological creatures to populate the backgrounds of my stories. Though, unlike most monsters, there is A LOT of media with vampires in it so it became pretty easy to get really into them compared to more obscure ones. Plus, the concept of vampires has a pretty interesting real-world history impact.

I GOT IT FROM WATCHING YOU

KEK but for Jey? First was the name, which came when Motherbeast was trying to write Jet's name and ended up making a typo, kekekekek. I added Walker to the title for jaywalker, and the irony that he's a detective. Starlightdrifter got a custom character (Normal Bob) designed by Raddishes, and I absolutely loved the design so I asked for one, but under the theme of detective dad. When I got the design and started writing, I had an idea to make him a grandpa instead, and a loving grandpa. I added a lil cliche tragic past to help push on his character, but mostly all of his backstory happened in the moment.

And DUDLEY! I wanted to make a really bizarre character, to have someone with just the most outrageous backstory ever. I started it off with an oldtime superhero kind of origin, radioactive waste. But you had spiders, you had ants, you had just about every animal. What was one that would really come left-field? Then I thought about a crab. A crab that just fell into some radioactive waste and turned into a human! After I made him I started thinking through his point of view, on how he has absolutely no clue how humans do thing, and that just spurred on his interactions with everyone kekek.

For unique characters in general I, uh... idk. KEK. A lot of it comes from the name. If I can find a name pun for them then I can find similar things that attribute to the name, like law with jaywalker, or a mysterious man whose real name is actually backwards, or a weeb named anime, or an upcoming character I'm trying not to spoil. Sometimes it's also the concept I think of, like what their main purpose is and some random tidbits they'd have. A lot of it also comes from when I present the ideas to a few friends and we all just start rapid-firing more ideas.

Tropes I hate: Big busty women with a LOT of confidence. And the lonely, oblivious person that's unaware of how fawned after they are by literally everyone.
It's just because my old RP partner did this. A. Lot. Those two were literally all her characters, and there's nothing more irritating than having to strip away your character's personality because you have to write paragraph after paragraph about how their forced love interest is so beautiful even though they "don't realize it". Or paragraphs about how my character is so damn lucky that this goddess of SEX is even BREATHING in his general direction. Not to mention 3/4 of those characters were incompatible with what my characters were attracted to but forced their way with them regardless of protests.
I despise these tropes, and you can definitely tell with a few characters' personalities/tidbits.

fizzelston

Yoo I need to ask you, man,

Why are all your ocs such precious and babes...

No for real, all your characters are unique and have their own unique set of treats and skills!? How do you do it? What drives you/inspires you to make such unique characters as Jey and a Shapeshifting crab!?

Bonus question: what are character tropes that you hate 👀??

YeS I LOVE ME SOME GOATS AND 'STACHES. I'm the goat mustache man.

I've always wanted to be a children book illustrator, so that's... The basics of my art style I think! I a 24 y/o still buys children books in the shops, just too look at the art and trying to figure out how they do it and how I can improve my own style!

I also look a lot on Pinterest too be honest! I always, loved, just loved expressive character designs/art where they use this hard weird shapes and soft coloring. Gosh darn it's something I really want to learn, but every time I use weird shapes it sticks out like a sore thumb tbh >:^(! I really need to practice more >:^(

I do! I've stared 3 years ago, but my 0.5 version of my story is/was pretty shitty and I had too scrap álot of it (see my rework oc folder shdh) to make it a clear and less stuffed up story. I started my first draft in January of this year and I'm +/- 50% through! I'm happy with where it's going, but I know I have to tinker with the first few chapters some more to make it even smoother. there are some big chunks of text I need to skimp, or add in the first half of my story but that's what's the first draft is for the right (HAha...ha.. Right.. I'm dying)

I've written a NaNoWriMo about "Ros backstory" some years ago but dear GOD that sucked. And like his entire backstory has changed ever since BUT...

Henlo there goat fizzle man. Do you LOVE mustache and goat??? ANYWAYS, moving on to the real question. What developed your artstyle and what inspired your characters? Your ocs and artstyle is such a fitting and unique combo so i'm pretty curious (im really sorry if this has been asked this before). And i've heard you are writting a novel! When did you start on it and are you content on where the story is going? Have you writted a novel or any kinds of literature before?

I guess it's save to say it is one of my favourite game in years. it just stands out from all of the games i've played. Story and mechanic-wise. Though i do wish there were more puzzles to solve as the gameplay was rather short :') I dont think i've ever taken any inspirations on it? Can't really think of any work inspired by it, neaither directly nor indirectly. Watson's design might be the closest oneshot inspired work haha.

Personally, it is a really serene theme that just makes my heart calm. My liking towards it just feels natural ahah. Same reasons with the colour blue. There's a strange calming feeling about it and i personally love the vibe it gives off. The mix of green, blue, and chocolate is, again, mesmerizing imo. Sure, the earth is toxicated by us filthy scrubbly humans, but it aint stopping me from appreciating the beauty of it. And yeah, i do have an interest in astronomy. Learning everything outside of world is really interesting :D

It has to be "Fly me to the moon" By Frank Sinatra. It's rather popular but hell, i love it!! Like Frank's songs are so damn good but this one just feels really special for me. But Mr. Blue and Please Mr. Postman are also one of my favs from that era! It's so hard to pick favs tbh ::')

YunaNoire

Swissy

First of all!! I love OneShot! It's such an underappreciated little gem honestly and it makes me happy to see others who love it! Would you say it's your favorite game? Have you taken any inspiration from it for your own work?

Why such a fascination with earth-themed characters? Is it generally the connection to blue you like the most? Or do you like blue so much because the earth is blue? I assume you have an interest in astronomy and planets in general, given your characters?

Also, what song from the 50s would you say is your favorite?

No worries, that's a stellar question!

I have a lot of favorite video games, so it'd be hard for me to pick a top ten, or even a top five. Persona, Fire Emblem and DanganRonpa are my favorite series overall though. I love them to bits personally and I just seem to consistently hyperfixate over them! I like all sorts of games, but it's usually games that have an effecting and compelling narrative that get to me most. Those three game series in particular have changed me in a lot of ways so that also contributes to why I adore them so much and why I adore a lot of the other games I do.

In terms of cartoons, if we're just talking western stuff, Steven Universe and Teen Titans are probable my overall favorites! In terms of anime, that's a whole different rabbit hole!

tvland

Yuna_Animatus Pardon my short question, but I saw on your profile that you like video games and cartoons! I was just wondering, what video game(s)/cartoons are your faves?
