There is a place deep, deep in the woods where the birch and oak trees end, and there is only pine. It seems silent and uninhabited- the familiar skittering of mice and the rustling of leaves are gone, and the only sound is the wind wailing through the trees. It looks like no cat has hunted here for years. That is- until you hear the all-too-familiar call of an owl. The screech echoes through the woods, and you realize that you aren't alone in these woods. Carved deep into the tree trunks are dens of owls, woodpeckers, and porcupines. Bright yellow eyes peer out of the dark holes, and you stumble backwards. Out of the tallest tree's cavity emerges a silver-blue tortoiseshell cat with a creamy white underbelly. He has the biggest, most piercing eyes you've ever seen, and they look as if they can see your thoughts. The tom smiles, showing a row of pearly white teeth. "Ah, you must be new here. Welcome to Grouseclan."

The old, thick pine trees here are home to the cats of Grouseclan. They inhabit the hollows initially made by other animals like owls and woodpeckers, and deepened over time by the cats.

✦ The Cats Above

Due to the lifestyle that the Grouseclan cats have retained for many years, several features are common across the cats. It's fairly easy to tell if a cat is of Grouseclan descent- the cats who live in trees usually have longer, sharper claws than most cats that grip the soft pine bark and allow them to reach farther to catch their bird prey. Their unusually large whiskers allow them to see what they can and cannot make into a new home, and their long tails allow for balance while climbing. They have shorter but more powerful limbs that can launch them from branch to branch. However, they tend to be terrible swimmers- a Grouseclan cat will often even refuse to go anywhere near water. Grouseclan cats hate getting their fur wet, and will stay inside their homes whenever it rains.
