Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 5 years, 11 months ago (Edited 5 months, 4 days ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

Gumdreary Do tell me about those Hermit crabs you had when you were younger. What were their names? How did you get them, feed them, show your love? I have a cousin who recently just got one as a pet and he loves it so.

I used to just pick up hermit crabs in the beach when I was younger, but I'd only look at them for a bit then return them in the sand. Thinking about it, much as I like the idea of having a pet, I don't see myself as one to take care of one yet due to my lifestyle OTL

[EDIT] Oh, I'm sorry to hear about that! Yes, we all make mistakes especially when we are younger. But hey, failure and experience make us learn! You'll do much better next time. :D Go for it!

hedgemaze Hoooo! That's a lot of questions! Lemme try answering them one by one. Thanks for asking!

I was wondering what Nathaniel's story is about, but if you don't want to say, that's fine. I got this from the summary of the story he's in: "This is the story of four men, of which two are brothers by blood and the other two are brothers in arms. Each of them are undergoing internal struggles, well concealed by a facade they put on at a daily basis. It was by chance the four became acquainted with each other and only time can tell what life has in store for them." Nate is one of the four mentioned. It's, you can say, a slice of life thing, with some action I guess haha. I'm not really good at explaining ;; I hope the summary well, sums it up! I can't give much info for now because it's an ongoing project.

How did you first get into roleplay[...] I got into roleplay in the summer before becoming a second year high school student, my friends introduced me to a fandom and we were roleplaying as the characters. Serious roleplaying (with ocs) began around college life. I was invited by @BEERDROPS to an rp group and since then I have created a number of characters for original content!

[...]and what have been your favorite settings and characters to play with?[...] I don't really have a 'favorite' setting, it really depends if the plot is interesting to me or not! However I'm not really a fan of high school settings (playing as a student, interacting with fellow students, etc) because that's really overused, especially in anime. HOWEVER if there is a slot or an opportunity to be able to play as a teacher, I would sign up right away. I'd rather play as an adult character watching over/guiding students in the sideline.

[...]Do you have any favorite moments that happened in a roleplay session (maybe something funny, or something that helped develop a character)? In my first rp group, I'll never forget that I intentionally made my character as someone I THOUGHT WOULD BE unlikable. I ended up attracting a crowd of people who're into those characters, and my character actually got some admirers. That is also how I discovered 'ossan' characters. Now I like them too.

How did you get into OCs and characters? What was your first character, and do you still use them, how have they changed?

Thanks for the questions! I always had characters, I guess: like any kid, I had toys and stories and art I made; the difference, maybe, is that I still use most of my childhood characters, even if they've changed so much over the years that they would be unrecognizable now. I hate abandoning characters, so I always keep them in the back of my mind until I find a way to repurpose them later.

Xero is technically my oldest character, but I was a baby when he was "created," so he barely counts. I usually say Silver is my oldest character because although I was a little kid when I "made" him too, he was the first that I thought of as a character, as my character, and he alone is the character I've used in most of my stories ever since. He changes with the setting, but he's always been this scruffy, harried, amiable guy trying to keep things going in the middle of chaos-- never a protagonist, but always important.

As for how he's changed, well, in real life he's a scruffy gray stuffed animal cat. : p He's been everything from a lost tiger prince, to the alien leader of a planet of space cats, to a guy working at an office supply store, to, now, a hippie sound guy in a story about a music competition (the entire concept of my current comic spawned from thinking about Silver and his friend Roadie's musical adventures, actually!). He's been haplessly in love, he's been responsible for an invasion, he's been best friends with a murderer, he's been a set-upon babysitter. He's been a lot of things, but he's always been Silver.

Judas-la-Carotte

Sorry it took a while to get to this ^^

But it is a good question!

It totally depends on the story I make, but for the one I’m working on called ‘Development’, I’m looking for simple, easy to recreate designs, such as Yin and Yang. My personal aesthetic is collet colours and I should probably get some more neon coloured ones to balance t out though.

Hmm... the art quality is important to me. It’s a turn off if the art is crap. However, if I like the designs enough, I will probably go for the character. I won’t take maker characters though.

As for premade VS new ones, I take a mix of both. If someone won’t use it, I’ll give it a good home and use the character. If it’s new I’ll do the same thing.

fuelli

I see that most of your characters seem to have been adopted! What do you usually look for in a design? Is the original art quality important to you or do you focus on the design only? Do you usually prefer to buy new adoptables or to trade inactive characters from their previous owners? :o

Thanks for the questions! However, I've unfortunately already replied to the first one one first page of this thread: https://toyhou.se/~forums/5865.forum-games/65621.ask-a-question-to-the-user-above-you-?page=1#post-1467906 ;w;

I don't think I really have a favourite project, haha! It would be like asking a parent which one of their children is their fave :') However, I think that I'm really fond of The Paradoxal Collection since that's the only one who is currently ongoing, so there's already a bit of actual content. It also chronologically takes place before all my other projects, and many characters of the cast end up being important historical figure in-universe, so I'm really attached to it!

But Flying Popcorn is my older (and still active) project, it introduces lots of lore... And Le Club des Treize has such a nostalgic, light-hearted feel to it... It's really difficult to pick a fave. I think it depends of my mood and what I'm currently working on :'D

wolfwantsred

If it's not too personal to ask, what got you inspired to start making comics? Which of your comics is your current favorite?
Oops, sorry about that!

That's a bit of a long answer so I'll try to shorten it a bit, ha.

Aimsir is mostly about how four lesser gods, known as monarchs, lacked communication. Leading to a downward spiral of mistrust and chaos that risked waking up a much older god who would reset the world without a second thought.

Dark Circus is a visual novel where you play as Arethusa, who has forgotten who she is and why she's at the circus, but feels a need to help the very miserable circus staff. The more she helps the more she remembers.

AlleycatIrony

u say ur working on both a visual novel and another novel, what are they about and what's ur favourite thing about making/writing them? :0

BLESS U THIS IS THE BEST QUESTION

my favourite game is gateway to glimmer (or ripto's rage, i guess) because it's a big nostalgic one for me, but i also really love (can u believe it) enter the dragonfly! people say it was the worst game but i'm not gonna lie - i had no glitch problems or anything with it and it was the one i was basically raised with and played whenever i could so that's what makes it my favourite! yeah the graphics suck but i really like the levels and stuff i've got good memories attached to it ;w;

AND I AM SO HYPED FOR THE REIGNITED TRILOGY OK i have a spyro blog and i'm updating it w/ all the spyro updates as soon as i see them and i check everyday :'D i can't wait until they release either pics or gameplay of spyro 2 that'll be so cool
only problem is i don't have a ps4 so i'm trying my hardest to save up for one so i can get spyro reignited when it comes out ;w;

i wish i could go back and 100% all the original trilogy but i don't own any of them except spyro 2 ;w; i would buy them again but good lord they're expensive even 2nd hand! i got spyro 2 off ebay second hand and it was $55 which was the cheapest there ;^^ tho i can defs say that i 100% completed that and was always playing it as soon as i got it in the mail tho omg

YunaNoire

Yooooo, so I know you like Spyro! Which of the games is your favorite and for which reason? How do you feel about the Reignited Trilogy? Do you often go back to the original trilogy just to 100% them for fun, like I do lmao?

PawzTheDrFoxFan

Favorite cartoon?

Well, i liked animals since forever, as I have lots of pets (5 cats and 2 dogs). Plus I have a lot of Disney movies on DVD

colorful

What made you like animals in general? It seems like the majority of your OCs are animals, so I'm asking this-- and if another question doesn't tire you, do you see yourself owning a normal human one day or not?

I'll answer the rest of your question in PM, but I'll answer what inspired me to draw!

latest?cb=20140928124652

Although it may seem badly drawn by others, one of my inspirations is Ryukishi07! His sprites and designs were so expressive that it really underlines the tone of his visual novels, so I looked up to him ever since I was an edgy kid who watched Higurashi. Putting my all-time favorite as a bonus ;)

PSLS-Image-Template-19-555x328.jpg

Also, I really love Takehito Harada's content, and you'd see how big its influence was on my content! Then we have a lot of Vocaloid PV artists/animators/webmanga artists such as Tsukumizu Yuu, Wannyanpuu, Sidu, Ryuuseee, and Avogado6 that makes the artist in me breathe

The rival part... hmmm, it's something really personal to me but all I could say about it is some people I've met when I was, of course, a whiny kid.

Darkanra

@wanco-alien
Heya, I see you like to draw~ (Saaame)
What first inspired you to start drawing? Are there certain artists you want to rival one day? How long have you been drawing for?

I really like your traditional artwork! I was wondering if you had any inspirations or influences on your art.

I'm know you've mentioned before that Catband draws a lot from your experiences in concert-going, so now I'm wondering, what are some bands you've seen or found through concerts? What are some of the most memorable sets you've seen, or just generally, most memorable concert experiences? Just storytime me pls, a concert in an empty swimming pool sounds wild. How did you even know some of these were going on?

lmao I've been to 400 or so concerts so you're asking for it, here. :p This will be long because I have thousands of stories. The answer to "how" is really that you just accumulate concert friends who tell you about shows, and you start finding out about everything. My friends have mostly moved away (one made out with my other friend at a party and then cut off all contact, disappeared, and is now traveling the country on bike as a wild mountain man) or don't have the time anymore, but for a few years we were doing the show-every-night thing (or 2 or 3 shows a night, sometimes).

Some favorite memories:

  • One of my favorite bands, Guided By Voices, reuinited in 2010 for Matador (the record label)'s 21st birthday at a casino in Las Vegas, and I flew across the country to be there. That was the first time I'd ever been on a plane, and that whole weekend was amazing. I was there alone which in retrospect seems insane, but that was my dream come true. Besides GBV, I got to see rare performances by Pavement and Sonic Youth, but maybe my favorite moment of that weekend was karaoke in the casino's lounge in the middle of the night with all these people from all these bands.
  • Once I followed my favorite band, the Flaming Lips, around the east coast in a space moth helmet. (Kliph the character is named after their then-drummer) The best part of that trip was when I went to Poughkeepsie to see them play in a municipal ice rink; the last train out is at like 10pm, so I got stuck in Poughkeepsie, hung out in a bar until closing watching a 20-inning Mets game since it was the only place open, then hung out on the curb in a space helmet while guys tried to get me to come home with them, then hid in bushes and dodged around corners ducking the cops until the train started running at 6am. Then I missed the train and had to wait another hour. Honestly that's one of my favorite memories.
  • Once I saw GBV by the waterfront in Philadelphia with two of my friends; one of them is my fave concert buddy, but he's a huge hypochondriac, and when he got glass from a smashed bottle in his hair he insisted on going to the medical tent, where the lucky bastard actually met the lead singer and got the bottle of Cuervo the band always passes around the front row signed. I'm jelly.
  • Hypochondriac friend did get our group of friends to meet the band a different time though, because people were stepping on us (me and another female friend) I guess and they felt bad, idk but that was fun.
  • I once got accidentally bashed in the head by the mic stand of the lead singer of Delta Spirit and he hopped off the stage to kiss it better lmao
  • I should mention how I met that friend; he and I were bitter rivals for ages since we were always fighting for front of the line at all the same concerts. One CMJ I decided we should be friends and combine forces, and we've been besties ever since. The first show I ever went to with him as friends was Phoenix at Madison Square Garden; this was 2010 so people thought non-mainstream music at big arenas was preposterous and the building didn't even sell out. Turns out they brought their friends Daft Punk to play with them.
  • We were at LCD Soundsystem's final show at MSG (before they eventually reunited). That was incredible, and so was Harvey Danger's final show. They played basically every song they had ever written, did fan q&a, and played everything anyone requested all night.
  • Once saw The Bravery play in my college auditiorium in front of maybe 20 people because ????? I later met them at a different show and mentioned that show and they were like yea we don't know what was up with that either.
  • I've been to some "secret" shows (they're not very secret, they're just small), but my favorite actually secret story is the time my friend and I went to a band's album release party at a hotel and it turned out it was just for friends/industry people so we had to pretend to be sophisticated until we could gracefully escape.
  • We got to see two of Kraftwerk's nights at MoMA when they did their album shows (Radio-Activity and Trans-Europe Express). Those were bananas.
  • I've seen Nada Surf/Bambi Kino/Doug Gillard a few dozen times because we're friends. It's difficult to pick a favorite story, but what comes to mind is the time Ira, the drummer, absolutely hammered, told us for like 15 minutes after a show about his get-rich-quick scheme to sell inflatable versions of the Stonehenge from Spinal Tap. My character Ira is named after him for probably understandable reasons. Or the time the bassist, Daniel, wouldn't let us go until he was convinced we had learned the "right" European way to kiss people.
  • I've been to some doozies of DIY shows (bucket if you need to poop; bushes outside if you need to pee), but my favorite are the kind where the soundguy is nowhere to be found so the band asks YOU how they sound, their girlfriends are setting up the drums, and 21+ is on the honor system.
  • The time Bambi Kino played a month-long residency with burlesque girls performing while they played, and everyone pretended to be in Germany in the early-60s.
  • A couple of Arcade Fire "secret shows": one on the Reflektor tour where everyone had to wear costumes (they'd provide if you didn't bring one), and they faked everyone out by performing on a stage on the opposite/mirrored side of the warehouse.
  • The time my friend and I went to see Skrillex perform in the warehouse across from the local supermarket and we eventually had to leave early and walk home because it had already snowed a foot+ while we were in there, and the buses and trains weren't running anymore.
  • The Replacements in an old tennis stadium, hell yeah. There were portapotties and if you found the right one, it was a door to secret beer.
  • The pool was this old abandoned municipal pool that some people persuaded the city to let them use for concerts and events for a few years. Eventually it got too popular and the city took it back and made it a pool again. I miss it.
  • Basically anytime anyone plays in Warsaw. It's this old Polish ballroom/cultural center that everyone is pretty sure is a mob front, but it's also a punk venue where you can buy homemade pierogies and other Polish food from grannies before you mosh.
  • Pour one out for Santos Party House, the drug den disco that had to legally change their name because "Santa's Party House" was an inappropriate name for a non-kid-friendly venue. I saw some interesting shows there but they eventually got shut down.
  • Once saw an actual cat band. They weren't "good," but they were purrfect.
  • I could keep thinking of stories all day haha but thank you for indulging me <3

Greetings from a fellow history lover! Is there any particular era/subject or geographical area that you consider your favorite to learn about? How long have you been interested in history and what first got you start on this interest?

How old were you when you learned a second language?

I think I need to explain first that my process of learning English (my second language? does it even qualify as one?) is separated into two steps. One is learning to familiarize myself with the alphabets as Thai uses the entire different set of alphabets (like, 60-70 alphabets in total, including vowels and intonation symbols). This started as soon as I was in kindergarten but as mentioned it's only the stage of 'familiarizing with the alphabet', I didn't learn much about grammars because kids this ages just learn easy words like cat, dog, apple, etc. at most. The only thing close to properly structured English sentence we learn back then is something like 'This is a cat.' - nothing more complicated than that.

If my memories serve me correctly, I feel that I began the step of learning more basic grammars around grade 3 or 4? Still,it was nothing more complicated than learning how to use 'there is - there are' which back then I still messed up and used 'there is' for plural nouns because I thought 'Ohhhh, matching the S!' << feel free to laugh out loud, even myself find this absurdly amusing this day XD

When I reached grade 5, it was the entire repetition of the same grammar lessons as the previous grade but somehow this was the first time I actually got it. (no more there is for plural nouns LOL though sometimes I still accidentally write that because my head isn't where I'm typing x_x) Past tense is first learned either in grade 6 or 7, can't recall for certain. And more advanced grammar lessons followed the later years...by then I already started my bad habit of not paying enough attention to the lesson. I was a weirdo that preferred to actually 'read' dictionary to find out about new words than perfecting my grammar.

how did you become so interested in Slavic countries?

Brief version - because up until a decade ago, these countries were kind of 'mysterious territory' for general population of my country (thanks to neurotic government during the Cold War era that banned everything about to them in fear of any information related to them would spread Communism :/). At one time, a sport team that I supported had a handful of players who came from the Ex-Yugoslavia countries and I got interested of their names - Slavic names were something very different from typical western Europe names to me back then, which I feel were easy to figure out which name was the French/German/Spanish or Italian version of a name in English. Little did I know loads of Slavic names also originated from the same root, just spell differently. :'D (i.e. - 'John' is 'Ivan' in Russian, Yuriy/Juri is Slavic variants of George)

I see you like the Sims, what's your opinion of the Sims 4 and the DLC :0??

I have only tried Sims 4 for a brief period, which was a mere base game with no EP and DLC. Thus I'm afraid I don't have a real answer to the DLC part. Game play-wise though, I really like the night club thingie! It's great to be able to visit such community lots and not being kicked into oblivious with blank rabbit hole. Also that now my sims can meet new people even at hours when everyone in Sims 3 would otherwise already sleep. I like the dig interaction, too - it's much more interesting than straightly picking up rocks and gems in Sims 3 (but the decrease of hygiene is really terrible when I send my sims on a quest to dig all rocks in their hood :'D). My favorite part is probably the gardening update which plants can improve quality directly - no need to plant multiple amount of the same plant and wait for the quality to improve. The create-a-sim function is greatly improved, the sliders function for neck/head/other body parts thickness is a real blessing, something I find I really miss when I come back to play Sims 3.
