Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 5 years, 11 months ago (Edited 5 months, 11 hours ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

circlejourney We meet again! >:3c

When it comes to characters, do you have any you prefer to draw over writing about them, and vice versa? What kind of character types are your favourites, and do you think you have a lot of characters who fall under that type? Also, on a totally different topic, how did your musical journey start? Did you study music in any way (schools are hobby groups) or are you entirely self taught?

So why do you like vintage manga so much?

It has a LOT to do with the art! Creators like Keiko Takemiya, Moto Hagio and Yoshimi Uchida in particular are huge art inspirations to me and their compositions and attention to detail are stunning! There are also a lot of themes and aesthetic I enjoy in them because they borrow a lot from classic western literature which also happens to be my jam. And then there is the fact I just feel sort of better when I see all these ridiculously pretty and androgynous looking guys because I'm not above wanting to "see myself" in fiction, and it's the reason I like classical art too!! So many Beautiful Men that make me feel less like a freak lol

Also I see Hamlet in your book recommendations, what do you like most about it, and what's your favourite Shakespeare play other than that one?

It might be an unpopular opinion but I like Hamlet for the ridiculousness of it, like to me it's more of a tragicomedy than just a tragedy because come on, pirates?? Hamlet making up this ridiculously elaborate play to make sure the ghost is not lying and his uncle is the killer? Hamlet's friends trying to lure him into a death trap only to get roasted and also killed in the end? It's just So Much and I can't see it just as a dramatic tragic story when my man Shakespeare is pulling up these ridiculous plot elements

I haven't read all of Shakespeare's plays but I do remember really loving  As You Like It and actually named my character Rosalind after the main character haha

t-t-thank u... ;__;

The biggest influence in my art style is probably Disgaea and Puyo Puyo, since I started liking half anime half western cartoon art styles because of those games haha

If we all lived in a world where sharkpups existed would you adopt one? And what would you pick?

My favorite bug used to be moths but due to an infestation I have right now I'm not really liking them at the moment. :P

I don't really remember what inspired it. Maybe it had to do with bee movie and buck bumble memes. I have more bug ocs but their designs aren't done yet.

Since you have a handful of insect OCs, I've gotta ask what your favourite bug is? Also what inspired and/or made you decide to make insect OCs?

Thank you for the questions~ To sum up living in a desert, it's hot, dry, and at times eerily quiet. There's times where the wind and insects suddenly go quiet and all I can hear are my foot steps.

Do you think there are things people often forget when they write about deserts, and is there something you wish more people would know about?

I feel like people often forget how variant deserts are in terms of appearance. Not all of them a flat lands filled with nothing but sand or only have flora of just a few shrubs and cacti. While I have been in practically barren deserts, this nightmare to drive through ,the one I spend the most time in is filled with short gnarled trees, shrubs, grass, and small flowering plants.  The terrain, while sandy is extremely hilly and filled with sudden cliffs.  Also, sand colour is super variant in deserts. Where I went camping this weekend had pale pink, pale orange, and pale green sand due to eroding cliffs nearby.
As for what I wish more people knew about is how diverse the animals and plants are. It always makes me a little disappointed when all I see brought up is rattlesnakes and cacti. Also biting flies are a constant annoyance. They are like mosquitoes except more persistent.

Also, which one of your OCs have you been thinking about the most during this week?

Radio stations won't stop advertising the anniversary of the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad so it's been mostly my OCs who live or lived in the "Wild West". (Benji, Holden, Rory, Vincent, and Jeb)

Caine

TenMomentsTill Since I'm from Finland myself and honestly never see a desert in real life, I'm super curious to know what it's like to live there! Do you think there are things people often forget when they write about deserts, and is there something you wish more people would know about?

I've noticed that you seem to make quite a lot of adoptables, and was wondering where you get the ideas/inspiration for them?

They come to me sort of like OCs generally do - I have a basic theme (like a goat) and then just start working on it and let my Whims decide what the outcome will be. Some adopts come to me easier than the others but I try to keep a certain kind of core "vibe" to them while working, even if it end up changing as I do work haha.

Also, what do you do with adoptables that don't end up selling (if any)?

I usually keep them! I try to make adopts so that if nobody buys them, I love them so much I'm more than happy to keep them to myself! That being said, when I'm in an actual need of money I just let them rot there until someone buys them or I feel pity for them and adopt them myself. That, or I hold a raffle or some DTA event to increase my visibility since people Love free stuff.

Also, completely random question: what's your favourite animal?

I have always been partial to lions! But also I'm currently completely obsessed with ferrets haha

It's kind of impossible for me to pick a favourite or least favourite food because there are so many to choose from, but I really hate rice pudding. Something about the texture (more than the taste) is really unpleasant to me.

What’s your least favorite thing to eat?

I see on your profile that you like psychology-- As a psych major myself, I'm curious what about it sparks your interest? Is there a particular subject or study that you like? :>

Oh gosh, I like almost all genres of music! I grew up in a household that had very diverse taste, so I can enjoy oldies from the 50's and every era after that, all the way through to today's music. My spotify playlist typically has more 90's and 00's-- But I guess if I had to define specifically what I prefer to listen to, it would be Pop, Pop Rock, House, and R&B :>

My favorite character! AaaaAA that gets tougher every time. Lately I've been pampering Reno a lot because he feels a lot more natural to write and draw. I usually end up making really sweet guys who're easier to love, but he's real with himself and minds his own business and gets pissed off just like anyone else, and it's kind of theraputic?? I don't know how he comes across to anyone else, but he's my "Sorry I was late, I didn't want to come." character and I'm proud of him.

I saw it mentioned that you like music; what kinds of music do you enjoy, if you don't mind saying?

Also, bonus question: which of your own characters is your favourite or is most important to you?

Where do you get inspiration for your writing / what inspired your stories? Are they stories you would ever want to turn into published novels?

I get my story ideas from a ton of different places! Lots of my stories are inspired by other books. To reference the ones I've listed on my profile: Vincent was loosely inspired by a book called The Last Black Cat by Eugene Trivizas, and Vampire Hunters was loosely inspired by the Hollows series by Kim Harrison. I also sometimes draw inspiration from real-life events, or I go walking and see things that give me ideas for stories. Some of them were even inspired by videogames. Some of them come purely from my own twisted imagination.

I'm quite interested in turning some of my stories into published books someday, but right now I'm not really satisfied with any of my longer stories/novels. (I'm pretty bad at writing novels.) So maybe it'll come up in the future, but for now I'm content to just post my stories online. If people are interested enough to read them, then that's great.

A bonus: where does your love for dragons and vampires come from, if the interest has any particular source?

It's a boring answer, but I'm not really sure for either of them. I used to be more obsessed with dinosaurs when I was younger and the interest in dragons only developed later on, but I can't remember when or why.

I've read a few really good vampire novels that might have inspired me to like vampires (NOT Twilight...), but other than that, I'm not sure why I started liking them!

Thanks for the questions. :)
