Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 5 years, 11 months ago (Edited 4 months, 28 days ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

Sixbane Heya! I've notice and pointed out about you having lots of adoptables, do you usually buy them because of their design, or you're interested in developing them, or any other reasons? Any dream or fav type of character you owned?

Alternatively, what kind of closed species you're interested in and make you convinced to get them? I'm seeing a lot of ferals/anthros from your CS folder but I'm still curious on your specific interest!

--

LATE REPLY but hello! I don't like listing my interest for personal reasons but I'll admit that I'm not the best person to ask for movies or books rec because I just read whatever (either it's given to me for anything or I watch them with families). I guess my fav genre is just anything that focuses on daily life kind of setting? It doesn't have to be modern day setting, even daily life from past eras are also good! I'm just not that good at deciphering fantasy in written form and romance makes me.............ajhgdhafdhga embarassed.

Unfortunately I can't remember the last time I read a proper book that isn't in my native language (which I can't recommend for no English translations-) but I remember my all time fav being a children's book called Railway Children? I read that for a school assignment, but it's really good and fits within the genre I like!

Kogami Hi! You don't seem to have any preferences or interests on your profile, so I'm wondering: what's your favourite category of books? You can do movies as well if you aren't really a reader. Do you have any book/movie recommendations? I'm a bit of a bookworm myself and would love to hear what you have to say >w<

-

Ooh! Well, let's start with a book. I just finished reading The Final Six and it was a-maz-ing! I really loved it. I thought the ideas were super cool, and the execution was well done. Ender's Game was pretty good, and I'm also reading one right now called Satellite. So far it's pretty good, I'd just warn anyone who hates text talk, because the whole book is written that way. As for movies, I'm into the typical Star-Wars, but I really liked Star-Trek The Wrath of Khan. TV shows, I'm not too too big on them. But I really enjoyed The 100 a while back (I should probably get back into it), Stranger Things was fantastic though! If you haven't seen it, would 100% recommend, especially if you're into creepy monsters and exploring alternate dimensions.

evilfrog

shibeboi hello! you said you’re into sci-fi in your profile, whats some of you favorite sci-fi films/shows/etc. in general? I like sci-fi and enjoy getting inspiration from it

-

Oh, I think I must've took inspiration from the movie of the same name (even though I have never seen it, I just liked the name itself only) when it was first showing trailers, but just recently I found out it is actually two separate words and not just a conjoined one.

Inspiration for my ocs though- tbh I never really thought about it much! I probably just took inspiration from a bunch of shows from my childhood to now and kind of mushed them together until they come out looking like that. I've definitely been influenced by other artists in the past though, which probably shows as well. I guess it helps to admit I've always been a fan of super 'cartoony' designs and I just enjoy bright colors in general.

Suckerpunch

Heyo! First of all, what's the origin of your name? Did you take it from anywhere in particular or choose it for a specific reason?

Also, your characters are all very brightly coloured and cartoony! What would you say is your biggest inspiration when it comes to designing characters?

Well, I started writing because my dad is also a writer for one. I also just, really enjoyed writing from a young age. I'm not sure exactly why but writing class was always my favorite and I loved coming up with ideas in my head for stories and characters. I'd sometimes think of all sorts of story lines that i'd never really write down, even though I wanted to. Writing has just been a big part of my life since then, my relationship with role playing and story heavy games only encouraged that further!

I can't say for sure what the first thing I ever wrote was, probably something Sonic related since that was my big thing back in my childhood. My first big 'Project' of sorts was a silly thing I wrote called 'Time and Space Adventures'. Which was about as silly and anime as you could get, but writing that was what got me started.

My current projects are many and various lmao. I don't know which one i'm really focusing on right now, but my Jury of One Hundred storyline is what i'm wanting to finish the most. You can read more about it here!

I myself am trying to be an author (despite my many mistakes when it comes to grammar) and I get curious when people say that they are trying to be one as well. Why did you start writing? What was the first thing you have written? What is your current (or most recent) story/project?

~•~

Fiction Fantasy! Some times I do mystery (but that is so damn hard you have no idea- good mysteries are really hard.) I also do Realistic Fiction. Sometimes I’ll combine some genres (which is what I’m currently doing for Balancing Act.)

Oh wait that’s the next question- yeah I like to combine Fantasy and Sci-Fi, just because those are weird and can be hard to combine.

My ideal age group To write for? Pre-teens and teens as I understand what they would enjoy better, really.

I enjoyed looking through your characters and your projects! Your website's bio says you're seeking representation for your first novel: could you tell me a little about it? I'm especially curious about your planned series, Flightless. Did you always know you wanted it to be a series, or did the idea grow over time?

And are there any particular themes or messages that are important for you to explore or communicate in your work?

Good luck with your writing, and with finding representation!

I absolutely love your art style. Makes me happy every time i see it. What was your inspiration when you were younger and started drawing. I love how classic newspaper comic your style looks. Very unique against most of the styles now a days. What steps did you take developing it and what held your inspiration to keep with a more vintage classic style?

Thank you!! Actually, I think it's funny you mention a newspaper comic influence, because I don't think people often pick up on that. You're right, though! When I was a kid, the comics landscape was different: it was mostly just superhero floppies or newspaper funnies, and my big brothers would never let me read their dark and gritty superhero comics, so as a kid in love with the idea of telling stories with pictures, of course I gravitated to newspaper comics. I read whatever was in the local paper, and even if they weren't great, it was my life's ambition to be among them someday. Besides those, Archie was probably my biggest influence from back then, that and the great indie comics in Nickelodeon Magazine's comics section.

It was also the Saturday morning cartoons at the time that influenced me, all the ones with that semi-realistic style, stuff like X-men Evolution, The Zeta Project, Jackie Chan Adventures, Static Shock, and Spider-man Unlimited; and Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack) and Alex Toth (Superfriends, many others) are still two of my idols for character design and style (and just Hanna-Barbera cartoons in general).

My art didn't look then like it does now, though: when I was in grade school and middle school I had a long-running (cartoony) comic strip, and when I was older, my style was more realistic, but I guess you naturally gravitate back to your roots? I always come back to the newspaper-strip dot eyes, and it's been over 20 years since I started drawing those, haha. I have binders of xeroxes of Alex Toth character sheets and I love studying the economy and fluidity of his lines, and masters like Jiro Kuwata (8 Man, Bat-manga) and Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist). I'm not totally satisfied with my style yet, but that's always a work in progress.

Thanks so much for the question! It was interesting to think about: I hadn't thought about some of this in years.

So I live in a very mountain and foresty area for starters. My family and I went on annual camping trips as a kid. But as an adult I moved to the top of a mountain with my boyfriend at the time and we literally lived on 400+ acres with no neighbors. We would hike over night and build little camp fires and sleep on the clifs and mountain tops all the time in the summer. Now since I have moved, we live about 2 hours from the mountain ranges but we go all summer to rock climb and hike. Forests everywhere still so always Walking in parks and such.

Now abandoned buildings, that's something my mom was very in to actually. So as a kid when I got a bit older she would take me with her (high-school age). It was typically pretty dangerous. I developed the interest from short trips with my mom exploring for antiques and interesting stuff. My friends and I would go just to see places all the time after that.

One of the coolest places I have been was this one old house that was abandoned, mansion style. Belonged to this doctor that was illegally doing abortions out of the basement. He got arrested and it was kinda left abandoned before they tore it down in 2013. But I went there with my mom, boyfriend, and one other friend. It was unbelievablely freaky. Reminded me of silent hill mixed with the last of us completely. The floor was super rotted so you had to walk around the edge of the walls and be really careful where you stepped. Never made it down to the basement areas where the surgery took place (deep no stairs left and horribly unsafe)but through huge holes in the floor you could see old surgical tables and equipment. My favorite creepy memory from that building was this one children's nursery. The room had a rounded wall, and was all painted like vintage carousel horses peeling off of the walls in great big strips. It was just so surreal and looked like a video game scene. I could go on and on but I won't.

Scariest ever and the last time we ever did it. Mom and I were driving on back roads and found this old farm house falling over and rotting and it was so freaky and we wanted to take a look. We parked and walked inside and it smelled of death really bad, like worse than I have ever experienced. So we thought some big animal died or something. But once we made our way to the kitchen and back side. There were stacks of dead animals.... I mean HUGE piles....just collected everywhere. And we saw a mattress and some stuff laying in one of the rooms. So obviously someone collecting roadkill or something lived there. But like it was a rotting down house so absolutely scary. We bolted from that place immediately. That was 2016. Haven't been exploring since then... Not fear at this point just mostly being so dang busy and lacking a crew to explore with since I moved.

SO yeah abandoned place exploring is amazing and a total experience but is also super dangerous. I'd never recommend it really xD it's a do at your own risk. If it's something you want to try or get in to... Absolutely never go alone and inform people when you go, so if you get injured or lost someone can come looking for you. Also be aware many times I have come accross homeless people or drug addicted individuals hiding in places. It can be insanely dangerous. Even things like bee hives or animals living places can be super dangerous too. So it's never really safe. But dang is it a cool experience.

u say ur into sci-fi in regards to books, but as well as what ur fave sci-fi book is, do u have any fave sci-fi movies? sci-fi covers a fair range of genres within it, so do u have any preferences to what kinda sci-fi u enjoy the most? also - does sci-fi influence ur stories and OCs?

i found out abt HS back when i was around 13ish? like 2012 i suppose! my two best friends talked abt it a lot (which i thought was funny bc they didn't know each other and lived like 3hrs apart so coincidental? idk) so i thought i'd check it out - tho my interest in it didn't last too long (ok, a few years but not long compared to most ppl) and i kinda stopped having anything to do w/ it around like... 2015/16ish? bc i lost interest! believe it or not i don't rly care for it much anymore :0 i still rly like fantrolls A LOT tho (i may be as bold as to say they're one of my fave things) hence why i have so many 😅 insert that marge 'i just think they're neat' meme here
in saying that, nah - i never got into hiveswap bc when all the hype for it was going around/when it was released i'd completely lost interest in HS at that point and couldn't rly care less honestly - i haven't even looked at it to this day
all i know abt it is that not vriska meme but i think that's actually from friendsim? idk it's all the same to me lmao

DON'T GET ME STARTED ON MY BETTAS OMG I COULD RAMBLE FOREVER
i currently only have two atm - being daisy (a wild type female, possibly betta simplex), and peaches (my betta splendens female)! after my last boy phoenicis passed away not long ago i decided to try smthn new instead of getting a new betta, so i got guppies!
my tanks... hm... ok for the big ones i EVENTUALLY wanna have a desert oasis and dense jungle theme, but i'm tryin to work w/ what decorations i have (it's getting there slowly tho) - i rly love buying silk plants and filling the tanks w/ them tho bc they're cool af (expensive tho oof 😥 i swear these fish drain my wallet--)
i took some pics of them so u can have a visual bc i'm rly bad at explaining detail stuff haha (sorry the quality is bad - the lighting is terrible here atm)

and some stories from bettas past and present (some pics here too!):

- phe used to ALWAYS go into his jellyfish like... he'd be in there 80% of the time and if he had trouble getting in he'd chuck a hissy fit and attack the tentacles before trying again

tumblr_p9b448JC0J1wnmbcco6_1280.jpg

- i picked sammy up from the pet store w/ SBD, so he couldn't swim (his method of transport was slithering around the bottom of the tank like a snake) - he also couldn't flare either and his version of flaring (instead of puffing out ALL his fins and beard) was to simply lift his top fin up and hope u knew he was mad - also a bonus photo of when he was 'climbing' the stairs of his decoration and slipped and fell all the way back down

tumblr_oxmp7mWrpR1wcvutqo1_1280.jpgtumblr_oxmp7mWrpR1wcvutqo2_1280.jpg

- sammy was also the most special to me bc he was my first betta... i'm even considering getting a tattoo of him bc he meant the world to me (and still does) even tho he had a condition that made him useless in all things fish and a torn up tail from how he moved around i still think he was handsome ;;w;;
despite his SBD as well, he held his own p damn well. disability who???? he knew how to get around and it didn't seem to trouble him in the slightest

- phe was a dumb idiot who always flared at his reflection or if he managed to catch a glimpse of one of the bettas in a different tank - but other than that u'd think he wasn't a betta bc of how ... polite? he was? can u even describe a fish w/ the word 'polite'? he was v well behaved and also could be handfed

- peaches is the most attentive betta i've ever met? she will just.. watch u... for hours? her tank is positioned so she can see all around from all four sides of the tank so if we're doing the dishes? she'll watch rly closely
if we're watching TV or playing ps4? she'll watch too
just the other day my bf flopped onto the floor and she dove down to the very bottom corner of the tank to watch him as though she was like 'wtf are u doing down there'
it got to the point where i put one of the betta hammock leaves in her tank so that she could sit on it and watch TV so doesn't tire herself out - she makes regular use of it
the only time she swims around the tank like a normal fish is if she hasn't noticed ur in the room yet, bc once she sees u she will not let her gaze wander and will insist on following u around (or following u as much as she can in her tank)

- atticus was rly small when we got him but just... kept... growing... HE WAS HUGE! and he wasn't a king betta or anything, so the fact he got so big was honestly a surprise - he was almost two times the size of our other adult bettas before he eventually passed from old age

- not rly a story but i got this pic of tethys yawning and it's so important that i'm not even gonna put it in a spoiler (also when we bought him he looked AWFUL but he went from white to a rly pretty blue/purple colour and got super healthy ;;w;; his fins never uncurled tho so it earned him the nickname 'curly boy')

tumblr_oroffvM8x71wnmbcco1_1280.jpg

i'd honestly give more and more stories (ik some of these weren't rly but listen) but it'd turn this into a 3000 word essay 😭

firebuug

I see you really like Homestuck and I’m curious, when and where did you first find out about it? cause it tends to vary a lot from person to person. Also, did you play that hiveswap game (I’m not rlly versed in any of it so sorry if i get any terms wrong ahshsjd) and if so, does it inspire you to make more OC’s?? :3 And your bettas!!! Pls do tell me more, how is your tank for them like in terms of decorations n stuffs? :0c Any stories to share about them?

Sorry if this is a lot I go hog wild at question games—

1. A bogon (according to catb.org) is the quantum particle representing bogosity, the universal quantity of corruption, obliviousness, and obnoxiousness people in power are radiating at any given time. I asked a programmer friend for simple dA username suggestions, and it was the first thing that popped into his head.
2. It is too greasy. The worst feeling (in my opinion) is biting into food and having nearly a teaspoonful of oil burst into my mouth.

Alexg47

bogonvogon That's a... very unique username you've got there, how did you come up with it? (also how the heck do you not like pizza???)

"Since you're really into personifying countries, I'd like to ask which one's your favorite? In terms of real countries and not the characters you made :D" Is it cheating to say my own (the UK)? Because I have way too many biases and I'd be here for ages trying to explain them all.

"And while personifying a country, have you learned anything particularly surprising or interesting about a certain country?" Well even though I don't have her on TH I found out that Estonia has the highest ratio of women to men in the world at 1:0.84.

Yes it is haha I was blessed to get art from them ;V; their pixels are really good so I def understand! Thanks for liking my art! I started getting into art when I was younger, my dad was really good at drawing so watching him draw everyday inspired me to get into art. As for writing, I'm fairly new to it actually (well, fictional writing at least, I do lots of academic writing haha)! I think I really got into writing when I started Neverland. I had to write for characters I used to own before but only now did I really start getting invested in it. I think it's because I really like creepy characters and dark themes? Writing crazy characters and characters who lack morals are fun!

The summary of Neverland is that the world is full of inhabitants who aren't exactly what you'd call normal, most of the creatures who live in the land are either crazy or unstable in a way. And one day, Daemon, was suddenly put into this world. In the story, he tries to find a way back to Earth, and along the way, he meets a whole bunch of crazy characters. ' v' Ah, I've been working on this story for around 6 months now. I'm not exactly good at writing and I've been quite busy so I've been really slow with getting all the info written ahaha. I'll get it done someday! I've also been waiting to get some character designs done before I actually write everything out though. Looking at designs help me out a lot when writing!

As for what made me like creating, I think I've always been a creative child since I was young, so I guess it was only natural for me to like creating? Drawing and writing for my characters have been extremely fun :)

Swissy

Hanae Is that 886v's art i saw???   Sorry, sorry, got distracted for awhile ahah He is one of my fav artist and inspo  -That aside, how did you get into writting and art? What made you like creating? :0  (Your art is beautiful by the way!). World related, I'm personally interested in Neverland's somewhat creepy n intriguing setting.  long have you been working on Neverland? And what kind of story is it?

It started from me creating a single character. I didn't intend them to be planet characters so it was just a thought because most of them resembles a planet in someway lol. Anyways, Mr. BlueSky, an old name of his which originated from my fav song, started it all. He was a stand alone character at first. Until i created Mars and Venus (which is a coincidence since they really do resembles their respective planet) so hey, why dont i make a story about em? Overtime, my interest in astronomy and astrophysics grew. I researched many celestials object and astronomical events to fuel my guilty pleasure. I've always loved to learn about the world out there. And making OCs from planet is jist a guilty pleasure ahah
