Wrong Number
Koi can't cope well with the death of her boyfriend.
It's been at least god... 5, 6 years since he's been gone? Man it's hard to remember. It still hurts like it's yesterday. On days where it's just unbearable, I call his old phone number, just to hear his answering machine. It's the most comforting thing at the time. Today was one of those times. I pull out my phone before going on to my balcony where I dial that memorized number.
It rings 3 times like normal, but instead of the normal answering machine, it was something different.
"Hello? Who's this?" They asked. I almost dropped my phone onto the street below.
"Oh... Sorry for bothering you. This used to be my boyfriends number before he died..." I replied, choking back tears. "I always called his answering machine once he passed so I could hear his voice, and I just wasn't expecting someone else to get it..." Silence filled the other side of the phone. "I'll stop calling you if you want me to."
"Wait... No..." Their voice seemed almost parently. "You can call this number, I understand what it's like to lose a loved one. I might not be him, but I can sure try." Tears finally fell down my face.
"Thank you..."
