Usually, Kittybots are shipped directly to owners for first-face scanning and calibration, but those who do not have owners can make lives for themselves well enough.

Programmers and coders — the main creators and editors of modified (“modded”) and Specialized Kittybots — have created and exploited a new phenomenon in a Kittybot’s physical capacity: Virus Mode.

▷ Similar to a mix of internet-spread computer viruses and physical human ailments, what’s spread around the underground Kittybot programmer community is something that only those seeking to militarize AI have had access to in regards to Kittybot limitations: a selection of viruses that have been adapted to control Kittybot mainframes.

▷ Viruses can range from minor glitches to complete manipulation of the Kittybot’s mental and physical state. A big tell that a Kittybot has a virus is their red pupils - these signal an infection or corruption of any severity.

▷ A Kittybot’s “firewall” is their physical form; a Kittybot can only be infected by injection in their charging cord slot on the back of their neck (which acts as a USB access point for programmers) or direct virus contact to their physical gem (via an infected gem). With a cracked gem, viruses are more likely to be destructive, spreadable, and harder to control. When a virus is purified by halo fluid, the Kittybot usually has post-virus amnesia.

▷ SOLUTION: The only ways to get rid of a virus are to either clean or purify -

  • wipe the virus from their system via a programmer (reverse the process from the source, suggested software: [REDACTED])
  • utilize halo fluid with its intended purpose (pouring directly over the infected Kittybot’s mood gem)

Passive Viruses are parasitic programs that, in comparison to more severe viruses, grant a Kittybot more mental control and can be virtually harmless with little to no side effects.

▷ While passive viruses are less severe in regard to symptoms and aggressive behavior, they still range from a 10-49% viral control level - this means that the effected Kittybot maintains at least 51% of their mental/physical stability.

▷ Passives differentiate mainly through Kittybot software symptoms, and can range from chronic glitching and memory disruption to inconveniences like regular overheating, error message popups, random shut-downs, and other auditory/visual/processing malfunctions.

Bugs are minor software or hardware systems present after manufacturing or alterations. These are separate from viruses; a Kittybot maintains full control, but can be inconvenienced or uncomfortable.

▷ Bugs can range from visual errors (forms of colorblindness, long afterimages, etc.) and audio malfunctions, to motor impairments (slack limbs, vertigo, temporary loss of sensation, etc.). Bugs are easily fixable, so long as you have a capable programmer around. Most Kittybots only run into bugs a few times in their activity span.

▷ Altering hardware tends to cause an increase in possible bugs, as replacing artificial limbs or circuitry is a delicate process. Please make sure your Kittybot is made correctly, or else they will glitch out!

  • REMEMBER! There can only be at most 3 viruses present in one Kittybot at a time; one has to be more dominant over the others!
  • Every virus a Kittybot could get is classified by Viral Control Level (VCL) percentages - this is how much control the virus has over the bot's state.
  • Severe viruses that alter a Kittybot's form are classified as either AUTO-VIRAL or ACTIVE, with active being split into DEFENSIVE, or OFFENSIVE by control level and combat capabilities.
  • If a virus' control level is above 10%, the Kittybot will have some form of dark metal armor growing on their body, even if it's in a small area.
  • While armor is grown mainly for a virus' and Kittybot's defense purposes, it can grow anywhere on the body; the face, however, is usually the last visible area.

▷ While some Passive Viruses can lead to thin armor growth in small areas, it's usually mid-range VCL viruses (40-60%) that cause concentrated armor growth on a specific part of the bot's body; armor can concentrate around one limb while also providing temporary physical enhancement or protection for the area - especially in instances of aggression.

▷ An Auto Virus - a virus intended to turn Kittybots into weapons from the get-go - is usually not let free into public spaces; any bot with such viruses are classified as Auto-Viral and are usually kept under lock and key for those making use of them. They have little-to-no self control at all and are at the will of their master/programmer. They have never been without such monitoring and subjugation, and are arguably harder to clean.
These viruses have the highest VCL percentages, ranging from 90 to 100%, but a true 100 hasn't been successfully created.

Active Viruses (50-99%) will usually cause a Kittybot to act in aggression against their companionistic nature, or become extremely compliant to whoever fed them the virus. Armor growth is caused by any virus' innate, parasitic drive to protect its host, but different types of armor are dependant on three factors: aggression, protection, and rate of degredation.


DEFENSE: To be classified as such, the individual virus' armor growth must center around protection and rate of degredation; these types of viruses emphasize physical shielding and a preservation of its host, yet the support of such all-encompassing armor growth causes the Kittybot's state to degrade rather fast - this may put them in a vulnerable shut-down state, but only for a few moments.
Defensive viruses are the most common type in the active range. Armor can cover a large majority of the body to every single limb, though the face is still covered last.

OFFENSE: To be classified as such, the individual virus' armor growth must center around aggression. These virus' rate of degredation is far slower than that of defensive types, but lacks physical shielding; while offensive viruses still lead to full-body armor growth, it is thinner and covers less. Offensive viruses are rarer and more dangerous, as the Kittybots in question are driven by an unspoken hatred in their hostility. Active offense armor is usually centralized in one or two areas of the bot (usually arms/legs for combat), and each virus may have its own armor irregularity.

Offensive armor can include armored horns, elongated claws, spikes, or other weapon-like appendage add-ons. One growth only seen in offensive types ia a segmented, armored tail sprouting above the Kittybot's paper-thin memory - these tails are used specifically for agile combat.

Passive viruses, along with bugs, are easily fixable with a trip to your local programmer's! These aren't detrimental to a Kittybot in the long run, but can get annoying and may affect their interactions and memory usage. Any virus with a VCL lower than 5% is virtually harmless and can be classified as a bug.

Each severe, auto-viral, or active virus does come with its own symptoms! With higher VCL comes less freedom for any Kittybot in question, however, as well as a high chance of aggressive behavior. Any virus classified as having a 90% or higher VCL is also classified as being Auto-Viral.
