Redstorm’s Pagedoll Tutorial

Welcome to my pagedoll tutorial!I aim for this be a simple launchpad to get you started! So I will be going over movement and simple line art tips ✨

Hello! I have gotten quite a few requests for a tutorial so here it is!This tutorial will cover the basics of pixel pagedolls and how I make them on Procreate. I’m sure the process can be done on other drawing apps thoughMy process isn’t perfect, and I find new little tips and tricks with every piece! So hopefully this can be used as a starting platform for your art journeys :))

First I open up a canvas. Just about any size you use to sketch withNext I create a sketch! In this process I find it best to be simple as later on that will help with pixel details. Don’t be afraid to do some dynamic poses ✨

Next I make a new canvas using the custom plus sign tool and paste my sketch in. I usually use unique dimensions for almost every piece I makeFor this tutorial I will be using a size of 219 x 195Press this button to see different canvas size examples and additional information ^^

By now if you don’t already have it - You’ll need a pixel brush. I don’t have a lot of knowledge on brushes but I do use the Bardot Pixel Brush Set! It’s free here with this icon!

For any other art program I suggest searching on YouTube on how to create pixel brushes (or searching for brush packs online)

For line art I mainly use the Untitled Brush here

Before truly getting started here’s a tip! When doing line art I clean up the pixels and make them look neater! I find it makes the art look a bit nicer

From here it’s best to decide which pieces you’d like to move (As they will be drawn on separate layers)I usually start with the legs and wing in the background like here. I usually put them on the same layer, but they can also be separatePieces on the same layer will be moving in the same direction

From there I use a new layer for every body part! Remember to layer the body parts in the correct order. In this instance I would do the tail next, and then the torso and neck

Next color :))
Remember not to merge any of the line art layers yet (You will be using a lot of layers)

Next is rendering! It is my favorite partThere is no right or wrong way I think. Be free and see what works. I usually like to use bright colors and pastelsAfter I am done rendering each piece I merge the line art layers with their respective piecesI also add in a new layer and draw arrows in the direction I want the body to move

Then after that I save the animation using Procreate’s Animated GIF option!

After everything is done I upload the Pagedoll to Pixel Art Scaler! It is extremely helpful in blowing up small gifs without losing qualityThere’s no right or wrong way to make any pagedoll bigger I think
For reference I try to make one side of the canvas at least 500 pixels
