So I'm in this group that has me write quite a bit about some of my characters, and I figured I could put that stuff as a series on here! These short stories probably won't connect much, if at all.

an adventure begins [basil + friend]

Basil was a world wanderer, a self proclaimed brave adventurer, and the kind of guy who loved to get into trouble. He had a lot of friends that he could visit whenever he liked, though none of them ever managed to keep up with him. So he was quite used to heading off on his own to new places. Exploration wasn’t out of the ordinary for him, so when he arrived in this brand new world, he was expecting a lot of fun things to happen. His blue trinket that allowed him to travel through space, and sometimes time, had been taking him to weirder and weirder lands more recently.

Basil had arrived to this odd new planet in the middle of a red forest. The leaves were bright and bore the colors of fall, despite the fact that it was supposed to be spring. How intriguing! The red panda wasn’t sure what to make of this place, but he was sure excited to find out what would happen. So he got to his paws and glided through the trees, just barely off the surface of the ground below, and hummed a merry tune to himself. All was well and good until he nearly tripped over something under-paw.

He landed with a surprised squawk of alarm, and turned back around to see what had interrupted his adventure. An odd pile of leaves was resting in the middle of this forest, and when he moved all of it aside, there was a red and green egg hiding beneath. “Now what are you?” the chipper fellow said, mostly to himself. He was always quite fond of eggs, because eggs meant new life and baby birds and feathers! But this was different.

From everything that Basil knew from his time wandering, parents didn’t often abandon their eggs out in the middle of a forest. They had nests, places to protect their young! This didn’t seem like a very good place at all. But it wasn’t just the placement that had Basil confused - this egg felt like something more, like it was calling to him. Not sure what to make of it, the winged red panda carefully rolled the egg towards him and knocked lightly on the shell. “Are you okay in there?”

There were a few moments of silence, of almost expectation, and then the egg hatched in a torrent of fire and shine. When the flames cleared, Basil saw a brand new face looking up at him, and felt the deepest connection he’d ever had slam into him all at once. He felt that the whole world came to a crashing halt, and it was just him and this new creature. There was something new, in his mind - a new presence, one he welcomed, although with a lot of confusion. And suddenly he received an answer to his question - not in words, not really, but an explosion of feelings that seemed to say ‘yes, yes I’m alright, now that you’ve finally arrived’.

As this odd creature blinked trustingly up at him, Basil couldn’t help but smile back. “It’s, uh, it’s good to meet you! I’m Basil.”

The newborn being wriggled out of the egg, leaving just the shell behind, and snuggled up against Basil’s warm fur. “Oh! Are we friends now? That’s good. I really love new friends. Maybe that could be your name? Friend?” He had never been particularly good at naming things, but as soon as he said the word the little dragon nodded eagerly. It climbed up his back and came to a stop on top of his head, where it fell asleep quite quickly.

Basil was left standing there, a mixture of confusion and joy in his heart. He didn’t quite understand what was going on, but he felt quite the charge to protect the little guy asleep on his head. Carefully, he stood up, and started walking, at a much slower pace than his quick flight before. Perhaps he could find someone from this world who understood what was going on? He whispered a quiet promise to his new dragon as he headed off.

“We’re gonna go on so many adventures together, Friend. I’m sure of it.”
