It's finally time! I present to you my babies, the Calyptra Species! Calyptra are vampiric, anthropomorph moth-creatures with magical and limited shapeshifting powers. For more information, I have provided a Toyhou.se World, a DeviantArt Group and an Amino App where you can find the species guide and links to their lore and culture!

Our current event is a bit more relaxed and yields 1 Lightbulb for everyone drawing a Calyptra bby of the already existing list! Check out the bulletin for it here! Lightbulbs can be exchanged against MYO Slots and occasionally adoptables, some members of the communities around the species also accept them as payment for commissions. C:

There is also currently 1 MYO Slot for sale at 7 Lightbulbs or 10.50 USD, with no trait cap. However, please know that traits with a higher number than 0 on the Species Guide must still be purchased for their alotted Lightbulb-value (1 = 1.50 USD, 2 = 3 USD, 3 = 4.50 USD).

huathorne

these are so cool!!!

Broeckchen

Thank you! ;u;

huathorne

the updated art makes me love this species design all the more !!!

Prismakry

-vibrates- buuuuuugiiiieeeeessss

I need 50

Broeckchen

*happily vibrates* I am currently working on typing out the lore, and uploading everything here: http://sta.sh/2hnc26ryhc9

If you have any suggestions or feedback about that, it would be super helpful to hear it!

SweetieSylveon

Oh my lord their moths....... I love them so much..... I need 40. I will support this species until the end of time. Will there be a MYO event when the info is done, or will there be a DeviantART group?

Broeckchen

Probably both, actually! Most people who take interest in them so far asked for an MYO Event, so I definitely wanna make one. ;u; Thank you so much for your support, that really helps!

luxidoptera

This is such a cool idea and I need one. Please ping me if you do an MYO event for these.

Broeckchen

I will! I also try to make a bulletin whenever there's an update if that helps! C:

Prismakry

yes, def ping me as well if you do a MYO event <3

M0DERND0C

these are absolutely awesome and adorable >:0 i need at least 5 or else i might get carried away (and i'd probably be trapped with the grubs because you can't tell me not to ignore small things)

if there's an MYO event i'd love to check it out.

I hope it's okay to ping you guys for this even if it's not the event itself yet... but since you are the most interested in the species so far, I wanted to ask for your opinion on the structure of trait tiers and pricing, if that's okay with you? I want to make it a system that is user-friendly, fun and flexible. So here is my original idea:

You can see those little numbers and the mention of points in some places on the trait list and the additional information, I assume. My original idea was to basically offer customs and MYOs in the form of people being able to buy some kind of points from me as a sort of "middle currency", with which they can basically go shopping for traits. Points would have a fixed price per point, maybe at most I would offer a few bundles, and I wanted to keep track of them with a spreadsheet on my end. I wanted to make it possible to gift points to other people, trade them among each other if desired, and donate them to prize pools for events.

The advantages of this idea would be the following:

  • people without the budget to buy points or adopts could receive MYO points as gifts or in return for art or writing
  • I could offer bigger prize pools at events without sacrificing too much potential income for it
  • points themselves are easy to use as rating for event submissions to award them like experience points - this could help keep groups dedicated to Calyptra more active by awarding points to especially nice submissions
  • it would do away with potentially misleading claims of rarity when a trait ends up super popular and widespread, while still keeping high point value traits a bit special
  • people could collect points over time or pool them with friends
  • MYO slots would be very flexible since one would ot be bound to package deals with a fixed number of certain tier traits
  • this system would exist side by side with pre-made adopts that could be obtained via different _TA-methods, and if anyone would want to forego it completely, I could give them the price an MYO/custom slot with their desired traits would cost, so they wouldn't need to bother with the point sytem
  • even points received for free (through events or as rewards) could be transferred to others, so people could share their spoils from events or rewards if they didn't need all of them for the MYO/custom they want
  • if someone wins an MYO or custom slot but not enough points to get their ideal design, it's easy to calculate how to make up the difference and to earn said difference through trades, submissions or even just purchase it without having to get a whole distinct bundle

However, I do worry that this idea might feel too clunky or overwhelming? The most common system, wherein the different tiers of traits are sorted by "rarity" sits very wrong with me as a way to do it myself (I absolutely respect that others do it though), so I could adapt a similar system but maybe at least use words like "Gold Tier", "Silver Tier", "Bronze Tier" for it instead?

A friend of mine also raised the concern that such a "middle currency" or virtual currency kinda thing could raise moral concerns... He compared it to mobile games and how they tempt players to spend money by making the process more abstract with virtual currency you spend instead, even thought you need to pay money for that currency in the first place. I naturally don't want to end up harming anyone by accident this way, so I am very interested in what you think about this: Would you be worried that you might end up spending or trading points too freely, more so than if you handled real world currency of the same value? Would you be worried for other people? And if so, do you have any ideas for safeguards against such an exploitative effect or would you prefer if I just didn't use a point system at all?

It's also important to note that while points would have a value in real world currency and could be purchased for such, they would also be distributed for free in events and rewards as I mentioned earlier.

Also if any of these things are already accomplished regularly through different methods, please tell me! I am admittedly new at this, so I'm not super familiar with how most other creators/owners handle this part of their species.

Also² I keep using the term "points" so far, but I would love to find a better name if I implement this system, so if you have any ideas, I'm open for that. So far, I've considered "drops" and "scales" - the former after the liquids that make up most of a Calyptra's diet, the latter after the scales on a moth's wings. But... they might both be bad. ;u;

Thank you guys so, SO much for your support! I know I've been quiet the past two days or so, but it's just because I'm in the process of wrapping up another project so I can dedicate more time to this soon! I already have a few new ideas in the pipeline that you might enjoy, and here's a little sneak peek for some potential adopts some of which might be given out and some of which might be auctioned off at launch. So stuff is happening! Thank you for your patience. ;u;

First off, the point system sounds amazing, but if you do it that way, then only certain pieces of art should count towards points, and some may not even get points at all.

(I'm going to reference the Tokota HP system for a moment.) So basically chibis would be 0-1 point, but not fully count. However, full scene pictures would be like 10-15, who knows. However, maybe more. Although, this would lead to a few issues with the spending rapidly. I do believe that the points should stick to art and events, as using real money would be kind of ridiculous in some ways. (Now trust me, getting real money for the adopts is great, but for the points, not so much.)

But the tier system seems to work too. Gather enough points and you can get a certain trait (ex. adding on another common trait would be so much and maybe a gold trait would be a lot of these points.) Transferring points this way would be good as well. Maybe someone's art ability is down, but hey, someone can give their points to them and they could get whatever they want for their Calyptra. Not sure, just an idea!

Oh, and for some who can't get money in real life- (cough, me, i have no job yet and i dont have an allowance, cough) -the art-to-point system works alongside the events. I just feel like art based currency works best for people, haha. (My opinion though owo)

I'm looking forward to seeing those designs colored and finish, though. The bottom two interest me a lot.

(also, great examples for point systems would be, once again, Tokotas, and also Wyngro on DA. Their point systems are organized well. Not sure of any others though.)

@Broekchen

I love the idea of Points! (I'm already in a Species' with a system like this, so I am very familiar with it, where drawing your own character/someone else's rewards you with points (if you'd want an idea of how it works, I could show you?)), and I adore the idea of sharing it with others! Its not at all a clunky/overwhelming system, (At least not to me), and I think it encourages people to participate!

 I don't think that giving them away would be a problem, but you could potentially get drama of "So-and-so said they where going to give me X points and didn't!!" or someone pressuring somebody else to give their points away, but I think stuff like that could be rare, and another downside could be keeping track of everybody's currency.

I'm also sorry if this doesn't make sense/not what you where asking ;w;

Broeckchen

SweetieSylveon

No worries, you got it all right and this is super helpful! I'd be very happy to see that other person's point system! *u* Thank you so much!

Also, you raise a good point about promised transactions and such... maybe I should ask people to notify me ahead of time when they request art or writing for points, so that if I see the artist/writer kept their end of the deal, I could do the transaction anyways?

@rosieoci

Yeah I was mildly inspired by how some RP groups and Pen & Paper systems handle Experience or internal currency, so I bet the system is very similar to this HP system! I think points would be a fairly special reward, maybe instead of tying them to specific types of art there could be a set pool of points that will be awarded every month, and the so-and-so many best pieces of the month get them possibly with a cooldown period so one amazing artist won't grab up all rewards everytime)?

Thank you so much, you two, your input helps me a lot!
