Thud.

A quiet sound, not too noticeable at first.

Thud, thud.

There it was again. It came from the pile of geodes at the center of the Lucid Altar, gleaming in its ever-wondrous, glittery appearance.

Dango lifted his head  to pinpoint the origin of the noise, looking very sleepy. Quietly, he got himself up, disengaging himself from between the warm bodies of fellow geodes, who snored soundly, then languidly stretched, as wide as an Ichigato would.

Seeing as the sound continued incessantly, the geode followed it to its source - a big mountain of shells that contained the yet unborn little geodes. The egg making such noises was near the top. The small vespire investigated it further, noticing it seemed like it was about to fall over - the small movements it made were enough to make it roll over.

With a yelp that he couldn’t hold in, Dango quickly moved to catch the geode before it fell to the ground. He was able to seize it between his front paws, then kept hold of it for a few seconds, breathing hard. Vespire eggs were usually pretty durable - but Dango just wouldn’t risk it, especially because Azariah seemed to do so much to ensure the eggs were constantly safe.

Speaking of her… Where could Azariah be?

She was very oftenly seen at the Altar, protecting the unborn shells under her enormous size. To little vespires such as Dango, the difference in size was even more apparent, as she towered over all the babies. Albeit the height, Azariah was always very gentle to all of them. Especially the ones who didn’t look like they’d be collected by their parents so soon… It was like The Arbiter could just sense who those were. He knew that because of the looks he got from her - very warm ones, if a bit pitiful in nature.

A few moments later, when Dango was a lot calmer, he heard a mumble from behind him. When he turned his head, he noticed two other geodes had woken up as well.

“What’d you have there, Dango?” He heard Elijah mutter, rubbing her eyes.

“I just caught this geode before it fell.” Dango commented, looking very proud of himself. Between his arms, the egg was still making insistent noises and wiggling.

Another vespire, the ever grumpy Gauss, was awake, too. He quietly sat down, observing the interaction with a frown.

“Really?” Elijah perked up, her face full of wonder. As if forgotten, there was no trace of sleepiness remaining on her face. She strutted to the green vespire with a big smile, and bent down to inspect the egg. She even slightly touched it, awestruck to see it move.

“It’s hatching!” Elijah beamed, then nudged it with her nose. Dango excitedly nodded, carefully protecting the geode with his little paws. At that, Gauss finally took an interest, but tried to approach them casually, as to conceal his attentiveness.

Elijah was a little distracted interacting with the geode, but Dango was quick to notice Gauss’ presence, and perked up.

“Do you want to touch it, too?” He encouraged the dark-colored pouflon, which made Elijah turn her head in curiosity and Gauss wrinkle his brow line.

“I will touch you if I want. You’re not its parent, so stop acting like you are.” He chided in a raspy voice. Dango scoffed at him, indignant at his unnecessary rudeness.

“Oh, yeah? But it was me who saved it from falling!” He retorted. Elijah just kept swiftly alternating her gaze between Gauss, Dango and the egg, a tad bit preoccupied. The eclipse-eyed vespire was preparing a comeback, but a sudden movement from the egg made Dango yelp, and everylon turned their heads to see.

“It’s cracking! I think it’s cracking!” The geode yelped in a bit of wonder and desperation.

“Well, give it a bit of space, won’t you?” Gauss quipped angrily, but a bit nervous as well. Dango quickly scurried away from the egg, lowering his head to inspect it from an angle.

A few more moments passed, and they all jolted when it shifted again. Elijah anxiously approached it again, slowly.

“Maybe we should help them?” The bicolored vespire suggested. “Auntie Azariah is usually here to help everylon, but she’s not here right now…”

“You buffoon, what if you just disturb it and muddle the whole thing?” Gauss complained apprehensively.

“Well, I don’t want to see it like this and do nothing.” Dango quipped back.

“Okay, Dango, you hold onto this side, and I’ll hold onto the other.” Elijah decided with a firm nod. She ignored the exasperated look Gauss sent them, and when Dango nodded back and agreed, they positioned themselves, the geode still moving.

“You nitwits! Stop this!” The dark-colored vespire yelped, and pulled at Elijah’s long star-tipped tail.

“Let go!” The bicolored vespire complained. Dango kept holding his side of the geode, as he’d been instructed.

“Gauss, stop!” Dango demanded in a frown.

“You guys are just disturbing it!” He insisted, pulling harder even as Elijah complained.

“It hurts, let it go!”

Then, it all happened in a mere instant.

Thud.

All the pulling from Gauss from one side and the firm hold Dango had on the other made the shell break open in a single noise.

And it was divided right in the middle.

A small baby geode stared with big eyes at the three of them. Then, an incessant series of excited baby vespire noises echoed through the Lucid Altar.

“We did it!” Elijah laughed.

“Yeah, but it doesn’t shut up now!” Gauss complained again.”It’s too loud!”

Dango just laughed alongside them, just glad it had all gone okay. He couldn’t begin to imagine what he’d do if Azariah had shown up in the midst of them doing this, but he could picture at least the biggest scolding of their lives. For now, he was just content in observing the younger newborn geode, even if they made a lot more noise than somelon so tiny should be able to.
