Hunting 1 [Vitalus]

Today’s story takes us to the lands of Vitalus, where Einar is visiting two friends of hers and for the first time ever gets to see the magical wonders of this place. Considering how wonderful it is, she will have a lot to learn and discover in the upcoming weeks that Einar will spend away from her home in Roenden. Having arrived on a day prior to the current one, the Vayron Deadeye had put forward the idea to go on a hunt for the Roendener’s first day in Vitalus, so that one could get used to the particularly strange flora and fauna, while also warming up to each other again after a long time of no see.

“I have to say that everything here is so different from what I imagined it to be like,” Einar said while they were walking westwards of Ebrus, the city where Aura’s home and therefore their basecamp for this time was located.

“You are disappointed?”, Aura asked.

“No, not at all,” Einar laughed. “In the complete opposite, it’s so much more different from the rest of Reos than I could have ever imagined. I mean, I knew all the stories about floating islands and that everything had some magic in it, but I couldn’t have ever imagined how that actually plays out when seeing it myself.”

“I have heard that a few times before,” Deadeye said. “It seems like reality is often far away from what we make it up to be. Oh well.”

With these words, the three of them quietly walked next to each other while taking in the surroundings all around. Einar was especially fascinated by the crystals that were growing everywhere like rocks were laying around in her home Roenden. Shimmering in all kinds of different colors and often covered by moss or mushrooms, they were giving everything a more chaotic look, growing the feeling of inexplicability. Time to time they would pass a floating island that would hover in the air more or less high above them, making her wonder how they managed to stay up there at exactly the same spot, as Einar couldn’t spot any movements in the flying grounds. Not much later they walked downwards into a valley through which flowed a river that had created it over the longest time imaginable. Noticing how life was flourishing here in all of its forms, Deadeye’s focus was especially concentrated on a group of geese that were bathing in a small pond a little up the river.

“Hey, do you see the geese over there?”, he said. “I bet their feathers are worth a lot, we should consider hunting them down.”

“Not only the feathers,” Aura agreed. “Meat from wild geese is quite hard to find in some places, so I totally agree on that.”

“You should try to hunt them on the ground, Deadeye,” Einar explained her plan. “And we’ll try to catch as many as possible of the ones that are flying away because of you.”

“That’s a great idea,” the others agreed and prepared to put it into action. Einar took place further up the hill, while Aura stayed down in the valley, though both didn’t launch into the air yet as it would have alarmed the geese too early on. Deadeye went a small bit down the river, where he waited a short while to make sure the others had some time to prepare too and then started gaining speed until he ran around the corner hiding him from the geese, moments later jumping right into the pond and grabbing one’s neck in his teeth. In the meantime, Einar had swung herself into the air and was now grabbing ones with her claws, which worked out rather difficult but was successful overall as she managed to get a pair after a while. As Aura had been having similar difficulties, she decided to fly back to the ground, in the process of which she managed to take down two geese herself by just landing on ones that were trying to lift off into the air too late and kill them soon after.

“Wow, that was super successful,” Aura said.

“Did you expect anything else from us three?” Einar joked.

“We should stay here for the night and use the rest of the day to take out the geese so the meat stays fresh and the feathers intact,” Deadeye concluded and the three followed his plan. Their camp was now located in the small valley near the river which carried fresh water and covered by a few trees, perfect for the night.

A little later in the evening, when the sun had already sunken behind the horizon, but some light was still coming from the sky above,  Aura managed to catch a rabbit that had tried to sneak past them in the dark with her eagle eyes, so they ate that for dinner.
