Koi sighed at the ceiling again after she tossed. 1 am. Insomnia was a bitch for sure but it was never this bad. Normally she could text someone to come over and watch a shitty movie with her and help her fall asleep but she was a lot different than the others, especially in her school schedule. She had this weird gap in between April and September and she’d be totally ok with this.

Except for the fact the others are still in the middle of school and Sen, the only other person on this break, was going away to a different country in a couple of days for an exchange program they set up for “publicity.” She had shown a bit of interest in it but the second it was revealed she would be even farther than she would be at home from Sen, she politely declined, saying that she didn’t have the money for it. Not helping was her obvious crush on him that he was too oblivious to notice. She wanted to tell him outright but he was the only friend she had at the academy so Koi kept it bottled up. Then, she had a sort of idea. Getting out of bed and heading to the closet, she dug through her cosplay materials to find scraps from lots of old projects. This could possibly help. Making a couple of notes to herself, she went back to bed, throwing on a vine compilation and drifted off to a restless sleep.

It was 6 am when she woke up next. Not the worse in her record, but she could do a lot better. A text went off on her phone.

S: Hey could you fix one of my shirts while I’m gone? I’d do it myself but I don’t know how to.

Ah yes, Sen keeping up his known loveable idiocy despite her showing him how to fix it many times if it was the spot she was thinking of again. Koi just thought that he did that to have her work on it since her needlework was a lot more precise to the school’s than his.

K: Do you want me to waltz in or?

S: Please? 🥺

K: Give me a few.

Wait if he was letting her waltz in, then she could figure out what cologne he used that smelled all so sweet to her.

One trip to his house later, Koi basically had most of the plan in her head. Fix his shirt by referencing the one she “borrowed.” Give the borrowed shirt the spritz of cologne (it wasn’t an expensive one.), wrap it around a pillow until the other part was done and boom.

But first she had to go to the store and get the cologne. And some other supplies.

This was an issue she never saw coming. There were distinct parts of his hair that were faded into pink from orange and the fade was something she most likely couldn’t achieve with fabric. Would yarn work since there’s gradients like that? That would require more research.

It was done. A stylized but near exact replica of him. Koi could finally feel at ease for once. Snuggling into its shirt, she took a whiff of the cologne. Just the right amount that she spritzed. The breathing/heartbeat mechanism was a different endeavor all together, but with the flick of a switch, it almost felt like he wasn’t in a separate country. A voice box was in the works but she still couldn’t get some of the tones just right, no matter how many vocaloid tutorials she looked into. Realizing it was super late at night, Koi finally got into her pajamas and laid in bed, finally able to get some good sleep.

A couple of months had passed since the exchange, and Sen was still none the wiser about a shirt being missing. Probably because he owned like 50 of the uniform top because he kept ripping them. Koi had more or less became dependent on her doll to get a decent night’s sleep, a little bit after he returned, Koi finally got that voice box in order and after a couple of restless nights, it was installed and Koi could sleep like a normal person.

Oh no. Koi forgot to put the doll away before Sen came over and he was in her room. Not helping was the potential for their out of school friends coming over. How would he react to essentially an animatronic of him just casually in her bed? Let alone in his clothes with his cologne. Her heart started to pond so fast and loud, Keith could probably rap to it. Would he call her a freak for it? Show the entire school? End their friendship?

“Hey Koi! Did you make this?” She heard him call out. Koi slunk to the doorway shivering, hoping she wouldn’t be in trouble. “The craftsmanship in this is amazing! I’m actually kind of shocked you got the streaks that accurate.” Koi mentally sighed. He hadn’t found the mechanism activation points. Sen only thought it was a doll and not a creepy replica. Koi silently nodded, looking like a dog with its tail in between its legs. Sen frowned. “Why are you acting so nervous? If your worried I’m going to be mad, I’m not.”

” That- That’s not just all there is to it.” Koi finally slunk into the room ready to just admit everything. “That’s your shirt and cologne on it as well.”

“Did you miss me that much during the exchange?” His heart sank. If he would’ve known, he wouldn’t have taken it. She nodded again before going over to the bed, propping it against her knee and lowered the top part of the collar, revealing the breathing mechanism on switch and the switch to turn on the voice box.

“Just put your head up against the chest.” He nodded and did just that, Koi turning on the mechanism. A minute, then 2 minutes before she turned it off.

“That’s incredible! Think of the people you could help with it!” Koi started welling up into tears, her fears finally crumbling into herself.

“Please don’t hate me for this..” She weakly replied before typing something into the app she made for the doll’s voice.

“Hiya! I’m Squishpai! Koi’s personal cuddle buddy!” was emitted from the doll.

“Why would I be mad about this? You clearly put a lot of work into it, I’m shocked you got every vocal inflection right, it was like hearing myself talk but without hating it.” The dam broke and Koi was sobbing into the real Sen’s chest.

”I thought you would call me a freak and it would ruin our friendship and if it were up to me the thing that would ruin it would be me telling you how much I love you, not a stupid doll that I made because I missed you over an exchange program that I took too far because I was so sleep deprived.” She cried, not even caring about her secrets being spilled. Sen only just pulled her in tighter.

“Koi..” He sighed. “Why would a doll ruin our relationship? If anything it just means you paid more attention to the small things I mention or do rather than the whole picture perfect side that everyone at school sees. Also do you really think I was that oblivious to your crush? Your body language tells all.”

The hug tightened and Koi realized something. No matter how much she focused on making her doll as realistic as possible, nothing could top a real Sen hug.

“So please, call me if you have these insomnia problems again. Especially now that I’m back.”

Now Koi had double the cuddles as she pulled the doll in close as well, finally feeling at peace, and falling asleep in their cuddle, even if it was only 11 am.

”Sleep tight Koi. We’ll both be here when you wake up.”
