Most of the time, I don’t use many layers, so you’re not missing much by not seeing the painting software’s user interface.

I usually start with one drawing layer, paint underneath on another layer, merge the layers, then paint directly on that.

Sometimes I’ll add a layer filled with paper texture set to the ‘Overlay’ or 'Multiply’ layer mode, or add a layer per photograph if it’s a collage art piece. Occasionally I add a layer filled with a single color on low opacity and set it to 'Soft light’ mode (or 'Lighter color’, 'Exclusion’, 'Overlay’, so on), and then duplicate the original layer that has the merged painting in it, move this to the very top, and set this to 'Brightness’ mode to help maintain the original values (the relative lightness/darkness of colors) even though the hues are still affected by the aforementioned 'Soft light’ layer.
