A bunch of short little stories from Sonnet's foalhood. Somewhat in chronological order, and only loosely connected with each other (minus them all taking place in Candentia, when matters were simpler and times were happier)

1 - Mermaid

The spindly young colt and the dainty young filly were almost never seen apart, from the moment they were born. Almost always touching, never more than a few feet away from each other.

Their soft, impeccably groomed coats matched as well. One with a light purple coat while the other was blessed with a coat reminiscent of the deepest oceans or twilight sky. But both had similar similar hues of blue in their coat, intermixed with glittering stars, and identical streaks of moonlight along their back.

Sonnet, the colt, was the older of the pair, whereas Minuet, the filly, was younger.

To any observer of the two foals, it was immediately obvious that Sonnet was the more daring and much more outgoing of the two. Almost always a step in front of his sister, loud, brash, and at times, utterly unapologetic in his ways. But his voice had a certain musical quality to it, and he was certainly charming enough to get away with anything —in a way that seemed strangely befitting of the eldest grandfoal of Regent Radiance's. Minuet was much quieter —gentle and soft spoken, especially in comparison to Sonnet. But Minuet was just as charming, and held her head high in the same stately manner, as if Minuet knew, from the moment she was born, her place in the world.

This was could be easily seen whenever their father, Noxaeterna, took the two foals out of the Candentia Palace where the foals lived —not for ceremonies, where the two foals stood silently behind the granddam, two little foals carefully taught to play the roles they did— but rather, when he took them to go on adventures, exploring the city, or the surrounding lands.

On the first of such adventures, Sonnet had bounded ahead of his father and sister, a bright grin on his face.

"Hurry up!" he had shouted, "I want to see the manatees!"

"Patience," Noxaeterna said in reply, "They'll still be there for a long time."

Sonnet frowned, "But I want to see them now."

"But look at the waterfall!" Minuet commented to her brother, "The gems are so sparkly!"

The purple colt looked back over at his sister, pausing for a minute, before quickly stepping to his sisters side. He craned his neck to try and see the gems. "Oh, they are! Father, can we grab one for Grandmother?"

"Grandmother would love them," Minuet agreed, to her brother's delight, "Father, can we?"

"If you two don't mind getting a little wet," Noxaeterna said, "But beware, the waterfall is very cold."

"I'll be fine!" Sonnet bravely said, leaping into the water. Magic shimmered in the air, and the water parted as Sonnet stepped forward, a control of magic that was completely instinctual for the young foal. Sonnet didn't seemed surprised by his display of magic, simply grabbing onto a few gems and hopping back to shore. He shook his mane, drying it of the few droplets of water that had still splashed onto him.

"Wow! There's little mermaids carved into the gems!" Sonnet said excitedly, holding one up for Minuet and Noxaeterna to see. Both leaned in closer, eyes widening in surprise. "This is even better than manatees!"

"The mermaids are cool," Noxaeterna said. Minuet nodded, agreeing with her family. "Now, how about I hold on to those gems, while we go find the manatees?"

"Okay! Let's go see the manatees now!"
