Simple things you can do right now to support Gaza if you can’t strike by staying home from work/school

  • queue posts about Palestine to regularly post throughout the week to keep them visible. Check tags like: #strike for gaza, #free gaza, #ceasefire now. I’m going to share posts from Bisan and other Palestinians on instagram.
  • don’t spend money on nonessentials. if you didn’t have time to prepare for the strike and still need to get groceries/medicine/etc, get it now to prepare for not spending the rest of the week! striking for even part of the week is better than not participating at all.
  • read bit.ly/StopGazaGenocide, this is a document put together by the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR) with lots of good information and graphics and link to art you can freely use to spread awareness. There is also a link to email your representatives to urge them to stop supporting the occupation and the email is pre-generated! it took me one minute to send emails!
  • email your representatives that you are striking for Palestine!
  • keep talking about Palestine. keep reading about Palestine. keep caring about Palestine. If you make even one person pay attention, you’ve done good work! keep going!

Do what you can! Doing ANYTHING is better than doing nothing.

First 4 panels of an 8-panel comic. Header reads: "Jan 21st-28th. Global Strike for Palestine." The first panel reads: "Bisan Owda has called for a global strike from Jan. 21st to 28th. Do what you can to call attention to the occupation and genocide, be disruptive, and push for a ceasefire! Any amount helps! Perfectionism and defeatism don't make a difference, but taking any action on this list might." Panel 2 depicts a person walking away from speech bubbles containing a phone and a computer. Text reads: "Call out from work or school. Do it with other folks if possible, to disrupt normal operations." Panel 3 depicts a person hanging up flyers on a wall in the street. Text reads: "Share flyers and information." Panel 4 depicts a person on a phone call, and writing an email at their laptop. Text reads: "Urge political figures to take action. Threaten to rescind your support if they don't."ALT

Text reads: "Be visible. Show your support openly and don't stop talking about Palestine." Panel 6 depicts a person turning away from a storefront. Text reads: "Disrupt the economy by refusing to purchase anything, or any non-necessities." Panel 7 depicts a person looking at Pro-Palestine social media posts on their phone. Text reads: "Limit social media use to the discussion and support of Palestine." Panel 8 depicts two people talking together. Text reads: "Last but not least, tell a friend!" The words "tell a friend" are underlined. The footer reads: "Do what you can!" in all caps.ALT

I will be queuing this post for every day this week. IDs in Alt text!

Do what you responsibly can, even one on the list will mean a lot.

frankly, the people whose kneejerk reaction to bisan asking for a global strike form the 21st-28th is to say that it takes years to organize a general strike are really unhelpful! no one is saying otherwise, but palestine will be a smoking crater if we all wait for years to do anything - bisan is asking us to do something now. Like are we only supposed to do something if we can do it perfectly??? At some point it’s a valid critique about the work that goes into social movement, and at another point I feel like some people are just trying to absolve themselves from not putting any effort into observing a week of economic inaction.

like idk! I get it, okay! People have bills to pay that don’t magically go away for a strike, we don’t have nearly enough social infrastructure in place to support people to fully stop going to work for a week. But fuck, dude! Stop immediately responding in such a defeatist way! Cut out unnecessary purchases! Try to shop local! Put more effort into promoting Palestinian voices online! Attend a protest, call a local rep, do something!

Ultimately, the context of this (these) calls are different than ignorant calls for a general strike in the past for a few reasons:

1. It is being called for by someone affected by the situation. Social media calls in the past have often been called by people unconnected to the struggle or without any sort of connections to the work or others involved in the fight. Who are you calling for a strike? What is your role? Which gets into

2. Demands. With these calls for a strike, there are specific demands coming out for those in power to respond to. It’s not general dissatisfaction with capitalism, it’s not vague response to bigotry and oppression, there are goals. Ceasefire. Flow of humanitarian aid. End of occupation.

3. Very crucially, there is a spectrum for what is included in the general strike and a blatant recognition of how there isn’t time to prepare. Take off work (if you can), don’t go to school (if you can), don’t spend money (if you can), keep up pressure and protest (if you can), amplify Palestinian voices and sources, continue boycotting.

“Well I can’t call off work.” Neither can I, but there are items on the list I CAN do. Many people can’t attend protests but can pressure their reps. Many can’t pressure reps but can spread word on social media. Or financially support Palestinians. Or babysit for someone going to a rally. Or or or.

My law school once had a walkout. Those who couldn’t walk out wore something to show support. Signed petitions later. Pressured admin. If you “can’t do anything,” show support for those who can.

This is NOT the same as disorganized naive calls for strikes with no goals, no planning, and no thought.

Do not treat them the same if you cannot do everything asked. And do not waste your time asking Palestinians to forgive you for what little you can do when you could be doing any of the shit on this list instead.

Hey. Gentiles. Listen up for a sec.

When September and October are nearing and you’re planning an event: google “Rosh Hashanah *year*” and *Yom Kippur *year*” and then, and I cannot stress this enough, don’t plan your event on those days. In fact, don’t plan any events starting sundown the night before. Those are the three most important days of the Jewish calendar, and, once again, I cannot stress enough how much this little bit of forethought and kindness will make every Jew you know cry tears of joy.

in 2023, the night before Rosh Hashanah is Thursday evening, September 14.

Rosh Hashanah ends Sunday evening, September 17.

Persona/PNGtuber Reference Sheet!

I’ve had this sketch done for a long time now and finally got the chance to sit down and work on finishing it! This serves as both a reference sheet and a style guide for myself while I develop it! I had a lot of fun putting it together, especially the alternate forms at the bottom!
