Okay so. I haven’t been the greatest at dealing with commissions and the like. And I understand that. However, I am currently closing my commissions for an indefinite amount of time, seeing as a ~wonderful~ thing has happened.
And yes, that is sarcasm. Here’s the story.
My very…round and beautiful cat decided a few weeks ago that she wanted to jump onto the shelf I have built over my desk, of which usually holds a lot of very nice (and some terrible but funny) figurines of varying sizes. She then proceeded to knock over the largest and heaviest of all of them down, hitting my open laptop right over the spot that the hard drive is contained. Which, wouldn’t you know, is enough to break the damn thing. So, I try to get it fixed and/or replaced, hoping it would still be enough in shape to take the old data - including my Photoshop files from my commissions and personal work - and transfer it to a new drive.
My brother-in-law gave me a recommendation to go to Best Buy since that was apparently where he remembers getting his also then beat-up laptop repaired good as new. It turns out, however, he gave me the wrong place cause once I had my laptop in process to be repaired by them, he then panics and tells me it was Nerds on Call (which is also way cheaper than what Best Buy charged me). I went to see if I could get my computer back, and it turns out they were gonna charge me more if I tried to get it out before the repairs were done. So, I sucked it up and left it there hoping they would at the very least get it fixed in a semi-decent manner (and have my files transferred).
About two weeks go by before I get it back, with a statement saying they had to replace the drive but had done their best to transfer the old stuff to it. Also, the laptop shell was apparently not included in the repairs, because not only is one of the screws missing BUT one of the hinges is cracked and I now have to hold the bottom part with my hand to make it not pop off when I open the laptop. So great. Now back to the state of the data.
Unfortunately, the data that I was given back is in such a state that I am either too dumb to find the proper files and get everything in proper order, or it is just so very broken that I can’t repair any part of it. And I am extremely distraught over this. This is years worth of collected photos, art, and writing that I have lost. And now I need to figure out how I’m supposed to replace and/or get over it.
TL;DR - my hard drive is broken and I lost all of my files. also Best Buy is not a great place (at least where I live) to get important tech repaired. fml
