have you ever shown us Deepdarks mom thats listed on his ref? :0 i think seeing her and young deepdark would be super cute
I have not, but she will appear in the Deepdark backstory comic. She died when he was only a few weeks old so they didn’t have much time together.

huge fan of the new issue! i was specifically confused about the terms poinsetta used towards cormorantpaw in the 2nd page and was wondering if you could explain them! specifically “black dread”, “grimalkin”, and referring to thrasher as “rotten gut” (which may have been just talking about the way he died, i’m not too sure)
Sure thing! I wanted Poinsettia’s dialogue to feel very unique compared to other characters. One part of that is that at least one word in every sentence she says is italicized; it gives a rhythm to her dialogue that other characters don’t have. The other is her unique word choice, such as in the examples you asked about.
I could’ve sworn “black dread” was an actual phrase, but when I look it up all that comes up is the Targaryen dragon, so I guess I unconsciously stole that from ASOIAF. She’s referring to his fur color and calling him a thing to be dreaded.
“Grimalkin” is a real word, and it’s a medieval way of referring to a cat.
No, he’s not trans, I just used it as an old word meaning cat.
“Rotten gut” is a phrase I made up, but she’s basically calling Thrasher a nasty piece of work. He’s “rotten on the inside”.
She was the absolute most fun to write.

it's so interesting how defiance seems to claim that they defy the natural order of things and give animals a sense of freedom by giving them the ability to defy the world's natural order... when (from what it seems like, at least) a large majority of the cult is literally just made up of the leaders' kids..... Almost like.. you know..... cults function via indoctrination, sometimes even nepotism, but most importantly, trapping people within them and keeping them from leaving.......
I really like it when two people, completely unrelated, muse about a similar topic in my inbox.
Regardless yes, a big part of Defiance/Deepdark’s idealogy is overwhelming hypocrisy - it’s mentioned fleetingly here in Issue 28:
And it has different meanings to the believers in Defiance versus Deepdark. For the members, “hypocrisy” feeds into the appeal of Defiance, a power fantasy of doing bad things but not feeling bad about it. You can feel “free” to be a hypocrite, to defy your own actions and get away with it all. This is a lot of what swayed Rainhaze in the end.
There’s a deeper meaning for Deepdark, though; he talks a big game about freedom and nature and empowerment, but truthfully he’s a violent, abusive man running a group that takes advantage of vulnerable or easily manipulated animals to get powerful himself. He is a true hypocrite, of course. But he’s convinced many people that he’s not.

deep dark hasn't shown up yet cause he's getting drunk on crabapples at the Windfall festival
Just a little detour.
the most compelling thing a guy can ever say is to another guy and it's "i wish you were a girl" . like record scratch. wow the implications that this phrase has. i think it needs its own bechdel test

Obsessed with elderly cat Nightberry so crushed by grief and rage she kills a fox that is bigger, stronger and has more battle experience than her! Also Pinepaw ripping Hacksaw's wing~ Pine & Night rage!!!
Ranger finding the way to have his little revenge is so fun, too!
And in contrast, Cormorant choosing to chase off his murderous semi-friend rabbit because he's tired of killing...
Our no-good uncle reveal is amazing, and I love how menacing he looks in the last frame, despite (or perhaps because!) he hid himself from his family and was dissociating in the back of Defiance's army.
Also R.I.P. his raccoon friend?
Slugpelt being attacked by Cupid and killing him was also so good - but I wonder if Rainhaze will even notice or care, with how far gone he seems.
I can see why Nightberry is Like That in one of your human AUs drabbles!
In the goblin fridge, I’ve been putting up little descriptions for each issue, and Issue 36’s was:
So I’m glad that theme was picked up on!
Nightberry is a vicious old lady and no one should ever underestimate her.
