Calyptra

This is the official Toyhou.se World dedicated to the closed species Calyptra! Calyptra are vampiric, anthropomorph moth-creatures with magical and limited shapeshifting powers. For more information, feel free to check out the species guide! You may join the world regardless of whether you own a Calyptra or not, and the same is true for submitting art so long as you have the character owner's permission and adhere to the rules. So please check out the World Rules and Species Rules below before you settle in. C:

World Rules

Community Rules:

  • Other members of this world and Toyhou.se are to be treated with respect and courtesy. Insulting, harmful and hateful behavior of members can be reported to the owner of this world, and depending on severity and amount of offenses, this can lead to the user in question being banned from this world and the species for good.
  • Members of this group are not allowed to advocate hateful content (for example racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc.) in the descriptions and comments of art in or for this world's gallery. If it should come to my attention that world members partake in harassment or hatespeech towards others, this may lead to them being banned and their art removed from the gallery.
  • Toyhou.se's community guidelines apply to this world.
  • If you comment on the submissions of other members, please use common courtesy and offer criticism in a constructive fashion.
  • If you want to draw a character that is not your own, ask the owner for permission and respect their boundaries.
Submission Rules:
  • Toyhou.se's submission guidelines apply to this world.
  • Art submitted to this world may not advocate toxicity (for example: homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, etc.).
  • Characters containing sensitive or potentially squicky content should try to keep those parts of the content out of the thumbnail and have a small warning signifier in the title or header so users can avoid them.
  • Art needs to be submitted to the correct folders. Art that was submitted to the wrong folders can be rejected without comment.
  • Submissions must not contain personal data (for example: address, private telephone number, etc.) of anyone else without their consent. If you discover personal information of yours in one of the submissions within our gallery, feel free to report this to the admins.
  • Submissions should be unique. If you repost something on a new account, please pm us about it so we can exchange the old upload with the new one instead of having doppelgangers in our gallery.
  • For now, this group is dedicated exclusively to the closed species Calyptra. Please only submit art and writing containing or relating to members of the species.
  • Submissions made from bases and dolls or with the help of outside assets (like background images) need to have proper credit in their metadata, complete with a link to the original piece. Websites like Saucenao or Google Image Search can help you find the source of an image if you don't remember it. Art that is discovered to break this rule will be rejected or taken out of the gallery, and may net you a place on the blacklist if it's a repeated offense.

Species Rules

If you wish to own a member of the Calyptra species, you need to agree to these general rules for their ownership. Different artists and creators might end up defining their own additional rules for membership, but those are generally linked or written out on or around the reference sheets/adopt batches they post.

  • Read and follow the Individual Rules of the Adopt's original creator so long as they don't conflict with the rules in this or the Group Rules journal.
  • Do not create a Calyptra character without explicit permission from Broeckchen or an official artist of the group (featured in the dedicated segment).
  • Give credit for the species if possible when you post art of it. This is not necessary every single time, but at least on reference sheets. Please know that this is not about aggressively claiming some kind of intellectual property, but instead about giving the species and it's artists more exposure to keep it alive and thriving.
  • Currently there is no limit to how many Calyptra characters you may own.
  • Do not use a Calyptra character to advocate for, encourage, or commit any illegal activity, discrimination or hatespeech. The latter two are in this context defined as "prejudice plus institutional power", not merely as "hate" or "anger". It's fine if you disagree with this definition, but understand that it's the one applicable to this specific species. Of course you can make an asshole character who holds opinions different from your own, but make sure to distinguish between your and their opinions and to keep art or writing about them from turning into a mouthpiece for oppression.
  • Your exclusive ownership of a design can be revoked if you break the rules set for this. In that case, the former owner might get my permission to resell or retrade it. However
  • If you resell or retrade a revoked design, do inform people about the fact that someone else might still be using it. Do not fling mud at the other person, but others deserve to know that the design still has someone illegitimately using it.
  • Meanwhile, using a design revoked from you naturally lands you on a blacklist and neither I nor any official or guest artist of the species will sell any more designs to you.
  • Do not sell, trade or gift Calyptra to people on the blacklist.
  • If you sell or auction off a Calyptra character, state well visibly in the offer what you originally got it for! If you got the design for free or a few bucks, people do deserve to know this before they consider giving you money or doing work for you!
  • You may sell contest prizes by Broeckchen unless specified otherwise in a contest's rules.
  • You may not sell raffle prizes for at least a year after winning them. I don't want people entering raffles to earn a quick buck snatching the prizes away from those who genuinely appreciated the designs and hoped to give them a loving new home.

Breaking any of these rules will net you 1-3 warnings before landing you on a blacklist, depending on how severe the rulebreak is and how much the culprit seems capable of changing for the better. Blacklisted users have no access to Calyptra via official means and are excluded from the communities. Note that getting blacklisted is a sign you broke the Rules severely enough that you disqualified yourself from refunds for Lightbulbs or designs! You may still ask, but it's entirely Broeckchen's prerogative whether you receive a refund or not!

Species Guide

The official guide of the species would be a tad too big to include directly on here, so please refer to the DeviantArt Submission for this.

Lore

Similarly to the species guide, the lore of the Calyptra species is extensive and still growing. It can be found in this folder and will soon be updated with short versions on most topics.

Artists

For the month of Decembre 2017, the Guest Artists are Parziivale and @AiC. Official artist and species owner is Broeckchen.

Lightbulbs

For several reasons that I will go into later, the Calyptra Species runs on an own currency called Lightbulbs! Please skip to the last paragraph of this journal if you wish to know how to purchase Calyptra adoptables, MYO slots and customs with a real-world currency instead. Lightbulbs are the glowing flowerbuds of a fruit tree only known and tended to by Calyptra and very few other species. Thus, they exist within their lore and world just like in ours, albeit in a different form. Within our world, Lightbulbs are a so-called "virtual currency", which means that you cannot walk into your local grocery store and buy things with it. You can pretty much only use it for trade with others who I have given them to - or with me, :devBroeckchen:! There are three main ways to obtain Lightbulbs: One is to purchase them directly from me. You can do this either by paying with Paypal, DeviantArt points or, if that is possible for you and I trust you with it, via bank transfer. The second way is to obtain Lightbulbs via activities in one of the Calyptra-communities. We have this Toyhou.se World for that, but also a DeviantArt Group and an Amino App. You might be awarded Lightbulbs for certain activities in one of the communities, or by winning in an event. The third way is to get Lightbulbs from other people who already own some. Maybe a fellow group member wishes to gift you some Lightbulbs so you can get your own character, or you offered to do commissions in exchange for them. I will detail in a bit how this process works. As you can see, Lightbulbs can be obtained for free. But what can you do with them?

Purchasing MYO Slots, Adoptables or Customs
Whenever an adoptable is up for sale and the person in question allows it, you can offer them Lightbulbs to buy the adoptable with. They might accept the offer if they have simply gotten tired of the character and wish to make a new one, but these cases might admittedly be fairly rare. MYO Slots however can definitely always be bought for points. Getting a slot works by noting the group with the purchase you want. Put "Purchase: MYO Slot" into the subject line and tell me how many slots you wish to purchase and which traits you want for them. Keep in mind that the costs of traits need to be added to the amount of Lightbulbs you need to pay for your purchase. Tally the Lightbulbs you think you need to pay in the note, and if you already have a rough draft of your design, send it along with that. After I gave you the go-ahead, you own the MYO slot and may make your character with the traits you purchased for them! If I deny your request or correct your calculations, you do not own the slot yet, but you also didn't lose any Lightbulbs. Customs can be purchased with Lightbulbs from me and official Artists of the species, while Guest Artists are given the choice to decide for themselves whether they wish to accept Lightbulbs or not. Usually the custom will be offered at a base price plus whatever the traits you want your character to have cost. Customs might be much more expensive than MYO Slots because the artist in question draws the image for you, and Calyptra characters can get quite complex with their markings and segmented bodies.
Purchasing or Upgrading Traits
Instead of the usually often used Rarity Tiers, Calyptra traits have values ranging from 0 to 3 assigned to them. These values signify how many Lightbulbs the trait is worth. If you purchase a custom or an MYO slot, you automatically get access to all traits that are labelled with a value of 0. For any other trait, like fancier eye colorations or biolumiscence, you need to pay me the amount of Lightbulbs it is worth. If you already own a Calyptra, you may upgrade their traits by paying the difference of their current value and the value of the trait you want to have. For example: If your Calyptra character has normal markings (0 Lightbulbs) and you wish to make their markings bioluminescent (3 Lightbulbs), then you need to pay 3 Lightbulbs because 3-0 is 3. But if your character has fuzzy thighs (1 Lightbulb) and you wish to make their entire legs fuzzy (2 Lightbulbs) you only need to pay 1 Lightbulb because 2-1 is 1. All visual changes on the character reference sheet need to be done by you though, unless you request them from an artist and they agree to implement them. If you wish the change to be a part of your Calyptra's canon history, you can simply explain it away with magic - either they had a magical accident, the change was magically made for cosmetic reasons, or some dormant trait of their family's genetics resurfaced due to magical reasons.
Donating or Gifting Lightbulbs
Funds can be hard to come by, and even harder to justify to oneself when it comes to spending them on fictional money to pay for fictional characters with. Or maybe someone does have almost enough money or Lightbulbs for the design they really want, but are just a few Lightbulbs short for that trait that really ties it all together! For people who have trouble getting Lightbulbs through money, there are different events - raffles, contests, and other fun activities - that might net the participants Lightbulbs as rewards! But where do those Lightbulbs come from? Of course some will always be provided by me, the species owner. But you can chip in, too! Members of the Communities may donate Lightbulbs to the prize pool for others to win! They may even determine how many of those Lightbulbs go to which place or if they want their donation to be raffled off among the people who didn't win anything else. Generous prize donations might see their characters featured among the ones people can draw for an event prompt. If you wish to donate some of your Lightbulbs to such a noble cause, pm Broeckchen with the subject "Prize Donation" and specify the upcoming or currently running event you want to donate to and the amount of donated Lightbulbs in the message. If you have someone specific in mind, you can also gift Lightbulbs directly to people. Gifting is done by pming Broeckchen with the subject line "Gift: [username]" and telling me the amount of donated Lightbulbs in the message. You may also ask to remain anonymous while gifting or to send a little message along with the gift. We will then transfer the Lightbulbs and send a message to the person who received them about it~.
Buying Commissions or Trading
Since Lightbulbs can be transferred to other people, you can also use them as currency with those who accept them. Maybe someone offers you a few dA points for some Lightbulbs you won in an event, or you see an artist you like offering to accept them as payment for commissions. Both will be called trade in this text. When you wish to trade with someone, you need to pm Broeckchen with "Trade: [your username] - [their username]" as the subject and detail what trade you agreed on in the message itself. I will always try to check in with the other person to make sure they agree to every detail of the planned trade. Only then will I give you permission to go forward with it. You need to message us again with the same subject line once you have received what you wanted for the Lightbulbs so we can transfer them to the person you're paying. If you are on the receiving end of a Lightbulb payment for a trade and the person supposed to pay you refuses to do so, pm Broeckchen with the normal subject line for a trade and tell me the problem, along with proof that you held up your end of the deal. If I agree with you even after hearing the other side of the story, I will notify the other person and send you your Lightbulbs regardless of whether they agree or not. Repeatedly refusing to pay the Lightbulbs you owe to others might eventually land you on a blacklist, so like... maybe don't do that.

Transferring Lightbulbs

If you need to transfer Lightbulbs for any reason not listed here, just use the subject line "Transfer: [your username] to [recipient's username]" in a pm to Broeckchen with the amount.

But why even use such a system?
The answer is that despite how convoluted it looks at first glance, it makes many things easier. It's an easy way to measure the value of traits and the money a character could be worth just based on what they're made of. It makes prices easy to calculate because most prices are simply the price of one Lightbulb times however many Lightbulbs something is worth - there are no pricing staircases and no caps on how many high-value traits a character can have, since Lightbulbs are the only thing limiting their looks. Another advantage is that this system makes it much easier to create and give out prizes and rewards. If you like none of the adoptables that got put up as prizes for an event, getting the Lightbulbs instead might make you much happier since you can turn them in for an MYO, or save up towards one. With Lightbulbs you can participate in the closed species even without any real-world money and any luck in events, since you can always hope for trades, activity rewards, or gifts. It also gives me the possibility to hand out freebies that count towards creating a character, instead of handing out whole characters like candy. Someone might have a design in mind that they would normally have to win the MYO slot in the first place fore, but then they place second instead. With this system, they can just hold on to their Lightbulbs until another event makes up for the difference - no settling necessary. Most importantly, it helps keep the communities and species active and thriving, since it can be an incentive to participate.
Purchasing Characters without Lightbulbs
Maybe this system is just not for you though - that is okay. You can always offer me (Broeckchen) to just pay the monetary value of an adopt, custom or MYO slot and be done with it, no Lightbulbs involved. Yup, it's that easy. However, please always make sure to wait for my explicit permission to go forth with the transaction. I am not responsible for an amount I was overzealously given despite not having agreed to the transaction, and I cannot offer you refunds for those.
One Lightbulb is worth 1.50 USD.
One MYO Slot is worth 7 Lightbulbs or 10.50 USD. Here's the bank with everyone's amount of Lightbulbs
