The Night Market - 2020

THE NIGHT MARKET

As the nights grow longer and the days shorter in the fall, it is often believed - even in the far out world of Amaiera - that the veil between the physical world and the spiritual realm becomes thinner. In order to protect themselves from this superstition, long ago people began to wear costumes and masks to ward off the spirits. Individuals of all ages dress up, or at the very least wear a mask of some kind.

Another tradition is to decorate - of course, being that they wish to drive spirits away, they make sure to light up the city more than usual. This is done with many different types of lanterns and candles. Of course, the most popular choice is to take the vegetables that are in season, carve them out and put candles inside. Many families like to bake the innards of the gourds into pies and pastries.

These sweet pastries were often given out to people who show up to shops and market stalls dressed in their costume, as thanks for scaring off the spirits and essentially blessing their establishment. Hence, the Night Market - citizens gather out in the city streets like a masquerade, and some of the most extravagant costumes often parade around to show off on a nightly basis.

Whether or not this tradition actually works to ward off unwanted spectres is unknown. Over time, the holiday has become less about such notions, and more about the costumes and treats. This, however, has allowed for the act of dressing up to take on slightly different purposes...

Wearing a costume has its perks for those of a slightly more nefarious nature, of course. Merchants who set up in the marketplace began to take advantage of the fact that their identity was hidden - meaning that, for just a few nights a year, they could sell some of their more questionable merchandise to the public without much fear of getting caught or earing themselves a bad reputation. The bazaar becomes quite a bit more packed than usual, some of the sellers are thieves peddling their stolen items, and it is even said that there are black market dealers offering their merchandise.

It is often worth it to check out what is being sold there... It's very possible that there are legit valuables for a cheap price, goods that can't be found anywhere else, or even information that can't be found anywhere else but the dark depths of the city. Of course, one must be careful where they put their money - things are not always what they seem. Of course, there is always the danger of being ripped off, or maybe even being pickpocketed in the dark of the night surrounded by people in costume. It is advisable to keep belongings close, and maybe leave anything not worth losing at home.
