Species ideas?

I usually take a real life animal and do something major to it, for example with my Lurrikai and jellyfish - I turned it into a bubble-covered humanoid based loosely on a jellyfish. Perhaps that might help?

Also, a general idea for the world might be a good idea first. For example, Ichidus is a mainly sandy part of Renadia, so I thought “what animals typically inhabit deserts?” The first thing I thought of was a mouse (for some reason), so a mouse became some of the basis for my personal species Ichidenne.

I just don’t want to give you any ideas you might not like, it’s largely something you should do so that it’s more likely to stick with you for longer.

Ditto on using animals as inspiration. I have thought of two different species/races that were based on existing animals and a mythological creature (though they have not been fully fleshed out yet so they're not public right now). Same for the setting :)

You can also probably think of a concept you like and build a species around that. For example: "I'd like a creature that can fly and cast wind-based magical spells. What would it look like?" And from there you can once again get inspiration from animals and other things, or you can make something up; the sky is the limit haha. I have a species/race (also unreleased) that revolves around individuals that are each completely unique in appearance and traits but also share most of the same abilities and weaknesses - sort of like a human being, but a bit different and much more variable.
