Maybe it’s better to have the terrible times first. I don’t know. Maybe then, you can have, if you live, a better life, a real life, because you had to fight so hard to get it away⸺you know?⸺from the mad dog who held it in his teeth. But then your life has all those tooth marks, too, all those tatters and all that blood.

A cyberpunk dystopia doesn't sound very great for everybody but if it were real at least somebody could open up the plates on my back and tweak my artificial spine with a soldering iron

Yes, this is a sex thing

Downsides to a cyberpunk situation: everything in the world is extracted for wealth from natural resources to our very daily lives. We lack the means to determine our own futures because our future is bought and paid for by megacorporations. Your modified body costs you rent. Everyone is unique but no one is special.

Upsides to a cyberpunk situation: Yuo can stick your dick in the neural port

Transhumanism doesn't need to be dystopian. We just gotta unite as freaks and take it from the hands of the techbros

This would be the K.A. Applegate who wrote Animorphs, so, um, yeah, "hardcore" would absolutely be a fair assessment.

In case anyone wants to know the context that is the internal dialogue of a thirteen year old kid trying to justify to himself murdering his own mother to free her from brain slug mind slavery after having assumed she was dead for most of his life.

You know, when I see fictional characters who repress all their emotions, they're usually aloof and very blunt about keeping people at a distance, sometimes to an edgy degree—but what I don't see nearly enough are the emotionally repressed characters who are just…mellow.

Think about it. In real life, the person that's bottling up all their emotions is not the one that's brooding in the corner and snaps at you for trying to befriend them. More often than not, it's that friendly person in your circle who makes easy conversation with you, laughs with you, and listens and gives advice whenever you're upset. But you never see them upset, in fact they seem to have endless patience for you and everything around them—and so you call them their friend, you trust them. And only after months of telling them all your secrets do you realize…

…they've never actually told you anything about themselves.

Adding onto this: characters who are so deeply repressed that they don't even realize they're not fine, or at the very least not supposed to be fine. Characters who do tell you about a situation they're in that should be bad, but instantly laugh it off saying they can handle it (spoiler: they can, in fact, not handle it). Characters who laugh with you and listen to all your woes and much later you learn that they were actually going through something at least equally bad at the time, but they wave it off and don't want to speak of it. Characters whose main coping mechanism seems to be "don't think about it" on endless loop.

Basically, the fictional embodiment of the "this is fine" dog.

u don't understand vance's only other option was to escape and disappear forever. the branch of arasaka in night city couldn't let their sister locations elsewhere know that they went and fucked up and lost the valuable asset that they had been workshopping for the past 13 years....like hanako had probably heard about vance in passing. she knows vaguely that he's gone; she'd finally recognize him when they'd meet in embers

but ......even if he had truly, honestly, been a 100% safe—would he have ever believed that? would he have let himself settle down or would he keep moving, all too aware of what awaits him if he gets caught?
