The sun was setting, pinks, purples, and navies were melting into a darker blue hue in the sky with glinting stars shining bright. Curse was taking their nightly rounds at the campsite. Their spindly paws slinking through the high grass, weeds, and dirt, they lowered their almost black head to sniff the trails they made with little feet behind them. Their body was a mix of three colors, white, brown, and a color that could resemble black if not a dark brown.

A ghostly feral, fluffy bundle of fur and claws jumped at a small white ball of fluff between Curse’s legs and past their long thin, flowing tail. One shouted in surprise and tumbled with the black cat on top. Curse’s false ears perked up as they heard the two familiars play-fight behind them.

There were no humans tonight, just the wailing breeze, planes flying overhead, and the sweet silence. Well, silence for the most part as crickets played their screeching tunes and the cicadas screamed.

The black and milky white kitties rumbled, ran in circles after each other. Curse looked in their direction, huffed, and lay under their rose bush. Another black, long-haired cat approached Curse. The boy bonked his head against Curse’s and gave a long, happy purr. The boy spun in circles, stretched forward with a yawn, and laid beside Curse.

The two fuzz balls whipped their head to Curse and their familiar friend and began to race towards the two. The black one skidded in first place and landed onto Curse, which made Curse grunt telepathically to communicate to them. The second feral familiar halted harshly, their nails digging into the ground. Curse sighed in almost relief in their head. At least not another one of these kittens ran into them.

Curse raised their head and held the little kitten down with a paw and said, settle down. Curse turned their head toward the sky, watching the night take over the day with their one only eye.

The pinks, purples, and navies were now a dark blue with shining stars shining even brighter. In the distance, a shooting star lazily grazed across the sky. Curse moved their limbs and stretched just before laying their head down and felt the little ones lean against them and bury into a cuddle puddle.

The summer air was nice and warm, the crickets and cicadas all went to bed, and the campsite was simply silent.
