Kithood
Birchkit was born right at the beginning of the war together with his siblings Lightningkit and Spiderkit to their dedicated parents Lizardtooth and Duskstep. Both incredibly loyal cats to their Clan with a great belief in StarClan, they taught their kits early on the importance of the Warrior Code and the words of their ancestors. They would grow up to many stories of prophecies and Codebreakers, always highlighting the punishment the Codebreakers would get for disobeying their leader or StarClan. Other stories that often appeared were the ones that talked badly of the other Clans. It was the time of war after all, there wasn’t much good to talk about them at that time.

When they were old enough to leave the nursery, they often played in camp, which their parents greatly approved of as they knew that the plays would sharpen their senses and skills for their training and the war later on.

While their parents were good ones, they could also be very strict. Especially their mother Duskstep. A misstep against the rules of someone of higher ranking than the kit’s was immediately punished with a ban to leave the nursery or to stay in the nest for the day entirely while their siblings were still allowed to play. Birchkit at first had many problems with this as it was sometimes hard to remember all the rules while being caught up in the play, but the older he grew the more he understood.

The Clan was his home and family, he did not want to disappoint them, but rather be of help to keep them strong.

Which is also why his ears immediately twitched with interest, when he heard another kit named Fernkit wanted to organize a hunting patrol. After all, their Clan had a lot of bad luck with prey since he was born and it sounded like an amazing idea to him! Though, a good thing that Fernkit had thought to ask a warrior about it beforehand. It quickly turned out that it would be against the Warrior Code for them to help out with hunting, as kits weren't allowed to leave camp alone. Glady, none of them got in big trouble for the try.

Apprenticeship
Now Birchpaw, he was apprenticed to the warm-hearted younger warrior Sparktail. He quickly learned what he needed to be a warrior. Always dedicated to learn and improve. The tom showed great talent in his fighting lessons from day one and his mentor encouraged him every time, as they knew great fighters were needed in the war. When the apprentice outgrew his mentor, Sparktail was not ashamed to ask around the other warriors for new techniques to learn or to lay an eye on his apprentice on a training lesson to assist him further.

Though, while he was a great fighter, Birchpaw often lacked behind in his hunting skills. Even if Sparktail meant well with all the special fighting training, it lessened the young tom's chances in improving his tracking or hunting skills. He was far behind his other two siblings, especially Spiderpaw who turned out to be a great hunter. When his parents picked up on the big difference in skill between them on a hunting patrol, they made sure to have a word with Sparktail who only now seemed to notice his mistake in training.

Embarrassed by this, his mentor began to shove in a lot more hunting practices, especially since it was getting close to their final assignment.

Though, a few days before his final assignment their patrol got attacked on one of the borders. It turned into an ugly fight, both sides determined to win this battle. Birchpaw had fought in the midst of it, until he could feel his wounds weakening him. Letting him retreat to the border of the fight, where he saw Fernpaw badly injured nearby.
Getting another warrior’s attention on him, they quickly made their way to her and brought her away from the battle towards their camp.

While the battle was lost for ShadowClan, at least none of them had died. Still, many lay in the medicine cat’s den that day. One of them Birchpaw, who had gotten a nest right next to Fernpaw and the warrior with which they came. The first few days the other apprentice only sulked quietly in her nest. Staring angrily at her surroundings.
But after she found the courage to thank them after all and the both of them talked a bit on their last days in the medicine den.

Then, the day of his final assignment had arrived. While the extra training in hunting had helped, especially with his sense of tracking, it was still something he was struggling with. This lack of skill let him nearly fail his final assignment, but in the end he was able to make it through.

Warriorhood
Named Birchfang, for his great fighting abilities, he sat together with his siblings, now named Lightningstrike and Spiderbite, at their vigil. Their eyes and ears were at attention to guard their Clan from any predator or intruding Clan as their mouths stayed shut. Their voices stayed silent and so did the forest around them through their vigil until the first cats could be heard to rise up in camp. They were then sent to their new nests in the warrior’s den and were able to rest after a long day.

The striped tom made sure to aid his Clan in whatever it needed from this day on. Guarding their territory, fighting in the war and hunting for them. Still trying to improve in the skills in which he lacked, as he knew he wouldn’t be able to give the Clan his fullest if he couldn’t hunt. The moons went by, new kits were born, new apprentices and warriors were named. His sister Lightningstrike found a mate who she loved and whose dedication was also greatly valued by their family.

Birchfang too had started to form a closer bond with one of his Clan mates. Ferngaze, formerly known as Fernpaw had her nest close to his own and over time they began to talk some more. Especially when she had been ordered to take a break from her mentor, as she had thrown herself into battle after battle the moment she had gotten her warrior name. He had already greatly admired her for her dedication and loyalty before they became so close. But now this feeling just started to grow stronger and warmer. Of course his siblings were quick to notice his looks and teased him about it here and there when they sat together to share prey. Especially when he would once again go out hunting together with the she-cat, he could feel the looks of them on his back.

But one day, the she-cat had asked him about feelings that she felt for another Clan mate. Feelings she couldn’t quite grasp what they meant. For the tom it was clear, as they sounded very similar to the feelings he felt for the she-cat right next to him. Though in his feelings now also came the mix of sadness and disappointment, as he assumed those feelings of hers weren’t meant for him.

Then, their mother Duskstep grew ill on one fateful day in leafbare when Birchfang was 20 moons old and while their medicine cat tried everything to pull her through, her eyes still stayed closed on her last day. The illness had taken her much too soon for her family and they grieved greatly for her loss. While she had been strict, it had never bothered her kits except maybe for Spiderbite, but still they all had been close and her loss was noticeable even days after.

It was a time where he would often speak to Ferngaze, seaking her closeness even if he knew that she would probably not feel like he did and their nests were soon right next to each other. Often they would fall asleep right next to each other.

Lightningstrike announced her awaiting of kits four moons later, which brought at last a spark of joy back to the family and just a few days later their leader had assigned both Birchfang and Spiderbite an apprentice of their own.
While he couldn’t say it for certain, Birchfang highly suspected that the choice had fallen on them to bring their mind off of their grief and give them a needed deep sense of duty.

Birchfang still had the grave mistakes of his own mentor in the back of his mind and while he was older now than Sparktail had been back then, he was still determined to not make the same mistakes.

And so he made sure to send Cinderpaw on as many hunting lessons as he did fighting lessons, taking him on patrols so he would quickly learn the everyday work of a warrior. Cinderpaw had been a good apprentice and even if they got in a discussion or two, because of the apprentice’s hot-temper, Birchfang could say with confidence that he was proud of the young tom.

One morning, when Ferngaze had wanted to go out and hunt alone with him, she suddenly stopped and began to let her feelings out towards him. Rambling along as he was too shocked to say a word until she finally confessed to him. He had been that cat, that cat she had spoken about moons ago.
There was a small pause where he tried to find his words again, before a warm look washed over his eyes and he confessed his feelings to her as well. Affectionately rubbing his head against hers.

It wasn’t a surprise for anyone in the warrior’s den when their two nests finally became one and they announced their mateship soon after. Of course this wouldn’t stop his siblings’ teasing, as they now started to talk about him being the next in line of their family to become kits of his own together with his mate.

On one day of his training with Cinderpaw, as they were walking along the ThunderClan border, they spotted one of their own patrols close to their border. Too close if you had asked Birchfang and with an eager Cinderpaw they confronted the opposing Clan. The temper high on both sides, words quickly turned to claws as they fought on their border. While none of them had gotten away without a few claw-marks of their own, they were able to chase them off and Birchfang watched them run with his tail and head held high. An approving nod towards his apprentice at the successful fight.

Cinderpaw’s final assignment fell right into the tipping-point of the war, as just after the other’s warrior ceremony, where he had gotten his full name Cinderstrike, the WindClan camp had been ambushed. While Birchfang didn’t feel much pity for the enemy Clan, others saw it differently and it led to discussions about peace between the Clans.

Just a moon later the first gathering after 30 moons of war took place on the island. A place he had only heard stories about as he had never known a time without war. It was a weird feeling sitting between their enemies, but he tried to keep his claws sheathed. At the end of the gathering, the end of the war was made official and the time of peace could begin.

It was strange for Birchfang. This time of peace. It was no longer acceptable to start fights with the border patrols of other Clans, as long as they stayed on their side of the border. Though even if it was new to him, he was glad for it in the end as his sister’s kits were now able to grow up in a time without so much bloodshed. He would sometimes visit Lightningstrike and her lively bundle of kits in the nursery and tell them stories of the great war.
