Not only are “pterodactyls” not dinosaurs they’re also not… even a real animal.

Pterodactylus was a species of Pterosaur from the Late Jurassic.

It was a small pterosaur, about the size of a tern. It had a crest on the top of its head and small, long, thin teeth it used to eat invertebrates and other small animals.

(Size of the sub-adult holotype [blue] and adult [green] specimens, by Matt Martyniuk)

Pteranodon was another species of pterosaur, from the Late Cretaceous. Due to its… “appearance” in Jurassic Park it tends to be the base for the common pop culture image of the “Pterodactyl”.

Pteranodon was toothless (it’s name literally means “toothless wing”) unlike the earlier pterosaurs. It was a large predator of the Western Interior Seaway and would have spent most of its time soaring and diving into the water after fish.

But those weren’t the only two pterosaurs. Over 150 species of pterosaur have been named so far, from the Triassic to the Cretaceous. This was a highly diverse group of animals who filled many different niches.

Some were essentially reptilian bats.

Some were giraffe-sized storklike predators.

(model of Quetzalcoatlus northropi by Blue Rhino Studio, currently housed at the Chicago Field Museum)

Some were filter feeders.

(Art of Pterodaustro guinazui by Andrey Atuchin)

Some were divers.

(Art of a female Pteranodon by Julio Lacerda)

Some were giant stalking land predators.

(Art of Hatzegopteryx thambema by Mark Witton)

Some were small, skittering land predators

(Art of Dimorphodon macronyx by Mark Witton)

Some were herbivorous. Some were omnivorous.

(Art of Tapejara wellnhoferi by Robin Boutell)

Some were scavengers.

(Art of Istiodactylus latidens by Gabriel Ugueto)

Some had unbelievable ornamentation.

(Art of Thalassodromeus sethi by Rudolf Hima)

(Art of Nyctosaurus gracilis by Julio Lacerda)

(Art of Cycnorhamphus suevicus by Chris Masnaghetti)

All of them were fuzzy.

Yet the media depiction of a “pterodactyl” tends to to be a shaved, toothed Pteranodon with the long tail of a Rhamphorhynchus.

Which is incredibly unfair to such a diverse, widespread clade. It’s like representing all mammals as some sort of hairless lion with a platypus beak and rat tail. And saying “This is my favorite reptile: the Mammali.”

(Pretend I felt like drawing the above hypothetical creature and put it here.)

Anyway, this is certainly not to mock people who say “Pterodactyl is my favorite dinosaur”, I just want to educate. Because it’s so unfair that this information is not more readily known cause pterosaurs are so cool! More people deserve to know Cool Things!

So yeah, what’s your favorite pterosaur? Mine’s probably Kunpengopterus but the azhdarchids are growing on me.

I have this dragon up for sale/offer/trade on toyhouse. I designed last Halloween, I’m thinking of keeping, but want to see if anyone’s interested first. I prefer fearl characters as well, no humans or human like. :)

Honestly wish there was an active browser pet game with dinosaurs/prehistoric creatures, just think it would be neat/cool. :D Evosaur, I believe it was cancelled/no updates. Another one, exhibited, evos prequel site, is no longer active. :(

This spino is a bit of a mock up of if there was one/my interpretation I did last year I believe. :)
