Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 5 years, 10 months ago (Edited 4 months, 9 days ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

123penguin64 u say u have three serieses going on, which one was the first one u started and what kind of characters of urs fit each series (by that i mean do u have specific themes/personalities/looks for characters depending on the series or do u just kinda do whatever :0?)?

---

aaa i love pokemon so much ;;w;; my first game was actually the first pokemon ranger! tho my first like... actual pokemon game was platinum so i'm definitely a sinnoh stan bc of that haha - it's my fave game too even tho i never got to experience going underground until diamond bc it always made my platinum crash for some reason (omega ruby is another favourite of mine i really loved that and i loved reliving my GBA sapphire game in the remake (even if it was ruby instead of sapphire, same thing really)

my fave pokemon is definitely joltik - tho popplio and heatran come not far after that! i'm not sure why i have a soft spot for heatran of all pokemon (especially bc a lot of ppl forget it exists at times) but i got pretty attached to the first one i ever caught for some reason and i love it! big lava bean
as for human characters i have a thing for green haired ones? like wally, aaron, drew, and N! i also rly like gladion too but wally is the ultimate favourite he's adorable and i feel like i need to protect him despite him being fictional

and as for what i enjoy... i suppose everything? i love the games, i love the series...es..., i love collecting cards (i'm not familiar w/ playing them tho, i just like looking at them bc they're pretty), and i love the pokemon themselves and the lore and how stats work and movesets and... everything! pokemon makes up my biggest collection by far and i've owned most games (tho i've lost a lot over time so i don't have many now), i've got a decent amount of figures, over 60 plushies, four binders worth of cards, and just a bunch of other random merch from mugs to books so it's safe to say i love it a lot 😂

besides spyro i suppose, pokemon's one of the only things that i've ever really been invested in and that makes it pretty special to me bc my interests change like seasons do and i can never seem to stay into one thing but it's wild to think i've liked pokemon for over half my life (only... 10 years so it sounds a bit exaggerated but it's the truth lmao) compared to other stuff i've given up on after like... a year

adjlaskjdk sorry i rambled but yeah i just rly love pokemon so thankyou for the question ;;w;;

I see the word "Pokémon" in your profile then I have to go for this, ahah. Just tell me about your liking for Pokémon! Which game was your first one? Which one is your favourite? Who are your favourite Pokémons? What do you enjoy about Pokémon (games, shows, cards, roleplay, lore?)

How did you develop your interest in science?

I always had an interest in science, even as a young kid. I would watch lots of documentaries (there was a science show targeted at young kids, it was really good) and read science magazines (the "junior" version of some popular science magazine). My parents would bring me to museums and parks, and share their knowledge with me (my dad was into astronomy, history and geology). I wanted to become either a palaeontologist, a biologist or an astronomer.  My liking for sciences would only get stronger when I  grew up.

Do you currently study or work in a science field, or do you want to?
I'm now studying biology at the university, hoping to become a research worker, preferably in the domain of embryonic development, stem cells, genetics, etc.

What's your rubber ducky collection like?
Awesome. My collection is like, awesome :D
Last time I counted, I had around 400 ducks, but it was years ago, and I haven't counted since. As I left my mom's house and moved into a smaller apartment, I couldn't display them all, then I only kept the prettier ones. I got lots of interesting and special ducks, they all are so different. There's the patterned ones (hearts, geometric figures, smileys, paint blotches.....), the cosplayed ones (biker, policeduck, vampire, robot, astronaut, batman.....), the "travel souvenirs" (Liberty Statue, flag-coloured, British guard......)...... They're all different, I'm not hoarding the basic yellow ones.
Beside the rubber duckies, there's the big ceramic ones, the small cristal ones, the lucky charms, tin money boxes, colourful night-lights, a garland, rings, earings, underpants, a wall picture, two bathmats, a sin plug, brushes, a sponge holder, a cushion, a music-speaker.... like, everything in my flat is a ducky xD
Aaaand of course I also hoard psyduck stuff, would they count ?

And, haha, what's your rubber ducky collection like? How many do you have, and do you have any cool or interesting ones? I only have a little astronaut one, but I know there are so many variants out there!

I'm really interested in Catband! Where did you get the inspiration from it, is it from music in general or is it something more specific?

Thank you for asking! The whole idea for the comic started when I was in high school, doodling lots of Roadie and his friend Silver and other miscellaneous musicians (I've joked that the comic is half just an excuse to get to draw all the guitars I want and that's... probably less of a joke and more just true, haha-- probably obvious but I love bands and musicians and drawing them a lot), and I thought of actually doing something with all that drive. Jill and Amber and some other characters in their lives had already existed from a story I'd written a few years previous about their lives, and I'd once written an faux introduction for speech class for Jill, the famous rock star-- so when I was thinking of making a comic about a band competition, it only made sense that it should be the story of these bands' early days. (The speech isn't canon/a spoiler, by the way.)

Originally the concept for Catband was that it would be an American Idol parody, but it really was always more than that, a story I'd use to explore and satirize the themes and issues I cared about, especially concerning my hometown, New York City. My specific focus has shifted over time (taking so much time off from the comic actually helped, because the story is still set in 2007, but with the gift of distance I can see more clearly what the story should be "about"), but it's still a story at its heart about the people of this city, the power they have together, and the things that matter. So to answer your question... my city inspires me, the people and places and events that happen in it. A big theme in the comic is about the places that are important to people and why they are, so the story is full of real life places that are gone now in the year 2018, and little special things you wouldn't see in a movie or on TV, the stuff that gives a city its soul.

None of that sounds like it's about music, does it? (It is, I promise.) I'm also a concert rat, or whatever you want to call that-- there was a time I went to 90 shows a year, outdoor free shows knee deep in mud, secret shows, shows at DIY venues with a pee bucket, shows in abandoned swimming pools and bowling alleys, hockey arenas and baseball stadiums alike. I'm not a musician myself, but the local music scene is what I know, so it's a story about that and what makes it special, about struggling musicians and desperate young people, crummy venues and crazy stories.

I could keep going, but I'll spare you-- but basically everything in Catband is based in reality. The freak show, the art studio, the artists' squat, the concert venue: all of them are inspired by real people, people whose stories I thought deserved to be told in some way.

I'm not sure why the first version of it was canceled, is it alright if I ask why? You don't have to answer that if you don't want  to!

It's no secret why I stopped doing the first run of the comic and I don't mind answering that at all! It was the first serious comic I did, so it was a lot of things that killed it, many of them the usual reasons: my health was getting bad, I was taking forever in between pages, the pages had become wildly inconsistent (the earliest pages were digital and with varying page sizes, the later pages consistent in size but hand-inked and colored in copic markers), and I didn't like some corners I'd written myself into with the writing. The first run of the comic was extremely valuable as a learning experience, and I still like some things about it, but I didn't want to keep soldiering on with something that had so many problems, and I loved the story enough that I wanted to come back to it when I could do it better. The comic I'll make now will be unrecognizable from that one, probably-- the main character from that version isn't even in the new version, and the story is so much better for it. I know the frustration of seeing creators you like reboot or redraw their works, but trust me, in this case, it's what needed to happen.

Sorry for such a long and rambly reply, but thank you for asking those questions! It was fun to think back on this stuff.

Sorry for the late-ish repsonse, but I’ve been listening to a lot of ZUN’s music (i mean 2hu music is just hhhhh-)

And I’ve also been listening to a lot of Touhou arrangements, for wome reason i’m mainly leaning towards the insturmental/orchestral arrangements though haha

I haven’t been listening to like, any bands for god-knows-how-long, but I’ve been listening to one person’s music for a while plus areangements of his music, so i hope that answers your question!

Are there any songs or a specific group that you found recently and you've really been stuck on their music for awhile? i recently found the group frederic and i love them to death but im always up for listening to knew things yknow!

Ah, I love seeing your characters! Out of all of them, which one would you say is your very top, number one? How long have you had that character? And what is it about them you love so much?

PicklePantry HKDSF Thank you sm!!! <33333 ;w;;; i love your characters!
I gotta say that Theo is my number one....my entire cinnamon apple i would die for him....but i also love making him suffer hfdks
I've only had him since early 2016 but i think i got super attached to him since the story surrounding him and the world he comes from is one of the first thing im like wholeheartedly dedicating myself to work on and explore (and he actually first came to me in a dream with a few other characters so it might also be that!) He's a little stereotypical with being somewhat of a cowardly main but i just love him to death.

I just get really excited because i want to share everything about him, but majority of it is spoilers for future plans with his character and i really wish i could tell people!! Like how his design will be in the future, or how his relationships will be, family history and powers... i get really giddy thinking about it? And in turn whenever i think about him, i feel more motivated to actually work on my comic ^^

Oh heckin bless!
A lot of my characters, like Dudley or Father Priest, came from spur of the moment ideas. I would have this one thought (Dudley - What's the wildest backstory I could come up with? // FP - What if there was a priest with BOTH of those names?) and ran with it. Most of these were from talking with other people and getting the ideas the more I talked to them about it.
Some other characters, like Ark or Lan, were thought up long, long ago, with heavy influence from video games (mainly Zelda games). As I grew older, I developed them more and thought more about their worlds.

And that's not fair you can't jusT ASK WHICH ONE'S MY FAVORITE I LOVE ALL OF THEM AAA

Gosh, though... I guess from my absolute top I'd have to say Smiley? He was a huge turning point for me. He was the character that got me to Toyhouse, and his interactions with people made me way more confident and social. Plus, I'm incredibly proud of his design, and I'm so happy that people like either talking to him, reading about him, or drawing him. He's really opened up a lot of doors for me- even to this day! I just submitted my first serious story involving him!

xxoldxx

PicklePantry I love your characters <3. How do you come up with ideas for them, and wich ones are your absolute favorites?

I LOVE harry potter. According to the Pottermore tests, my Hogwarts house is Gryffindor and my Ilvermorny house is Wampus, although I've always felt more like a Slytherin or a Ravenclaw. Also according to Pottermore, my patronus is a mole. As for my favorite book, is kind of hard to say, but probably the goblet of fire or the prisoner of azkaban. I don't have any strong favorites movie-wise. My absolutely favorite charactes would be Lupin and Luna. As for horror, I'm currently reading "The shadow out of time" by H.P. Lovecraft, which I'm enjoying, and I've also recently watched The Babadook (although I'm not sure what exact genre it falls into), and I kind of enjoyed it, though its definitively not for everyone due to its very slow pacing. I need to get back to reading more horror (I usually don't watch horror movies since most of them suck)

AlleycatIrony

@renhiac oh ur a harry potter fan! what house are u in, what's ur patronus (if u know), what's ur fave book, fave movie, and fave character? u also say u like horror so what kinda horrors have u read or watched lately? any good ones?

ngl my style kinda just developed w/o me even realising it did! i made a little timeline thing on how my style kinda did develop over a few years if it helps to show how it did bc i'm not too good at explaining that kinda thing ;w;
i had a lot of trouble w/ my art and only recently this year have i actually started to like it - that's right, it took me over five years to be happy w/ my art style starting from 2012 (even now i don't like it, but i hate it a lot less than i used to), which is why there's a lot of art on this timeline (a lot isn't dated, i don't know dates of art but i do know what order i drew them in tho)

timeline_by_alleycatirony-dcbhynt.png

as for artists that inspire me, here's a list w/ what they inspire me w/ in brackets:
irl friends: matticus (expressions, simplified cartoony looks, drawing quickly), ghoullist (bold looks, chibis, small anatomy things, lineart), aien (anatomy all the way baby, realism)
others: dreameleon (detail, pointy lines), ilee-font (sketchy crayon-like look? idk i just love it), sugarandmemories (i love the simplicity - if it's not obvious by now i wanna be able to do simple art)

FellowPigeon

AlleycatIrony I hope this isn't a boring question but do did you develop your art style, it's so different from what you commonly see! Have certain artists influenced your work and if so in what ways.

What podcasts do you listen to? What are your favorites? How did you get into listening to them? :o

Gosh, I'll probably ramble a bit but I'll do my best haha. Most of the time I listen to audio dramas but just recently I've started listening to more non fiction podcasts too like Oh No Ross and Carrie, Fictional, Sawbones, MBMBAM, Dear Hank and John, Spirits and Still Buffering. In terms of audio dramas I listen to, there's The Bright Sessions, Wolf 359 ( both of which I'm pretty far behind in) Marscorp, Ark City, Death at a Low Price, The Black Tapes, Victoriocity, The Thrilling Adventure Hour, LifeAfter, Under Pressure and Greater Boston.

My favourite audiodramas have to be

Wooden Overcoats - A comedy about two rival undertakers fighting a (very one sided battle) for business on the fictional channel island of Piffling Vale. The characters are fun and memorable and all of the voice actors are so good. Also it is narrated by a mouse named Madeline and what more could you want really.

Our Fair City- This one probably ties with Wooden Overcoats for my favourite comedy audio drama. It's a really fun refreshing take on the post-apocalypse genre 'Following a climate-change-related disaster, humanity is now confined to subterranean cities. HartLife, an insurance company, now runs the lives of all "policies" in the city. Lightning rigs high above the city gather energy from thunderstorms, mad scientists walk the earth, and adorably monstrous Molepeople dig tunnels deep underground to expand the city's habitable space.'

and The Orbiting Human Circus (of the Air) - This one is quite hard to describe but the basic plot follows the janitor for the wildly popular, bizarrely impossible radio show, broadcast from the top of the Eiffel tower. The show is surreal and filled with beautiful music and has a cool  feel to it. I particularly love the show because I grew up listening to a lot of Story Time tapes and I have super fond memories them and somehow OHC manages to capture the same sort of feeling as listening to those.

Also I thought I should also mention The Adventure Zone, though it's not actually an audiodrama but it still tells a story. The characters are just iconic and there are too many great moments to count.

My favourite non fiction podcast at the moment has to be Oh No Lit Class (not to be confused with Oh No Ross and Carrie, they are made by different people) where hosts Megan and RJ revisit books everyone is supposed to have read but probably didn't with bad plot summaries, terrible impressions and even worse jokes. The show is hilarious and stupid but you actually finish each episode having learned a lot!

As for how I got into podcasts, it's pretty similar to how most people who listen to audiodramas got interested. About 2 or 3 years back I keep on hearing about a show called Welcome to Night Vale and became intrigued and started listening. Only to end up binge listening the whole series. It made me curious to find out about other audiodramas, especially since I have hour long bus ride every day and podcasts are a really good way of keeping myself entertained. And so it kind just grew from there. While I haven't been listening to much WTNV lately, I still look at it super fondly and went to both of the live shows they did here in NZ

What podcasts do you listen to? What are your favorites? How did you get into listening to them? :o

Pffft i'll try my best! I'll talk about the project i've been working at the longest, Jury of One Hundred!

Basically, this started off a long time ago as my own DanganRonpa fan story and was completely tied to that universe. All of the characters were of highschool age and at the time, that really didn't mesh with the direction I wanted to take it? As more time passed I realised that it was kind of growing out of that DanganRonpa mould and it just needed to become it's own thing! So I started reworking everything into more or less the state it's at now. I wanted to pay homage to DanganRonpa and Zero Escape, two series that have really influenced me and my writing, so it involves a lot of elements from those two series.

The basic premise is that every year, a secret organisation known as 'Baphomet's Chosen', who seek to one day take over the world and create a society that is ultimately more 'fair' and 'just', hold 'The Jury Trials'. In these trials, people from the world's population are randomly abducted and held in a facility, where they must endure a set of trials. At the end of it all, they'll be asked whether they want to join the organisation or not.

Part 1 starts on the year of the 100th Jury Trial and the protagonist, a secretary named Lizzie Belle, is kidnapped and brought to a mountain facility, where she is held with a number of other people.

The format I originally had was that it'd play out very much like DanganRonpa, where someone is killed, an investigation takes place and then a trial is held. But after a while I realized that I hadn't really moved away from it being a DR fanstory in that case, so i'm working on a new format for the Jury Trials at the moment and i'm thinning out the cast from 16 to a smaller number, so it doesn't feel too crowded and each character maybe gets a bit more development.

I'm planning on having it run for three parts, with each part having a new protagonist in a new set of trials, with part 3 wrapping everything up!

I've been working on it for a long, long time now and it's something I really want to show to the world one day. I'm not saying it's going to be the best thing ever, but I want it to be the best it can be before letting people read it!

Hopefully that gives you enough of an insight into one of my projects!

As for your other question, it sometimes does happen? I guess I just, ignore people who approach my characters in a way I don't like. I don't really want to cause or kick up a fuss, so I just kind of leave them hanging lmao.

Caine

@yuna_animatus You mention you have a lot of projects but too many to talk about, but could you maybe talk about one of them? I'm really interested to learn at least about one of them!! ; v ;

Also you don't need to answer this one if it's too personal/uncomfortable but since you have a lot of adult oriented characters, have you ever ran into any sort of trouble with that or had to tolerate uncomfortable people? And if yes, how do you usually deal with that sort of unwanted attention?

I'm hardcore into 70s shoujo manga and my friends know it, and back in late 2016 my friend Fiend once jokingly suggested me "imagine an RPGmaker game but with 70s shoujo manga graphics" and I loved that unorthodox joke idea so much I wanted to actually make it real! Except RPGmaker is still difficult for me so I wanted to try a visual novel instead! It was supposed to be a really elaborate joke game for april fools and just be as stereotypically 70s shoujo as just humanly possible, and that's why Claude and Jonathan in particular have this super generic "mysterious blond boy and practical brown haired boy" dynamics going on (it's super common in a LOT of manga and anime even nowadays)

But then I got really attached to my unholy creations and after a while it was no longer a joke or a parody but a work with its own actual plot and happenings separated from its inspirations. Here is also a copypasted inspiration explanation from my dev blog:

This was supposed to be kind of a joke referencing especially The Heart of Thomas and Kaze to ki no Uta, but I feel like even more I have been influenced by the 70s gore manga Devilman, which honestly might sound odd but that’s just how things are. Other notable works are probably November Gymnasium, Empire of Corpses, Romeo no Aoi Sora, Poe no Ichizoku (it has a really great boarding school arc) and Rose of Versailles.

I was mostly fascinated by the all-male boarding school aspect really visible in almost all the works mentioned there. Also, you can definitely see a pattern of “mysterious blond and practical brunette” in literally ALL of the things I listed there and I absolutely live for that aesthetic (and wanted to make my own as a joke, but just look how well that actually went).

Like I mentioned earlier a lot of the things come from my own school times as well, and I really wanted to somehow implement this kind of Nordic eerie feeling to it.

I was also super inspired by Finnish schlager music please don’t look at me I don’t understand it either but that’s my jam.

So yeah it's clear what Sinfonia was inspired by and I'm not going to even deny it because that'd be just silly, but I feel like despite the visual aesthetics of the work I have made it "my own" and just absolutely tarnished the pretty boy aesthetic with like a bunch of really snotty teenage boys directly inspired from the shenanigans of my time when I was their age.

omg your designs are so cool and art style is so unique! How do you come up with the ideas for your oc's and what inspires their designs?

oh well i even dunno? xD I've always been interested in all those fantasy things and loved cuties-patooties with wings and horns? xD And as for Heaven's Court, I'm not quite sure how it appeared myself, but Umineko played a big role in it for sure~  Thanks for asking dear <3

hedgemaze

Rorichi

I was wondering if anything in particular inspired your interest in angels and demons, and especially what may have inspired the Heaven's Court? (I'm hoping I haven't asked you something like that before? it's 4:30am and I'm second-guessing myself, haha)

Hey hedgemaze! it's cool that every time I hear you talk about catband I learn something new about it. Making use of this opportunity to ask you a question out of the blue without the awkwardness involved, what are your favourite things about being on Toyhouse and how has it impacted your project? You've started a lot of neat threads (including this one) so I was wondering what aspects of threads like these and the ensuing interactions you enjoy the most?

Hey circ! : p I'm sure you already know some of this, but I'll start at the beginning-- Catband was kind of in limbo until waf's OC wrestling AU last year gave me a reason to make new refs for the main characters, then Artfight inspired me to redesign the secondary characters, and since I've gotten active on Toyhouse in January, it's given me free reign to flesh out the cast with everyone else.

So even though I was always planning the reboot, I kind of fell ass-backward into actually doing it! Just being able to organize the characters' art and profiles has helped me a lot because I'm a visual person and better at having things laid out in front of me than just nebulously existing in docs, but more importantly, being a part of the Toyhouse community (and with the Root crew haha) has done so much for me, because I had all these (many...) characters in my head for years, but it's so easy to doubt yourself like that, to think that nobody would ever care about your characters and maybe your story isn't any good, and wonder whether or not it's even worth wasting your time on. But everyone here is so supportive of each other, the whole environment is so encouraging of working on your characters and their stories, and I've gotten so much nice feedback on my own characters that the whole thing just feels so much more like a legitimate thing that I should be doing, that people would actually read and care about.

As for forum threads, I'm not sure how to say this in a way that doesn't sound super dorky, but I really love that supportive atmosphere here and just want to add to it by giving people more spaces to talk about and develop their characters, say nice things about each other's, or learn more about their fellow creators? You know, just... what this forum is about. I read most of the responses to my threads and I love all the creativity and imagination everyone here has. I like the silly/casual forum games too, but it's probably not a surprise that threads like "Ask the person above OOC about their character", "Ask the person below for small help with your OC," and this one are my favorites, because I really like when people get to talk about their creative work or their interests or what inspires them in depth, or think about things deeper or help each other (I'm also a big fan of "The OC Job Fair" because everyone has run with that idea so well, and every response is always a lot of fun to read).

Oh, and I like answering forum games, of course, because I have decades worth of Catband Content™ in my brain and these help me develop them even more-- but mostly I like excuses to say nice things to people and let them talk about their projects, haha.
