Item/Event Guide

Athenai currency is pretty convoluted, and as such may require some explanation to understand. This is a guide to the various items and currencies usable in the species (for specific item descriptions, you can go look in the Athenai Bank for a couple more details), as well as events and NPCs.

Axial Engrams

Axial Engrams are the currency that is used in Cair Fhirinne, the capital city of the Athenai, as well as many places beyond it. Made by "distilling" knowledge, a.k.a. solidifying knowledge into crystal form, these shards of crystal can be seen in many places, such as interwoven into an Athenai's clothing or jewelry.

Axial Engrams can be earned through participating in events such as NPC events, main story events, or others like it, or by submitting art in our Discord server.

NPC SHOPS AND EVENTS

Athenai congregate in Cair Fhirinne, the City of the Clockwork Sun. Here you will find many interesting characters, including some NPCs who may or may not be willing to offer certain interesting services. (At some point you'll be able to read about all the NPCs in the lore document, so keep an eye out for that!)

Every now and then, we'll release an NPC, and the event and shop associated with them. Whenever an NPC Event begins, the NPC associated with the event will offer a quest related to them. For example, if you accept a quest from the Esoteric Vendor Hermes, you may be asked to gather rare ingredients for use in his potion shop. This is, in essence, a drawing/writing prompt. To fulfill this quest, draw your Athenai (or someone else's Athenai, or one of the many NPCS) taking part in this quest, and submit it in our Discord server to complete it.

Completing these quests net you Axial Engrams, but also grant a special kind of item known as a Memory (more on those below). You can only obtain a Memory twice per event, but the Axial Engram reward is available no matter how many times you do them.

STORY EVENTS

The Library hides many secrets, and sometimes an NPC will call on you to discover them. This is a Story Event, an event that lasts for about a month and remains for an (as yet undetermined) period of time. During this period, prompts will regularly be generated until the end of that period, and completion of these prompts will reward you with Axial Engrams. If enough people complete these events, you might even get a special reward...

Art Submissions

Haven't got the inspiration to take part in an NPC event? You can send in art depicting your Athenai, someone else's Athenai, or even an NPC in the Discord server to get Axial Engrams!

Item Types

There are a few types of items that can be found in the species shops:

Memories

Memories are a specific type of Axial Engram that is encrypted with secrets specific to the Athenai that makes it. These are very valuable, and are usually only given as gifts to those the Athenai trusts.

Memories can be obtained by participating in NPC Events (detailed later). These events only grant memories the first 2 times they're completed. Once obtained, you can destroy memories to gain Axial Engrams or exchange a certain number of them for an item of your choice. For now, these exchanges happen exclusively in the Discord server, but as I learn to figure stuff out this may change!

Braidings

Braidings (or bindings, if worm is being a dumbass) are modifications that Athenai make to their main prosthetic limbs, i.e. their arms and legs, that modify their appearance. These modifications can range from glowing cracks in an Athenai's limbs to limbs that are woven from string and wood.

Braidings can be obtained by trading Axial Engrams or Memories for items at an NPC Shop (see bank). Alternatively, some special braidings may be available as a reward for some special events... keep an eye out for those!

Augments

Augments are those modifications that happen not to be braidings. These are modifications that Athenai make to the rest of their body, e.g. their teloi, their tails, etc. These modifications can range from flowing or bottled liquid teloi to rings that float around an Athenai's body.

Like braidings, augments can be obtained by trading Axial Engrams or Memories for items at an NPC Shop (see bank). Special augments are also available as a reward for some special events, similar to braidings.

Cores

Cores contain newborn Athenai souls, still forming a body around the glass canister keeping it safe. These are the species' MYO items, of which there are two rarities: Decalibrated Cores, and Tormented Cores.

These items, along with the redesign/upgrade items, can be obtained from a special NPC known as Reader. Purchasing a Core with Memories, Axial Engrams, or money will grant a number of vouchers that allow you to claim a free Braiding or Augment from one of the other shops: Decalibrated Cores grant 1 voucher, and Tormented Cores grant 3). These vouchers don't have to be used when you buy the Core; you can use them now, or you can wait until an NPC releases with an item you want and get one of those!
