Kingsley, or Night as he was better known to everyone else wasn’t the brightest of the bunch and he himself knew that, he preferred to act then think, throw his weight and size around and not care too much about the here and now or why, he struggled with speech too to top it off, even with the collar it was as if he just couldn't form the words. He’d been like this his whole life, told he was void of emotions and what people viewed as common sense, it made others think he was stupid, many thought little of him and treated him poorly, that’s why his union with Corvus was a good idea when the inky Aphex suggested it to him.

Their companionship wasn’t for love, compassion or anything it was a business deal, they’d benefit off eachother and get what they both wanted in return. Corvus would get the brute he needed to seek the control and power he desired and Night would be able to have a place where he wasn’t shunned for simply not understanding or called stupid, but now those lines had faded as the years passed and their union had turned into something many would probably call love. The two didn’t think of it that way, both devoid of most feelings thanks to how they were born but if it was one thing Night never expected it was that Corvus never treated him as others did, as an idiot. Sure Corvus would call him out for breaking things he honestly shouldn’t have broken, or yelled at him for killing someone on the middle of an interagation but he never made him feel stupid, infact if anyone even incinuated as such Corvus would almost go mad with anger, honestly it was what Night liked, maybe even loved if he could feel such a thing, about him the most even if right now Night was just staring at his husband.

He blinked;

Once.

Twice.

Held up a hand to ask a question then thought he’d better not interrupt and slowly put it back down, he’d learnt enough about Corvus to know when his husband was lost in his own world.

Corvus was ranting about something, as he usually did in private, honestly Night always found it oddly amusing how animated Corvus could be when he wasn’t around others, it meant he was comfortable and after what was probably 20, no maybe 25 years of being together Night was glad Corvus was comfortable in his presence, not many were.

“I don’t understand why on Allure that halfwit would think this was a good idea!” Corvus was mostly talking to himself, Night just being there to listen and watch, he’d say offer support but realistically he knew he couldn’t. “I swear Malice was never a good fit here trying to weasel his way into our good books-“ Night would have smiled at that if he felt much emotion to do so, it had taken at least 12 years for Corvus to refer to them as a pair, he’d counted. “Now Verosika tells me that he for some unknown reason is working right under Alioth? Of all Aphex he chose that snake”

“Father” A small voice spoke from behind, Corvus was too caught up in himself and too far from the door to notice their young daughter Rose standing in the doorway. “What’s Daddy ranting about now, he woke me up” She rubbed her eyes tiredly and only then did Night realise that she was holding her blanket in the other hand she wasn’t using to rub sleep from her eyes. Night looked down at his daughter before giving her a gentle, a very gentle pat on the head and leading her out of the room. Corvus would be fine, honestly he probably wouldn’t notice Night's disappearance with the state he was in, nor would he be annoyed at him leaving either.

“Come daughter” Night tried not to sound too harsh as he held out a finger for his daughter's tiny hand to wrap around as he led her back to her room. It wasn’t far from Corvus' office and honestly it was no wonder how she’d been woken up, you could hear Corvus pacing from here.

“Is he mad that Mr Malice went to work for Alioth” Rose asked as she climbed up into her bed that in all honesty was too large for a child of her size, she was so small and fragile, the bed could easily fit 4 regular Aphex, it looked like an ocean with her in it.

“How do you know” It wasn’t so much a question, Night sat down on the edge of Rose’s bed and let her continue to hold onto his fingers, as long as he didn’t move too much he didn’t run the risk of hurting her.

“Daddy talks a lot to himself when he gardens, I’m not sure if he means too. I think the voice collars just pick things up” She gave a half shrug as she played with his hand idly. “Why is daddy mad though, Mr Malice needed another job” She spoke so innocently, she didn’t know the whole truth and honestly neither did Night, Corvus handled the nitty gritty of it all but had taken the time to explain to Night the fundamentals, so he guessed he could try passing on what he understood of the situation.

“Malice was… Trusted” Night tried to find the right words as he grinded his teeth together, he knew what he wanted to say but getting it out was another, Rose being the blessing that she is didn't even think to interrupt, she just sat patiently waiting for him to continue. “Alioth is, was your dads enemy”

“Alioth was his main competitor in the bad guy job you used to do, when you would go round ripping people in half” She looked far too excited when she said that, almost getting to her feet with excitement but Night gently pushed her back into bed.

“It concerns me how you, now this” He grumbled out with a small huff, only for her to giggle under his grasp before he let her go. “You are right though” She beamed up at him happily, she was too smart for her own good this kid, or too nosey.

“I’m always right” She continued to beam, wiggling further into the sheets happily as she did. “I’ll talk to Mr Malice, he told me that he’d never lie to me, then I can tell Daddy-”

“Rosalyn-“

“Please” Night was taken back by the sadness in her voice, looking at his daughter who was purposely looking away from him, he reached a hand to her but stopped as she continued to speak. “I know it’s my fault you aren’t in business anymore, I just want to help” She sighed before tucking herself into bed and facing away from Night. The larger Aphex just blinked down at his daughter, how could she- she was so young and to think she blamed herself for their early retirement?

“Rosie” Night slowly laid down behind her and in a very uncharacteristic moment wrapped his arms around her small form, pulling her against his large chest with such gentle care as not to harm her. “You’re the best thing that happened to us, don’t forget that” He continued to hold her close, through the tiny sniffles until she fell asleep in his arms, it wasn’t in his nature to stay but… For once he felt compelled to and he too shut his eyes to join his daughter and drifted to sleep.

He wasn’t sure what time it was when he awoke, through blurry eyes he could tell it was still dark out but he huffed lightly at what he saw. Corvus had joined them, his long inky colour tail wrapped around Rose who was nestled between them. Corvus, unknown to anyone but Night, couldn’t sleep alone, he must’ve snuck in to join them after seeing he wasn’t in their chambers. Night looked their daughter over, she still slept soundly then over to his husband who was staring at him.

“Go back to sleep, my love”

So he did, but not before he pulled Rose and Corvus closer.

Beings void of emotions they were so often called that they’d began to accept that it was the only truth, here though, they were far from it.
