chapter one

Alex walked slowly. She wasn’t looking for anything in particular, just knew she’d know what to do once she saw whatever it was. She had just left some woman’s apartment, after two glasses of wine that didn’t affect Alex but, of course, affected the human. It was dark, but the city lights and cars rushing by on the street illuminated everywhere around her.

She found a dark corner, an alley, and ducked inside. Chaos could always be spread in places like this.

The cold metal of a gun’s barrel immediately kissed her forehead.

“Back off.” She warned.

The person behind the weapon moved slightly, and the neon green light from the shop that made the wall to their left illuminated half of their face. A male. Shaggy hair, dark blue.

Those eyes...

“I said back off. You’ll regret it.”

The eyes narrowed, such a bright yellow. She’d seen eyes like that before. That color was unique. No human had eyes like that.

“At least speak.” Alex grabbed his hand where it was on the trigger, holding both his hand and the weapon still. Under her control.

He didn’t even flinch. She felt his finger stiffen on the trigger, though. Why wasn’t he talking?!

“I’ll take this stupid gun and shoot everyone in this alley.”

A whisper in the darkest part of the alley expressed concern, and three large males fled out onto the sidewalk. The stranger with the gun to her head sniffed.

Alex tugged on the gun, hoping to disarm him using pure force. He didn’t budge, but let go of the gun. She stumbled a few steps back and dropped the gun.

Clever.

He moved like a blur and the gun was back in his hand, to his side this time. Alex got ready to fight, but he simply walked back into the alley, where secrets weren’t exposed by the lime colored light Alex had her back to.

She jogged after him, curious, a feeling she loved.

But she couldn’t find him. He had disappeared.
