Author's Notes

in the colony, kits don't get their names until they're apprenticed at six moons! this is because a large number of kits don't survive to apprenticehood, and their parents don't want to get attached to a child they could lose at any time. until then, they are numbered by the order in which they were born, so here Ki is One, an NPC kit is Two and Ni is Three.

One reached out a paw to poke one of her brothers again. She'd been the first of the trio to open her eyes, and she wanted her brother to join her in the world. Yes, she'd been able to smell it for a little while, but this was new and exciting! The bright lights and colours had been a little painful at first, but she'd soon gotten used to it, and seeing everything was so much better than just smelling it anyway. Her bright blue eyes took in every detail of the den around them one more time, just to revel in the sensation of Seeing, with her Eyes. "Come on Two, you'll want to open your eyes! It's so much better than just smelling it." He didn't move in reaction to her high pitched voice. In fact, he was very still indeed. With their mother out of the den and their father goodness knows where, nobody was around to help little Two as his life faded away. Unbeknownst to One, who thought he was merely asleep, her weaker little brother slipped from the living realm.

Deciding that Two wasn't worth her time, she moved over to Three, whose dark pelt let him blend into the darkness of the den so well that she had to find him almost entirely by scent. When Three was compared to his brother and sister, who both had very light pelts, anyone who didn't now they were related already would hardly be able to tell they were siblings. "Three. Three. Three. Three. Come on, someone has got to wake up soon. I'm lonely."

As if on cue, Three opened his eyes a little, and sighed. They shared the same piercing blue kit eyes, but while One's went well with her almost entirely creamy white pelt, Three's stood out in stark contrast to his deep black fur. "Sister, did you have to be so loud?"

One could barely contain her excitement, and let out a shrill squeal. "Three! I knew you'd come around, Two's being unreasonable." Three rocked up onto his unsteady paws and waddled over to one, crashing into her and melting them both into a purring pile of kitten fluff.
