The Bin has gotten such a good reception and several regular users, and I'm super thankful it's turned out this well! Thank you to everyone who's contributed their characters, and to the people that take these characters in!

Ugh this is really really stressing me out. I feel like I'm the only one who got any negative effects from this topic being brought up. Idk what to do right now... I really hate when characters get taken back from me. It's happened before and it always hurts so much but I don't have any right to say no. *sigh* I hope things get figured out soon and I wish I had more input and suggestions I could give.

I feel like option A is the best option. There /are/ people that I feel are 'frequent fliers' when it comes to the freebie bin, and wherein that's fine, there's got to be some sort of limit. I understand if I miss because I'm late, but if it's always the same person, it feel less so like they are attached to the characters, and like it's on a whim, or just because it's free that they're taking it, you know what I mean ?? i think that it would make it more fair if there was some sort of 1-2 chara daily limit set.

@animecafe102 if you feel bad because you think you're taking too many charas, then, well, you're probably not ! and even if some people think that you're taking too much, 3 a week isn't really that bad. But, if it really does bug you that much, then maybe just take a break from the thread ??? or put some free charas back in, to balence your concious. you really shouldn't be getting this stressed out over a free character thread

In the end, it is the decision of the person giving the freebies to decide whether a person gets more than 1. But I also think there should be a limit, so I like Option A. I see the same names get tons and others who don't frequent the thread as much get none. The rule should mainly apply to big stashes or large TH folders.

SpaceSheepy

damiin yeah that's true, I do plan to put some freebies up myself soon but I'm probably gonna wait till things are fixed and such, I have some old adopts that never sold and stuff like that I can put up haha

entropicteacups

I think option A would be awesome. I lurked the thread a lot on my old account, and there were times I would see one person adopting hordes of characters in a row and not letting anyone else get a chance - that's really the only time I ever really got frustrated by it. I have a TON of characters, so amount someone has really doesn't bother me - it's more the rudeness of constantly grabbing a lot of characters and not letting anyone else have a chance at freebies that bugs me.

The-Scarlet-Berry

I also agree on a time frame period and most of the suggestions :)
I recently took allot of freebies. But now I limit myself to ones I know I will use and draw, apart from ones i may use to write my story with, and actually ive restricted myself from taking for free, I prefer to trade or buy them TBH.
I know it probably seems like my characters dont get love, but I take the time to find a name to fit who I want them to be and theirs bios stay unwritten because D: I havent written anything good in 2 years, idk where my writing talent went

But I do indeed  try to draw all of my babies at some point, tho limited time. I apologize if anyone has seen me and thinks I just hoard characters LOL

Asakura_Michi

I always get angry when good characters are snatched away. Like I always check if there is a new message from the thread and there is never one but after one hour there are a lot of freebies that are taken by the same person  :(

jetsetspy

Thank you for making this thread! I think that the first idea is probably the best solution to take, but maybe at the same time I don't want to limit anyone regardless of how many characters they've gotten

I suggest that before the owner transfers a character they allow a wait time of an hour or two to allow others a chance at the character. During this wait, the potential owners could discuss their plans for the character or even discuss co-ownership and the person giving away the character can later choose who they think would be the best owner.

To be fair though, I do agree with pocketcarnivore. It's hard to get a character when you aren't good at writing, and I personally find it very difficult to come up with a character's purpose and story on the fly. I think the discussion aspect of my idea might help, but if anyone has something to add to my idea, feel free

firanzia-vice

I like the new rule idea! I often find that I miss out when the same people end up sniping all the cute freebies!

nesstchi

I am all for having a set limit of freebies one can have from a set person. Even if half the time I rarely get to freebies because of my timezone, I do admit that sometimes I take two characters ;v; however, I always think to myself first 'Will I use them?' I reckon people need to think that as well when adopting, y'know, because I'd hate to think any of my characters are going to collect dust. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way! I'm not pointing fingers or anything, I just think it's a good idea ;v; sorry if I offend anyone without meaning to. I also think that more people should explain what they're going to do with the character, or why they want it. It still is FCFS, but maybe people want to know if the character is going to a good home? I treat all my characters like real beings, and I'm sure others do too, so I do think that adding even a small sentence of why you want the character would go a long way!

This is just a suggestion and my personal opinion, and I mean no harm to anyone. Again, sorry if I offend!

Taters

Im pretty new to it, but I feel like instead of just having a rule people should ask for info on what it will be used for. The last one I adopted was like that and it really helped me decide if I needed the adopt that much or if I just though it was pretty. The person I adopted from wants more than just a 'can I has dis'. I think leaving it to anyone having a chance to get it causes those hoarders to be allowed such ways.

mrpuppychow

Hey! I would like to thank you for actually posting this bin in the first place. I come by here everyday and every time I visit it, I get this vibe I'm visiting the World Trade Center and watching characters come and go. It's like a big hall of the sort and it's just fun to watch every now and then. Personally, I've only managed to get 2-3 characters from here, but that's mostly because most designs here don't catch my attention to grab.

There has been one situation where I failed to snatch up a character in time. It's very rare that decent ferals (the ones not made from bases, mind you) get posted on the bin (mostly humanoid and human designs). I happened the find the one I liked. However, after finally checking it out to see if I'll find a good use to the character, one refresh of the page and it was taken quite literally the instant I decided to adopt it. Whether it was from a regular visitor or not I don't remember, but it was the only moment I felt that I'm just not active enough to get anything. While that experience was "a downer", it definitely doesn't compare even the slightest to other situations that actually caused me to vent my anger.

Personally, I feel that the Freebie Bin should continue running at that unregulated way. Sure, I would totally love to get a better shot at getting a freeb out there, but I feel it'll be unfair that the rules get changed on the get go. What made the bin active and fun in the first place is the whole "first come, first served; take what you want 'cause I want them out" system. If you restrict that, there will obviously be a point where the bin itself may lose that activity as it leaves little incentive of checking the bin in the first place (or even feel like a chore in claiming a freeb).

There may be some people completely interested in getting rid of their characters as fast as possible. If I reckon correctly, it took a while before Aria-chan was able to reduce their character stash significantly. They still have plenty of freebs up for grabs. I'm pretty sure many people still have a load of freebs and would rather give them away, but many are too focused on getting "the good ones" over getting any random character and and try giving it some love.

Another thing to note is that not everyone is able to come up with backstories on-the-fly. Just recently, I was vouching for a character from rhensei (specifically for my sister that doesn't have an account here just yet). However, neither of them aren't capable to coming up with a backstory quickly enough. Knowing that it's rather unfair to ask for a hold, I retracted my claim. Another example is on my own TH. If you noticed, many of my waterdog characters have nothing in their profile but art. Every one of them is being developed offline, complete with story and relationships. I've spent 2-3 months doing so and I feel they're still not ready to be posted on my page just yet. In fact, I've ended up selling one after owning her 2 months. The point is, there are some people who would rather get a decent amount of time to decide on how a character is going to be used and if they'll end up liking it.

Personally, I feel that this sort of thing should be up person putting up the freebs to decide what the limit should be. Maybe they need to get rid of them ASAP; or they're the kind of person who would love to see their characters not become trading fodders. Placing a generalized limit seems that it would only make things worse for a dynamic place like this, even if that's the last thing one would want happening. It definitely would be unfair that those who regularly come to the bin all of a sudden get the cold shoulder simply for being the ones to bother subscribing to the thread and be active enough to participate in the fun activity of freeb-trading. At the same time, the regulars should also be a bit more considerate on letting the inactive noobs get a chance at loving characters, especially those that tend to claim more the 2-3 characters in one go. Whatever it is, I feel everyone is responsible for this sort of issue to come up in the first place.

Honestly, the bin is fine as it is. It just needs to be used more responsibly and each should be able to decide on how they want to give away or claim their freebs.

@animecafe102 Don't feel bad about yourself. Yes, the main concern of this thread thingy is to allow more and more people to have a chance to adopt characters. I'm pretty sure this wasn't intended to make bin regulars to feel bad for taking characters. Remember that before this topic was even brought up, the place was run on that previously mentioned system. Obviously, there will be people who can take advantage of this policy and those who definitely can't.

It's not your fault. It's actually more of an unseen issue in which took too long to actually bring up. I mean... if this sort of issue was caught WAY earlier (and it could've been considering it doesn't take long into the thread to find out who the regulars are back then), people obviously wouldn't have adopted as many and thus not feeling guilty now. I guess it was the whole "regulars vs. non-regulars" situation where everyone is afraid to express their opinions in fear of causing a flame war upon themselves.

SpaceSheepy

@goldenretriever well I mean I can't help but feel guilty when a user took back a character from me due to this being brought up, it makes me feel as though I'm in the wrong for adopting too much even though I thought I was limiting myself pretty well nowadays... So it's not necessarily the thread itself that's made me feel like this but the fact of what has happened because of it. No other regulars had this happen so it's kind of upsetting being the only one suffering from this topic being brought up. Not to mention the people who brought it up were being pretty hostile about it.

nesstchi

@ANIMECAFE102 I have seen you around, and I don't think you take too many at all! It is fcfs, anyway. But I think it's rude of them to be hostile about it. I mean, taking back a character is fine, but they shouldn't need to be rude.

I know you feel guilty, but as I said, you haven't been hoarding them! I'm sure you use each and every one of them, and that's the main thing. ;v;

SpaceSheepy

@00crepuscular00 oh no the person who took back the character wasn't hostile at all! The people I felt were being a bit hostile were the people who brought this topic up as they worded it in a way that sounded as if they were blaming people who have adopted characters a lot
