Guys, guys, let’s get back into Animorphs!!!

They are all free to read with Applegate’s permission on the animorphs website!

Oh yeah babey

She has also written some absolutely amazing books recently.

These are just a few of them. I read The One and Only Ivan to my students every year (and there’s a sequel coming out in May!).

Every one of her books I’ve read has been beautifully written. Yes, they’re written for children, but you won’t regret reading a single one of them. Applegate is hands-down my favorite middle grades author.

Read. Her. Books.

AO3 IS IN TROUBLE IF CALIFORNIAN AGE VERIFICATION LAW PASSES

An upcoming Age verification bill centered in California will be voted on Monday-- And as always, instead of actually protecting kids, it will lead to more online censorship and privacy risks, as it will force websites hosting to verify their users age by sending their ID, your browser history would be linked to it. if you live California, call your reps and tell them to oppose the bill AB3080 as it highly unconstitutional.

They also deem LGBT content harmful to minors, as well as mentions of weapons and tobacco, putting them on the same level as NSFW content.

Since AO3 headquarters reside in California, much like Reddit, Twitter,Discord and Youtube (and others) who knows how bad the effects would be. Instead of just effecting Californians (even then its concerning.) the effects would be US or even worldwide. VPNs wont help.

Please take actions here (a script is included to help you) https://www.defendonlineprivacy.com/ca/action.php

You can also send faxes using this https://faxzero.com/

If you don't live in California, please talk about this, tag your friends and urge others to take actions, make posts and tweets using the hashtags AB3080 and NoOnAB3080

Okay folks, I'm going to ask that you read the actual regulatory language of what's being proposed because although the original legislative digest was kind of horrifying, the latest version has been severely trimmed down (you can see the redline for the second version here, which includes strikethrough of the original’s text).

From my review of the actual proposed language (the text, not the legislative digest), the new bill will do three things.

1) It is adding websites that are at least one-third porn (which is defined as "visual imagery of an individual or individuals engaging in an act of masturbation, sexual intercourse, oral copulation, or other overtly sexual conduct that, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value") to the list of websites that already require age verification.

2) It provides greater options for age verification of porn than those provided for other websites selling things defined as illegal for minors. For the other things already on the list, websites HAVE to get a government-issued ID to sell materials. For porn, they are giving websites the options of either ID, a credit card, or requiring users create "adult" accounts. Which, as I’m sure almost everybody has experienced, just means picking a date on a spinning wheel or checking the “I agree that I am an adult” box.

3) It requires porn websites anonymize user identity and make user data unrecordable. (In other words, Google won't be able to suddenly blast you with hardcore ads because the data can’t be kept.)

There is no mention of queer content in the regulatory amendments and based on the definition of "pornographic content," websites like AO3 and educational/support/community sites for the queer community will be fine.

This is the main page on the bill, definitely worth a read for those curious.

Link where you can read the bill and see what stage it's in

(which is currently a second reading after having changes made to the wording, meaning any voting that would be happening would be whether they agree with phrasing, discussing potential effects, and how it could be misunderstood, misinterpreted, or misleading.)

LGBT is not mentioned explicitly. And for fears of potential implicit mentions in connection to pornographic material, they explicitly define a "pornographic internet website", as well as "sexually explicit" (screenshot of their definitions, along with highlights of what I thought was important info, below)

I think some key phrases here would be "commercial gain" and "knowingly publishes" connected to "owner of ... website",

Doesn't mean it won't effect anything, and there could be things I'm missing bc im kind of oblivious regarding subtext.

It covers more than just NSFW sites, and I would recommend reading the bill yourself to see what you get from it.

It also explicitly specifies that information gained for age verification cannot be stored, used, or sold. So... there's that at least

Found my 53yo very-much-not-online father in the kitchen today meticulously arranging cutlery on the countertop and i was like 'what are you doing' and he looked up at me with the world's most shit-eating grin and said "Your mother told me this is how you rick-roll the Youth" and i looked over and it was fucking. Loss.jpg.

i must stress that he's never seen the original comic. My mother simply showed him the shorthand symbol and he memorized it. As far as he is aware this is just a fucking hieroglyph that deals instant psychic damage to everyone under the age of 30
